Why the Colts shouldn’t worry about Anthony Richardson’s preseason struggles
Tyler Goodson - Wins No. 3 RB role Goodson won the No. 3 running back role with the Colts waiving Evan Hull, the Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact Goodson could begin the season as the backup to Jonathan Taylor if Trey Sermon misses time with a hamstring injury. Goodson could also emerge as the third-down/receiving back in the backfield mix.

Tyler Goodson - Wins No. 3 RB role Goodson will begin the season as the No. 3 running back after the Colts waived Evan Hull, Nate Atkins of the Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact Goodson could begin the season as the backup to Jonathan Taylor if Trey Sermon misses time with a hamstring injury. Goodson's skill set best fits as a third-down, change-of-pace option.
AUGUST 27, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Sam Ehlinger - Wins No. 3 QB role Ehlinger won a spot on Indianapolis' 53-man roster to begin the regular season.
Impact He'll remain on the active roster as the third quarterback, but may not see any regular-season action if Anthony Richardson and Joe Flacco are healthy.

Jelani Woods - Headed for IR The Colts are in line to place Woods (toe) on season-ending IR, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Impact Woods, who missed all of last year due to repeated hamstring injuries, is now on track to be sidelined for a second straight season due to a turf toe injury that required surgery. In his absence, the Colts will move forward with a TE corps led by Kylen Granson, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory.

Trey Sermon - Could return to practice soon Colts coach Shane Steichen said Sunday that he's hopeful for Sermon (hamstring) to return to practice next week, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Impact Sermond has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during the preseason opener Aug. 11, and he missed Thursday's 27-14 win in the preseason finale against Cincinnati. Steichen's phrasing seems to indicate that the 25-year-old might return in the week immediate leading up to Indianapolis' season opener against the Texans on Sunday, Sept. 8. Sermon stretched with his teammates ahead of Sunday's practice, though he still wasn't in uniform, according to Bremer. When healthy, Sermon is considered to leading candidate to slot in as the No. 2 running back behind Jonathan Taylor. The latter's lingering injury could leave a chance for either Evan Hull or Tyler Goodson to step in behind Taylor in Week 1.

JuJu Brents - Will return to practice next week Head coach Shane Steichen said Sunday that Brents (nose) should be ready to return to practice in the upcoming week, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Impact Brents injured his nose in the Colts' second preseason game against the Cardinals on Aug. 17. The injury has kept him out of practice and prevented him from suiting up in the preseason finale against the Bengals on Thursday, but the 2023 second-round pick appears to be close to participating in individual and team drills once more. In his rookie season, Brents recorded 43 tackles (30 solo), six passes defended, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery across nine regular-season games. He is slated to serve as the starting corner for Indianapolis opposite Jaylon Jones.

Josh Downs - Status for Week 1 unclear Colts coach Shane Steichen said Sunday he is hopefull that Downs (ankle) will be available for the start of the regular season, but his timeline for a return is still unclear, Jame...
Impact Downs has been sidelined since suffering a high-ankle sprain during practice Aug. 7. While he shed his walking boot last Thursday, the 23-year-old still seems to have some way to go before Inidanapolis' season opener verus Houston on Sunday, Sept. 8. Downs is coming off a breakout rookie season with 68 catches for 771 yards across 17 regular-season games. Should he miss time, then Adonai Mitchell and Alec Pierce will be next in line to play alongside top wideout Michael Pittman.

Jelani Woods - Undergoes toe procedure Woods reportedly underwent a procedure Friday to address a turf toe injury, according to Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com and James Boyd of The Athletic.
Impact Per both reports, it's estimated that Woods will miss about four months, and if that ends up being the case, the tight end could return in time for the stretch run of the coming season. For any length of time that Woods is sidelined, Kylen Granson, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory are slated to handle the Colts' TE duties.
AUGUST 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Trey Sermon - Misses another week Sermon (hamstring) didn't play in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Bengals.
Impact James Boyd of The Athletic expects Sermon to have a spot on the initial 53-man roster despite missing the final two preseason games and the past couple weeks of practice. The running back was injured during the first quarter of the Colts' preseason opener, after reports out of training camp pegged him as a favorite for the second spot on the depth chart. It's a role that doesn't figure to entail many touches when Jonathan Taylor is healthy, and there's some chance Sermon's absence will lead the Colts to turn to Evan Hull and/or Tyler Goodson instead. The team may even put Sermon on injured reserve if he won't be ready for Week 1, in which case he'd be ruled out for the first four games of the season.

