Blows save in eighth inning Santillan allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning, picking up a blown save in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Cubs.

Impact The plan was for Santillan to hold a lead, as he's done nine times in 2026, but the right-hander was taken deep by Michael Busch, which tied the game at 2-2. To make matters worse, closer Emilio Pagan opened the ninth in a non-save situation and was removed after one pitch with a hamstring injury that's expected to land him on the injured list. That means Santillan could be part of a crew of relievers to replace the injured closer. Fourteen of Santillan's 16 appearances have come in the eighth inning of games, so he's a trusted late-game arm for manager Terry Francona. He sports a 2.87 ERA over 15.2 innings this season and has 12 career saves, more than any of the other relievers in line to get save opportunities.

Notches first save of season Santillan struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his first save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Twins.

Impact Emilio Pagan was able to pitch Friday night after sustaining a minor hamstring strain earlier in the week and picked up up his sixth save, but he was held out the next afternoon while Santillan handled the ninth. Santillan has gotten better results in the early part of the season -- he has yet to allow a run in 10 innings with a 0.90 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB, compared to Pagan's 4.35 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB in 10.1 frames -- but as yet, there's been no suggestion the Reds are thinking about making a switch at closer as long as their incumbent is healthy.

The right-hander surrendered a leadoff double to Gavin Sheets but bounced back to retired the following three hitters in order, finishing off the save with a strikeout of Bryce Johnson. Santillan has registered a save in two of three appearances spanning the past four days.
