INJURIES

Scores first NFL touchdown Gibson ran the ball 13 times for 55 yards and a touchdown and caught one of two targets for minus-3 yards in Sunday's 30-15 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact His first NFL score came late in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard run as Washington attempted to mount a comeback. Gibson continues to show flashes of his talent, and the third-round pick could find some success in Week 3's road tilt against a Browns defense that just gave up 86 scrimmage yards to Joe Mixon.

Washington defense showed in Week 1 win it could be a force

Washington's defense showed Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles that it could be a game-changing force this season

Receives 11 touches in debut Gibson gained 36 yards on nine carries and added two additional yards while snaring both his targets during Sunday's 27-17 win over the Eagles.
Impact Making his NFL debut, Gibson led the team in rushing despite receiving roughly half as many carries as Peyton Barber. The majority of his production came on a nifty 20-yard scamper, but nevertheless, it was encouraging to see him average 4.0 yards per carry against one of the tougher run defenses in the league. Barber did score twice on the day, but perhaps Gibson's more productive per-touch numbers could earn him additional usage next Sunday against the Cardinals.

Behind McKissic on depth chart Washington listed Gibson as the No. 2 running back on the unofficial depth chart the team released Tuesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Impact J.D. McKissic sits atop the depth chart heading into Week 1, but his presence there doesn't necessarily mean he'll take Washington's first snap or lead the backfield in carries and touches in Sunday's season opener versus the Eagles. Instead, Washington is expected to make use of a committee of running backs that includes McKissic, Gibson, Peyton Barber and Bryce Love. The latter two backs will likely see most of their use in pure running situations, while McKissic's skills as a pass catcher could allow him to see steady work on three downs. During his final year at Memphis in 2019, Gibson excelled both as a runner (11.2 yards per carry on 33 totes) and receiver (38 receptions for 735 yards and eight scores), so the rookie third-round pick seemingly has the best potential among Washington's four backs to emerge as a three-down option. The uncertainty regarding Gibson's workload early on will make it difficult to depend on him in Week 1 fantasy lineups.

Emergence contributes to AP release Gibson's emergence during training camp played a role in Washington's decision to release Adrian Peterson on Friday, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Impact The third-round rookie already was ticketed for a role in the Week 1 gameplan, but it was Peterson who was widely viewed as the favorite to serve as the lead runner. It's now possible GIbson handles the job, though this report notes that Peyton Barber could also get carries, and the team still has J.D. McKissic for passing downs. Gibson is the one with three-down potential, even if it doesn't materialize right away.

FANTASY PLAYS: Workhorse runners best resource in fantasy

The key is to prioritize big-time wide receivers over running backs with questionable fantasy value
AUGUST 25, 2020 • Associated Press
Getting work with starters Gibson had a couple nice runs with the first-team offense at the beginning of Monday's practice, Kyle Stackpole of the official team website reports.
Impact Washington seems to be taking a mix-and-match approach with its running backs, splitting first-team reps between Gibson, Adrian Peterson, Bryce Love, J.D. McKissic and Peyton Barber. While Peterson remains the favorite for the Week 1 start, it's Gibson who offers the highest ceiling for fantasy value down the road, combining pass-catching skill with 4.39 speed in a 228-pound frame. Peterson and Barber are early down bruisers with minimal receiving ability, while McKissic is an undersized passing-down specialist. Gibson, and maybe Love, at least have the theoretical upside to earn playing time in a variety of situations. We'll continue to monitor the division of practice reps leading up to Week 1.

Could fill lead role eventually Gibson could eventually fill the role the Washington Football Team had in mind for Derrius Guice, who was released last week, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Impact With 4.39 speed in a 228-pound frame, Gibson certainly looks the part of an NFL lead back, but he essentially played just one season at Memphis, where he took most of his snaps as a wide receiver. While coach Ron Rivera made it clear he views the rookie as a running back first and foremost, the team has Gibson sitting in on meetings with both position groups. Even with Guice out of the picture, Gibson's initial role likely will entail some combination of passing-down backfield work, gadget plays and kick returns, rather than regular playing time as a ballcarrier. There should be room for growth throughout the season, as there's no clear dominant force in a Washington backfield that otherwise consists of Adrian Peterson, J.D. McKissic, Peyton Barber and Bryce Love (knee). The rookie third-round pick is the only one of the bunch with potential to combine power, speed and receiving ability. His transition to the NFL may be tricky, but Gibson's long-term ceiling is tantalizing.
