Notches first save of season Santillan struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his first save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Twins.
Impact Emilio Pagan was able to pitch Friday night after sustaining a minor hamstring strain earlier in the week and picked up up his sixth save, but he was held out the next afternoon while Santillan handled the ninth. Santillan has gotten better results in the early part of the season -- he has yet to allow a run in 10 innings with a 0.90 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB, compared to Pagan's 4.35 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB in 10.1 frames -- but as yet, there's been no suggestion the Reds are thinking about making a switch at closer as long as their incumbent is healthy.

Earns third hold Santillan struck out one over one scoreless inning to earn a hold in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Rangers.
Impact Santillan threw a 1-2-3 eighth inning to earn his third hold of the season. His velocity remains noticeably down from last season, but it hasn't impacted his effectiveness. He's given up one hit and four walks while striking out seven over five scoreless appearances (five IP). The right-hander has pitched in the eighth inning in all five outings.

Impact Santillan's average fastball velocity in his first two outings has been 93.8 mph, after he averaged 96.3 mph while pitching in 80 games last season. The Reds eased Santillan and Emilio Pagan into spring training in light of their heavy workloads last season.

Avoids arbitration Santillan agreed to a one-year, $1.8 million contract with the Reds on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Impact Santillan set a new career high by pitching 73.2 innings in 2025 and did so while remaining as effective as ever, finishing the regular season with a 2.44 ERA and 1.11 WHIP to go with seven saves and 33 holds. Emilio Pagan isn't likely to let go of his grip on the closer role anytime soon, so Santillan will continue to work as Cincinnati's premier setup man in 2026.

Collects seventh save Santillan earned the save in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Cubs, allowing two walks and zero hits while striking out two batters in one scoreless inning.
Impact With Emilio Pagan being dispatched in each of the last two games, Santillan was brought out for the ninth inning to preserve the Reds' shutout bid. It wasn't an easy outing as Santillan issued two walks while tossing 23 pitches (12 strikes), but he finished things off by striking out two of the last three batters he faced. He has yielded just one earned run in 16 of his last 17 outings and has a 1.35 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 26.2 innings since the All-Star break.

Records save Wednesday Santillan notched a save against San Diego on Wednesday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning.
Impact After Cincinnati finally got to Padres pitching with a pair of runs in the eighth inning to go up 2-1, Santillan was summoned in the ninth to protect the tenuous lead. The right-hander surrendered a leadoff double to Gavin Sheets but bounced back to retired the following three hitters in order, finishing off the save with a strikeout of Bryce Johnson. Santillan has registered a save in two of three appearances spanning the past four days. However, Emilio Pagan is probably still the favorite for saves out of the Reds' bullpen -- he wasn't used Wednesday, but that may have been because he appeared each of the previous two days.

Escapes with save Santillan allowed a run on two hits in one inning while earning a save over the Mts on Sunday.
Impact Santillan coughed up a one-out solo homer to Juan Soto but hung on to finish off the 3-2 victory. It was Santillan's first save since August 19, and he's converted five of his eight chances this season. He now owns an impressive 2.63 ERA with a 66:25 K:BB through 65 frames. Emilio Pagan pitched Friday and Saturday, and he was not available during Sunday's win.

Secures fourth save Santillan struck out two over a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Angels.
Impact Emilio Pagan pitched Saturday and Sunday, but he's been held out of save opportunities Monday and Tuesday. Santillan got the job done on 12 pitches Tuesday after Scott Barlow converted the save Monday. Santillan has had mixed results in August, allowing three runs over 7.2 innings with a 9:6 K:BB, though he's also picked up five holds and a blown save. He remains in the high-leverage mix, and if the Reds' bullpen becomes a committee, that would likely increase his save share. For the season, Santillan has a 2.79 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 57:22 K:BB with four saves and 27 holds across 58 innings.
