Notches first save of season Santillan struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his first save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Twins.

Impact Emilio Pagan was able to pitch Friday night after sustaining a minor hamstring strain earlier in the week and picked up up his sixth save, but he was held out the next afternoon while Santillan handled the ninth. Santillan has gotten better results in the early part of the season -- he has yet to allow a run in 10 innings with a 0.90 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB, compared to Pagan's 4.35 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB in 10.1 frames -- but as yet, there's been no suggestion the Reds are thinking about making a switch at closer as long as their incumbent is healthy.

Impact Santillan set a new career high by pitching 73.2 innings in 2025 and did so while remaining as effective as ever, finishing the regular season with a 2.44 ERA and 1.11 WHIP to go with seven saves and 33 holds. Emilio Pagan isn't likely to let go of his grip on the closer role anytime soon, so Santillan will continue to work as Cincinnati's premier setup man in 2026.

Impact After Cincinnati finally got to Padres pitching with a pair of runs in the eighth inning to go up 2-1, Santillan was summoned in the ninth to protect the tenuous lead. The right-hander surrendered a leadoff double to Gavin Sheets but bounced back to retired the following three hitters in order, finishing off the save with a strikeout of Bryce Johnson. Santillan has registered a save in two of three appearances spanning the past four days. However, Emilio Pagan is probably still the favorite for saves out of the Reds' bullpen -- he wasn't used Wednesday, but that may have been because he appeared each of the previous two days.

He remains in the high-leverage mix, and if the Reds' bullpen becomes a committee, that would likely increase his save share.
