Commanders' No. 1 offseason priority: Find their QB of the future

The Commanders hope to end their revolving door of quarterbacks by identifying their signal-caller of the future during the offseason.
JANUARY 10
Commanders' No. 1 offseason priority: Find their QB of the future
Has surgery on foot Gibson (knee) underwent surgery Thursday to address a fracture in his foot, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Gibson played through the fracture for most of December but then missed the final two games of the regular season after spraining his knee Week 16. He's expected to recover in time for offseason workouts, at which point he'll be in the fourth and final season of his rookie contract. Rookie back Brian Robinson, meanwhile, will miss Week 18 with a knee injury that isn't considered especially serious. Jonathan Williams and Jaret Patterson are Washington's healthy backs for the season finale, while Robinson and Gibson should be ready to go for OTAs.
JANUARY 6 • ROTOWIRE
Shut down for Week 18 Washington placed Gibson (knee/foot) on injured reserve Thursday, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
Impact Though Gibson's pair of lower-body injuries aren't believed to be long-term concerns, the Commanders will err on the side of caution by holding him out of Sunday's season finale against the Cowboys. By moving Gibson to IR, the Commanders were able to free up a spot on the 53-man roster for practice-squad signee Jaret Patterson, who will add depth to the backfield behind Brian Robinson (knee) and Jonathan Williams. Gibson concludes the 2022 season with 546 rushing yards (on a career-worst 3.7 yards per carry) and three touchdowns to go with 46 catches for 353 yards and two more scores over his 15 appearances.
JANUARY 5 • ROTOWIRE
Not practicing Gibson (knee/foot) didn't practice Wednesday, Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Washington reports.
Impact Gibson has been dealing with the foot injury for more than a month without missing a game, but the knee sprain he suffered Week 16 against San Francisco rendered him inactive for the Week 17 loss to Cleveland. Washington's elimination from playoff contention reduces the odds of Gibson returning for the season finale, though it's perhaps still possible if he returns to practice Thursday or Friday.

Ben Standig: RB Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) is OUT for Sunday. - The Athletic RB Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) is OUT for Sunday.
DECEMBER 30, 2022 • THEATHLETIC.COM
Ruled out Gibson (knee/foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Browns, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gibson has been dealing with a foot injury for a few weeks and then sprained his knee in last Saturday's loss to the 49ers. His absence for Week 17 could leave Brian Robinson in a three-down role, though it's also possible the Commanders give most of Gibson's usual workload to Jonathan Williams or Jaret Patterson (the latter of whom would need to be called up from the practice squad). A Week 18 matchup with Dallas will be Gibson's final chance to play in the 2022 regular season, and perhaps his final chance until next fall if things don't go well for the Commanders these next two weeks.
DECEMBER 30, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Missing third straight practice Gibson (knee/foot) is not participating in the portion of Friday's practice open to the media, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gibson appears to be missing a third consecutive practice, which would bode poorly for his chances of suiting up Sunday versus the Browns. Friday's official practice report will reveal whether Gibson has an official injury designation for the contest, but fantasy managers will already want to begin preparing for a potential absence. If Gibson is limited versus Cleveland or can't play, rookie Brian Robinson will be primed for an increased role in Washington's Week 17 backfield, while Jonathan Williams would stand to handle the No. 2 spot.
DECEMBER 30, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Sits out another practice Gibson (knee/foot) didn't take part in Thursday's practice, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Impact Gibson has opened Week 17 with back-to-back absences from practice due to knee and foot injuries, giving him just one more opportunity to get some on-field work before the Commanders potentially make a ruling on his availability ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns. If Gibson is limited or sidelined this weekend, rookie Brian Robinson likely would take on the lion's share of the backfield work for Washington, with Jonathan Williams on hand for anything that lingers.