Nick Cross - Gets start at free safety Cross started at free safety opposite Julian Blackmon at strong safety in Thursday's preseason win over the Bengals. He had one tackle. Cross was used at strong safety in Tuesday's...
Impact Cross entered training camp as the leader for the free safety job and it looks like he's still set to start opposite Blackmon at either position. Rodney Thomas and Ronnie Harrison Jr. could also figure into the mix as well, but it looks like Cross will get the starting nod after Thursday's game.
AUGUST 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Josh Downs - Seen without boot on ankle Downs no longer has a boot on his injured left ankle as he'd previously been using a boot or scooter at practice, Jake Arthur of Sports Illustrated reports. Downs did not play in T...
Impact Downs suffered a left high-ankle sprain during an Aug. 7 practice and was expected to miss four-to-six weeks. It's not clear if he'll be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, but the lack of a boot on his ankle is a positive sign.
AUGUST 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Anthony Gould - Four receptions in preseason finale Gould had four receptions for 25 yards on five targets in Thursday's preseason win over the Bengals.
Impact The 2024 fifth-round draft pick was seen mostly as a candidate for special teams as a star punt and kickoff returner, but had an impressive training camp and preseason that saw him get time with the first-team offense. He may have also won the kickoff return job and could take over the punt return job if Josh Downs misses regular season games due to a high ankle sprain.
AUGUST 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Evan Hull - Another solid preseason game Hull had nine carries for 30 yards but lost three yards on one reception in Thursday's preseason win over the Bengals.
Impact Hull was the third running back to enter the game after Jonathan Taylor and Tyler Goodson, but also got time with the first-string offense. Goodson rushed 13 times for 57 yards and caught two of three targets for 10 yards, so the two backs competing for the No. 3 running back job had another similar preseason outing. Trey Sermon hurt his hamstring in the preseason opener, and if he still isn't ready to play by the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Texans, Goodson and Hull would likely split change-of-pace duties behind Taylor.
AUGUST 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Ashton Dulin - Returns from hamstring injury Dulin (hamstring) had one reception for 11 yards on four targets in Thursday's preseason win over the Bengals.
Impact While he didn't do much in the preseason game, he returned from a hamstring injury that had sidelined him the last two weeks. He looks ready for the start of the regular season where he'll be a key special teams player as a gunner and serve as the fourth or fifth receiver.

Jason Bean - Injures shoulder Bean suffered a shoulder injury in Thursday night's preseason win over the Bengals, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Impact Bean was injured while running for a one-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. He was unable to return after visiting the blue medical tent. Prior to exiting, Bean completed all four of his passes for 52 yards and rushed three times for 15 yards and the aforementioned score. Kedon Slovis was the fourth Colts quarterback in the game after Anthony Richardson, Sam Ehlinger and Bean. Joe Flacco did not play.

Tyler Goodson - Second RB in after Taylor Goodson rushed 13 times for 57 yards and caught two of three targets for 10 yards in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Bengals.
Impact Jonathan Taylor started the game, but Goodson was the second running back to mix into the game alongside the rest of the first-team offense, though Evan Hull (nine carries for 30 yards) also got some opportunities with the starters. Goodson continued to play with the backups, as the Colts wanted to get a long look at both him and Hull. Trey Sermon hurt his hamstring in the preseason opener, and if Sermon still isn't ready to play by the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Texans, Goodson and Hull would likely split change-of-pace duties behind Taylor.
AUGUST 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Adonai Mitchell - Scores TD in preseason finale Mitchell caught two of four targets for 18 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Bengals.
Impact Mitchell had a pair of nine-yard receptions on the opening drive, the second of which resulted in a touchdown over the middle from the slot. Anthony Richardson completed only one more pass across the starters' four other drives in the game, so Richardson was unable to build on his hot start. Mitchell's ability to line up outside or in the slot should earn the rookie second-round pick plenty of playing time out of the gate, especially with Josh Downs' (ankle) status uncertain for the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Texans.
AUGUST 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Michael Pittman Jr. - One catch in dress rehearsal Pittman caught one of two targets for 12 yards in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Bengals.
Impact Pittman's lone catch came on the first drive, but he couldn't get anything else going as Anthony Richardson went cold on the next few drives and Pittman dropped his only other target. The Colts are likely to be more effective on the ground than through the air given Richardson's rushing ability and the presence of star running back Jonathan Taylor, but Pittman projects to remain the top dog in a receiving corps that also includes rookie second-round pick Adonai Mitchell, Josh Downs (ankle) and Alec Pierce. Pittman will begin the regular season Sept. 8 against a Texans team that held him to two of his six lowest single-game yardage totals in 2023.
AUGUST 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Kylen Granson - Team's top TE heading into season Granson caught two of three targets for 17 yards in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Bengals.
Impact Granson was the intended receiver on Anthony Richardson's pick six on the second drive, which was the result of a miscommunication between the quarterback and tight end. Despite that miscue, it was encouraging that Granson got the lion's share of playing time in the five possessions that Richardson and the first-team offense played, finishing as one of three players to catch multiple passes from Richardson. After leading all Colts tight ends with 368 receiving yards last season, Granson sits atop the depth chart heading into the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Texans.
