Impact McKenzie had his best stuff in this one, scattering four baserunners over four innings and tossing 50 of his 67 pitches for strikes. He did come close to surrendering a run in the second inning, but Amed Rosario gunned out Kyle Farmer at home to end the inning after he tried to score from first on a Brandon Drury double. The right-hander looked much better in this contest than when he last appeared April 7 against the Royals, giving up two runs over three innings. McKenzie will look to further lower his season numbers when he takes on the White Sox at home in his next projected start Tuesday.

Struggles in relief McKenzie allowed two runs on two hits across 3.0 innings and earned the loss Thursday against the Royals. He walked two and struck out one.

Impact As expected, McKenzie's first outing of the season came in relief of Shane Bieber. With two outs in the eighth, the 24-year-old gave up back-to-back RBI knocks to Bobby Witt and Andrew Benintendi, which eventually was the difference in the game. Despite the poor box score, McKenzie looked sharp until a leadoff walk in the eighth derailed his outing. When Cleveland finally get its starters stretched out, he's expected to return to the rotation, but for now, he'll likely continue operating as a piggyback.

Set to pitch Tuesday McKenzie (illness) is listed among the Guardians' scheduled pitchers for Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Padres, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Impact Manager Terry Francona said Monday that McKenzie was feeling under the weather, but the lanky right-hander apparently made enough progress overnight to put himself in position to pitch Tuesday. McKenzie is scheduled to follow starter Zach Plesac, with both pitchers likely to work multiple innings as they get stretched out in advance of Opening Day.

Impact Hoynes reports McKenzie is under the weather, but it's not expected to drastically affect his ramp-up efforts over the next two weeks. The right-hander had an up-and-down 2021 that saw him end at 5-9 with a 4.95 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 136:58 K:BB, though some of his best pitching came in August and September. He'll be expected to slot into the back end of the rotation to begin 2022.