DECEMBER 29, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Missing from another practice Gibson (knee/foot) wasn't present for Thursday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gibson thus appears set to be listed as a non-participant for the second practice in a row, clouding his status for Sunday's game against the Browns. If Gibson is sidelined Week 17, Brian Robinson would have an even clearer path than usual to handling the bulk of the carries out of the backfield, while perhaps benefiting from more work on passing downs, too. Jonathan Williams would step in as the Commanders' No. 2 running back in place of Gibson.
DECEMBER 29, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Listed with foot, knee injuries Gibson is listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's practice with foot and knee injuries, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Coach Ron Rivera revealed Tuesday that Gibson had suffered a sprain in Saturday's 37-20 loss to San Francisco. Given that he was listed with a foot injury the past few weeks, it would seem Gibson sprained his knee -- an injury that puts his status in question for Sunday's matchup with the Browns even if it isn't an especially bad sprain. Brian Robinson could get more targets, and perhaps a few more carries than usual, if Gibson isn't ready by Sunday.
DECEMBER 28, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Not practicing Wednesday Gibson (undisclosed) is not present at the start of Wednesday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday that Gibson is dealing with a sprain, but he didn't more details about the running back's injury. Gibson will have two more chances to up his practice activity ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Browns, but if he can't go or ends up limited, Brian Robinson and Jonathan Williams would stand to handle more opportunities Week 17. During last Saturday's loss to San Francisco, Williams already outgained Gibson.
DECEMBER 28, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Dealing with sprain Head coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday that Gibson is dealing with an undisclosed "sprain" and will be monitored closely during Week 17 prep, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Impact Rivera wouldn't reveal what body part Gibson injured, but the coach did say the running back's injury led to more playing time for Jonathan Williams during the team's blowout loss to the 49ers. The extent of Gibson's issue remains unclear, but Wednesday's practice report should provide further clarity on his status for Sunday's matchup against the Browns.
DECEMBER 27, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Gets only seven touches Gibson took five carries for 10 yards and caught two of three targets for 21 yards in Saturday's 37-20 loss to the 49ers.
Impact Gibson played 29 percent of Washington's offensive snaps, down from 60 percent the week before in a loss to the Giants, though he finished with the same number of touches (seven). Brian Robinson, meanwhile, took 22 carries for 58 yards (plus one incomplete target) on 44 percent of snaps. No. 3 back Jonathan Williams took 29 percent of snaps, albeit with five of his six touches coming in the fourth quarter after Washington fell behind by 16 points. Gibson gets a nice matchup with Cleveland's weak run defense in Week 17, but it'll be tough for fantasy managers to trust him after four consecutive games with 12 or fewer touches for less than 60 yards and no touchdown. He did have a productive stretch before that with 100-plus yards and/or a TD in four of five games Weeks 7-11 (a stretch where the Commanders went 4-1).
DECEMBER 26, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Good to go for Week 16 Gibson (foot) won't carry an injury designation for Saturday's game in San Francisco, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
Impact Gibson was listed as a limited participant on the Commanders' first two Week 16 practice reports, but as anticipated, his foot issue never seriously threatened his availability for Saturday's contest. He'll likely fill his usual role as Option 1B in the backfield alongside rookie Brian Robinson. Though Robinson has handled more carries between the two backs in each of the past three games, Gibson has still taken on snap shares ranging between 40 and 62 percent in those contests while averaging 10 touches.
DECEMBER 22, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Stays limited Wednesday Gibson (foot) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Impact GIbson reps have been capped for the Commanders' first two practices of Week 16, as has been the case for a few weeks at this point while he deals with a foot injury. He'll have one more chance to get back to full activity Thursday, at which point the Commanders may hand him a designation for Saturday's contest at San Francisco. Gibson doesn't appear in danger of sitting out this weekend, so assuming he's eventually cleared to play, he again will be splitting work with rookie Brian Robinson out of Washington's backfield.
DECEMBER 21, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Limited on estimated report Gibson (foot) was listed as limited on Tuesday's practice estimate, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Impact The Commanders held a walkthrough to kick off Week 16 prep, but Gibson continues to have practice limitations due to the foot issue that has lingered for the past few weeks. While he played 60 percent of the snaps Sunday night against the Giants, he mustered just 27 yards from scrimmage on seven touches. Fellow running back Brian Robinson rang in at 38 percent, but he was far more utilized en route to 13 touches for 107 total yards. Gibson doesn't seem in danger of missing Saturday's game at San Francisco, but his status still should be monitored this week to make sure he's on track to play.
