Heading to Memphis The Grizzlies are trading Santi Aldama to the Mavericks for Johnson, a protected 2030 first-round pick and two future second-round picks Wednesday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

Impact After dealing Ja Morant away earlier this week, Memphis is continuing its rebuild efforts. Johnson, who was part of last year's Anthony Davis trade to the Wizards, will have a chance at a fresh start with a young Grizzlies club but does have plenty of competition for playing time on the wing. Last regular season, the 2024 first-rounder averaged only 9.5 minutes per game over 48 appearances for Dallas and Washington.

Impact The second-year guard came over from Washington as part of the trade that sent Anthony Davis (finger) to the Wizards, but Johnson still struggled for regular action at the NBA level with Dallas. Johnson averaged 3.9 points, 1.1 assists and 1.0 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per tilt through 23 games for the Mavericks this season. All signs point toward Dallas exercising Johnson's team option for 2026-27, and perhaps he'll have a clearer path to minutes if the Mavs don't re-sign Khris Middleton.

Impact Johnson recorded double digits for the first time in his past 15 games, shouldering a little more on the offensive end as Dallas continues to roll with some interesting lineups. Although he has flashed some upside on the offensive end, Johnson's lack of supporting stats remains an issue. At this stage, there is no reason to think he will be a relevant piece next season.
