Kemp's RBI single in 9th gives A's 4-3 win over Guardians
Tony Kemp hit a game-ending single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Oakland Athletics a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians

Takes loss Monday
May (1-1) was charged with the loss in an extra-inning defeat to the Guardians on Monday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk across one inning. He also uncorked...
Impact
May worked himself into immediate trouble to open the 10th inning by giving up back-to-back singles to Ahmed Rosario and Jose Ramirez, the second plating inning-opening runner Steven Kwan. Rosario eventually crossed the plate as well courtesy of May's wild pitch, saddling Oakland with a two-run deficit that would prove insurmountable. May has quickly qualified for two decisions in the first four games of the season, and despite Monday's hiccup, his largely solid track record as a reliever should continue to afford him a solid amount of appearances in reasonably high-leverage situations.

Ramírez hits RBI single in 10th, Guardians outslug A's 12-11

Records victory in opener
May (1-0) was credited with the victory in Thursday's season-opening win over the Angels, allowing a hit and a walk while recording a strikeout.
Impact
May took the ball after back-to-back scoreless frames from Zach Jackson and Domingo Acevedo, and he worked himself into a bit of trouble by allowing an infield single and then intentionally putting on Shohei Ohtani. However, May earned his way out of the jam by striking out Anthony Rendon swinging, and he was rewarded for his efforts when the Athletics took the lead with a two-run eighth. The right-hander is likely to be deployed in similar seventh- and eighth-inning situations throughout the season, which should give him a solid chance at holds and the occasional decision.

Part of closer-by-committee
May, Jeurys Familia and Dany Jimenez could all be used in closer situations this season, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay told Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday.
Impact
"I think we'll start out with the mindset that they're all options," Kotsay said. A closer-by-committee situation on a bad team is a nightmare situation for fantasy managers, although someone could emerge as the preferred option eventually. That someone could be May, who has a $7 million contract and who has mostly been very good the last several seasons. Still, it's not a bullpen worthy of much of an investment in fantasy.

Shaky start to spring season
May has registered a 9.64 ERA in five Cactus League appearances so far in spring training.
Impact
May has allowed five runs in 4.2 innings of work, but he has struck out nine while only issuing one walk. Signed to a one-year deal by Oakland in December 2022, the right-hander has a chance for saves in 2023 -- albeit for one of the projected worst teams in baseball. His role in the Athletics' bullpen has yet to be defined, so he probably won't be appealing in fantasy drafts.

Inks deal with Oakland
May agreed to a one-year, $7 million contract with the A's on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
May missed a chunk of last season with an arm injury and had a 5.04 ERA across 25 innings, but he was still able to secure a solid deal for 2023. The 33-year-old was a dependable bullpen piece over the previous four campaigns with a 3.33 ERA and 32.3 percent strikeout rate, plus 11 saves and 46 holds.

Scoreless frame in return
May gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless eighth inning during Wednesday's win over the Nationals.
Impact
Seeing his first big-league action since May 2, May topped out at 95.4 mph with his fastball and seemed fully recovered from his triceps injury. The 32-year-old right-hander had a rough first month of the season, perhaps due to the arm issue, but May should slot back into a high-leverage role for the Mets now that he's healthy.

Reinstated from injured list
May (triceps) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The right-hander was sidelined since early May due to a stress reaction on the lower portion of his humerus but began a rehab assignment in late July. He posted a 4.50 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in four innings over four rehab appearances and will rejoin the Mets' bullpen ahead of Wednesday's series finale in Washington.

Nearing rehab assignment
May (triceps) is expected to launch a rehab assignment in the near future, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Impact
Manager Buck Showalter said Friday that he believes May is close to starting a rehab assignment. The relief pitcher has been out since early May while nursing a stress reaction in the lower portion of his humerus, but he appears close to a return. Prior to getting hurt, May had struggled to a 8.64 ERA and 1.92 WHIP over 8.1 innings in eight appearances, both of which represent the highest of his career.

Facing hitters Sunday
May (triceps) will progress to facing live hitters Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Impact
May resumed mound work in early July, and Sunday's throwing session will mark the first time he's faced live hitters since landing on the injured list May 3. It wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander begin an extended minor-league rehab assignment sometime during the second half of July.