DECEMBER 20, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
All clear for SNF Gibson (foot) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Giants, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
Impact Gibson and fellow running back Brian Robinson (quadriceps) were both limited in all three practices throughout the week but avoided injury designations on Washington's final injury report. Robinson should get the majority of opportunities on the ground, while Gibson's the superior playmaker in the passing game.
DECEMBER 16, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Still limited at practice Gibson (foot) was limited at practice Thursday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Impact Gibson dealt with a foot issue before the Commanders' last game Week 13 at the Giants in which he turned 11 touches into 59 yards from scrimmage. Even with the help of a Week 14 bye, he's still tending to the injury, but fellow running back Brian Robinson (quadriceps) has joined him on the team's practice report this week with a cap on his reps. Neither player seems in danger of sitting out Sunday's contest, again versus the Giants, with Friday's report potentially clearing up the situation entirely.

DECEMBER 15, 2022 • STAR-TELEGRAM.COM
Dealing with foot issue Gibson (foot) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Impact So was Brian Robinson (quad), with no indication either is in danger of missing Sunday's crucial game against the Giants. The rookie got more touches than Gibson in Washington's last two games before a Week 14 bye, but Gibson still played more than 40 percent of offensive snaps in those contests and took nine carries in both games.
DECEMBER 14, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Clear second fiddle in tie Gibson rushed nine times for 39 yards and brought in two of four targets for 20 yards in the Commanders' 20-20 tie with the Giants on Sunday. He also returned two kickoffs for 27 y...
Impact Gibson saw rookie backfield mate Brian Robinson log 11 more carries and also record two catches, seemingly further cementing the backfield pecking order. Gibson now has back-to-back nine-carry tallies heading into the Week 14 bye, and he's likely slotting right back into a complementary role in the Week 15 rematch with the Giants at FedEx Field.
DECEMBER 4, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Suiting up Sunday Gibson (foot) is listed as active Sunday at the Giants.
Impact Gibson sandwiched limited practices around an absence from Thursday's practice during Week 13 prep, the result of a foot issue. The injury may have been the impetus for Gibson getting out-touched, 20-12, by rookie Brian Robinson last Sunday against the Falcons. Because Gibson seemingly is operating at less than 100 percent, such a breakdown may be the reality for the Commanders backfield this time around, too. Having said that, Gibson nonetheless has put together a six-game streak with double-digit touches in which he's averaged 69.3 yards from scrimmage per game and scored three total touchdowns.
DECEMBER 4, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Likely to face Giants Gibson (foot), who is officially listed as questionable, is likely to play Sunday against the Giants, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact Gibson seemingly suffered the injury during Washington's Week 12 win over Atlanta, as he lost a significant amount of work to Brian Robinson in the contest. However, after turning in two limited practices this week, Gibson isn't expected to miss any further action. Even if Gibson is active, Robinson could once again take on a heavier workload, given that Gibson may be operating at less than 100 percent.
DECEMBER 4, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Listed as questionable Gibson (foot) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Giants, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gibson was initially listed on the injury report Wednesday as limited, then he missed practice Thursday before returning Friday morning. He's seemingly on track to play, with Brian Robinson and Jonathan Williams the other options to handle more work if Gibson ends up limited or inactive ahead of the Commanders' 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. Robinson got more work than Gibson in last week's win over Atlanta, but it was the other way around the week before in Houston.
DECEMBER 2, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Back at practice Friday Gibson (foot) is participating at Friday's practice, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Impact The 24-year-old was unable to participate at practice Thursday but has returned to the field for Friday's session. It's unclear if Gibson has shown enough to avoid an injury designation altogether, but it appears he'll at least have a chance of suiting up Sunday against the Giants.
