Carolina comeback hopes fade when injured McCaffrey leaves
The Carolina Panthers felt they beat themselves in a 31-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

MRI on tap
McCaffrey is slated to undergo an MRI on his injured ankle Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact
McCaffrey was removed and eventually ruled out in the later stages of Sunday's 31-17 loss at Tampa Bay. An ankle injury was cited as the culprit, and now the do-it-all running back will go through the usual testing protocol to get to the bottom of his health concern. The Panthers are hopeful it's not serious, but in any case Mike Davis, Curtis Samuel and Trenton Cannon are next in line for touches out of the backfield behind McCaffrey.

Ruled out Sunday
McCaffrey (ankle) won't return to Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Myles Simmons of the Panthers' official site reports.
Impact
At the time of the ruling, less than two minutes remained in the contest with the Panthers facing a 14-point deficit, so it's not a shock McCaffrey won't return. Earlier in the fourth quarter, he was testing the ankle by walking about the sideline under his own power. In his stead, Mike Davis is the likely candidate to get work out of the team's backfield, but Curtis Samuel could get reps, too, as he operated as a running back during his college days at Ohio State.

Hurts ankle Sunday
McCaffrey is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Buccaneers due to an ankle injury, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Per the report, McCaffrey has been been walking on his own power on the sideline, testing his ankle out, but it remains to be seen if he'll re-enter the contest. Next up for the team's carries are Mike Davis and Trenton Cannon.

Strong start to season
McCaffrey rushed 23 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns in Week against the Raiders. He also added three receptions for 38 yards.
Impact
McCaffrey didn't deliver any spectacular runs, as his longest rush of the day went for 15 yards. Nevertheless, he was a big part of the offense and found the end zone twice -- one from six yards and the other three. He's always an elite option, and that won't change when the Panthers take on the Buccaneers in Week 2.
