INJURIES

Reds' bullpen takes another hit as Santillan (oblique) lands on IL PITTSBURGH -- An already thinned-by-injuries Reds bullpen will have to get by without another important reliever after Tony Santillan went o...

Nursing significant oblique strain Reds manager Terry Francona said Friday that an MRI on Santillan's left oblique showed a significant strain, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.
Impact Santillan -- who has notched each of the Reds' last three saves -- was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier Friday, and he appears to be facing a prolonged absence. Emilio Pagan (hamstring) is expected back from the IL soon and could immediately retake his closer job. Until then, Pierce Johnson and/or Tejay Antone could get a look in the ninth inning.

Shelved by oblique strain The Reds placed Santillan on the 15-day injured list Friday with an oblique strain, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.
Impact It's unclear when he was hurt, but Santillan last pitched Monday versus the Brewers. Santillan had stabilized the Reds' closer job of late, turning in a 1.13 ERA and 6:1 K:BB over his last eight innings while notching three saves. Though he will be eligible for activation July 8, Santillan could be held out until after the All-Star break, given the nature of the injury. Emilio Pagan (hamstring) is on a rehab assignment and is likely to retake the Reds' closer job before Santillan returns from the IL.

Scoreless run ends Santillan (1-4) was the losing pitcher Monday, allowing two runs (one earned) while walking one in a 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Brewers.
Impact Santillan, who entered a scoreless tie in the 10th inning, gave up runs for the first time in eight outings. Monday's results aside, he appears to have settled in as the Reds fill-in closer until Emilio Pagan (hamstring) returns, which could happen within a week. Pagan threw a second live batting-practice/simulated-game session Monday and is expected to begin a brief rehab assignment Thursday.

Locks down two-inning save Santillan earned the save in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Yankees, striking out one over two perfect innings.
Impact Santillan was impressive Sunday, turning in his first multi-inning effort of the season to lock down his fifth save. After a rough stretch earlier this year, Santillan's now turned in seven straight scoreless appearances, allowing just four hits while striking out six across seven innings in that span. Overall, his ERA sits at 5.10 with a 1.40 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB across 30 innings.

Nails fourth save Tuesday Santillan struck out two while allowing one hit to get his fourth save of the season Tuesday night against the Mets.
Impact Santillan has converted the Reds' last two saves and now has six consecutive scoreless outings. He credits seeing a clip from him from two years ago that inspired him to clean up his delivery, Charlie Goldsmith reports.

Breezes to third save Santillan notched a save against the Diamondbacks on Saturday with a perfect inning of work.
Impact Santillan faced a stiff test when he entered in the ninth inning, as he was summoned to protect a one-run lead against the heart of Arizona's lineup. The right-hander passed with flying colors, retiring the side in order on three groundouts while throwing 10 of 14 pitches for strikes. It was Santillan's first save since May 19, and he's the only pitcher on the team to have multiple saves (three) this season aside from the injured Emilio Pagan (hamstring). Pagan figures to retake the closer role when he's ready to return, but until then Santillan is probably the most likely Reds pitcher to get any save chances that come up.

Blows save Saturday Santillan blew the save in the Reds' 7-6 extra-inning win over the Cardinals in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader. He allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout...
Impact Santillan got the ball with a two-run lead in the ninth inning and surrendered a leadoff homer before yielding the tying run on a two-out single. It continued a disastrous month for the 29-year-old, who owns a 14.21 ERA in May while allowing runs in six of eight appearances. For the year, he owns a 5.85 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB across 20 innings with two saves and 10 holds.

Converts save Tuesday night Santillan pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two Phillies in the process to get his second save of the season Tuesday night.
Impact That makes two scoreless outings in a row for Santillan, who previously went through a brutal stretch where he allowed at least one homer in four consecutive games. The Reds are going with the lukewarm hand right now, grasping at straws to find anyone to stabilize the back end of their bullpen, and might have found a sliver of hope in Santillan.

Chase Burns' Nine Strikeouts Power Reds to 4-1 Win Over Phillies
Struggles continue Wednesday Santillan (1-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Reds fell 8-7 to the Nationals, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit in the 10th inning.
Impact After Graham Ashcraft has worked a scoreless ninth to get the game to extras, Santillan got the call in the top of the 10th but served up a game-winning two-run homer to Daylen Lile. Santillan has fallen apart in May with the Reds' closer role there for the taking while Emilio Pagan (hamstring) is on the shelf -- he's served up long balls in four straight appearances and been tagged for runs in all five of his outings this month, seeing his ERA inflate from 1.98 at the end of April to a ghastly 5.82.

Blows save in eighth inning Santillan allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning, picking up a blown save in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Cubs.
Impact The plan was for Santillan to hold a lead, as he's done nine times in 2026, but the right-hander was taken deep by Michael Busch, which tied the game at 2-2. To make matters worse, closer Emilio Pagan opened the ninth in a non-save situation and was removed after one pitch with a hamstring injury that's expected to land him on the injured list. That means Santillan could be part of a crew of relievers to replace the injured closer. Fourteen of Santillan's 16 appearances have come in the eighth inning of games, so he's a trusted late-game arm for manager Terry Francona. He sports a 2.87 ERA over 15.2 innings this season and has 12 career saves, more than any of the other relievers in line to get save opportunities.
