Back in Tampa Bay organization Armstrong signed a minor-league contract with Tampa Bay on Wednesday and was assigned to Triple-A Durham, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact Armstrong was on the open market for just under a week after he elected free agency May 4 upon clearing waivers when the Marlins designated him for assignment. The 31-year-old right-hander will be continuing his career in a familiar organization, as he spent the second half of the 2021 season in Tampa Bay after coming over in a mid-season trade with the Orioles. He had gotten off to a rough start over his seven relief appearances with Miami this season, giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits and three walks over 6.2 innings.

Moved off 40-man roster The Marlins designated Armstrong for assignment Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Zach Pop was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville while Armstrong was removed from the 40-man roster entirely as the Marlins reduced their active roster from 28 to 26 men ahead of Monday's deadline. After winning a spot in the Marlins' Opening Day bullpen, Armstrong made seven appearances and was touched up for 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and three walks across 6.2 innings.
MAY 2, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Earns spot in Opening Day bullpen Armstrong's contract was selected by the Marlins on Thursday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Armstrong joined the Marlins as a non-roster invitee in mid-March and posted a 2.08 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 4.1 innings across five Grapefruit League starts. He'll presumably pitch in low-leverage situations this season.

Clears waivers, sent to Triple-A Armstrong accepted an assignment to Triple-A Durham after clearing waivers Tuesday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact Armstrong was DFA'd by the Rays on Sunday when Nick Anderson was activated from the 60-day injured list. The right-hander holds a 6.75 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 44:15 K:BB across 36 innings with Tampa Bay and Baltimore this season, so it's not overly surprising to see him go unclaimed on waivers.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
DFA'd Sunday The Rays designated Armstrong for assignment Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact The righty gets demoted after allowing four earned runs total in his last two appearances. Armstrong's 4.50 ERA in 16 innings since joining the Rays is respectable, and the Rays' frequent bullpen shuffling suggests he could find himself back with the club in the near future. That is, unless he gets claimed off waivers. Nick Anderson (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list to fill Armstrong's 40-man roster spot.
SEPTEMBER 12, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Continues impressing Monday Armstrong fired two scoreless frames in an extra-inning win over the Red Sox on Monday, allowing one hit while recording two strikeouts.
Impact The veteran right-hander has been a valuable addition to the Rays' bullpen since arriving in Tampa at the trade deadline, posting a 1-0 record, one hold, a 2.57 ERA and 0.71 WHIP across the 14 innings covering his nine Rays appearances. Armstrong has four straight scoreless outings as well and has already worked more than one inning in six of his trips to the mound with his new club.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Gets first win Armstrong (1-0) was credited with the victory in a win over the White Sox on Sunday, firing two scoreless innings during which he issued a walk and recorded four strikeouts.
Impact Following a rocky early-season tenure with the Rays, Armstrong has looked like a different pitcher since returning to the big-league club Tuesday. The right-hander has allowed just a single hit -- a solo home run -- across five innings over three appearances while generating an impressive 8:1 K:BB.
AUGUST 23, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Contract selected by Rays Armstrong's contract was selected by the Rays on Tuesday.
Impact Armstrong was acquired for cash considerations from the Orioles at the deadline. He's been mediocre at best for most of his seven-year big-league career, posting a 4.65 ERA over 151 innings of work. Mike Brosseau was optioned to clear a space on the active roster, while Kevin Padlo was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man.

Traded to Tampa Armstrong was sent from the Orioles to the Rays in exchange for cash considerations Friday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Impact The Rays are famous for their ability to get the most out of otherwise unheralded pieces, so it's possible they see something in Armstrong that the rest of the world has missed. There's not much to like in his numbers, however, as the 30-year-old owns a career 4.65 ERA in 151 innings at the big-league level and an 8.55 ERA in 20 frames this season. He isn't on the 40-man roster and will report to Triple-A Durham for now.

Clears waivers, sent to Triple-A Armstong was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk after clearing waivers Friday.
Impact Armstrong was designated for assignment June 4 after posting an ugly 8.55 ERA and 1.90 WHIP across 20 big-league relief innings. Unsurprisingly, he went unclaimed on the waiver wire, so he'll now look to go work on his craft at Triple-A.

DFA'd by Baltimore Armstrong was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Friday.
Impact The 30-year-old has been awful through the first two months of the season with an 8.55 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB over 20 innings, which was enough to cost him his spot on the 40-man roster. Armstrong allowed only three runs over 15 frames for Baltimore in 2020 but was unable to replicate that success this season.
JUNE 4, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sloppy in first hold Armstrong allowed two runs on two hits and struck out three in 1.1 innings to earn a hold in Wednesday's 6-3 win over Minnesota.
Impact Armstrong got through the seventh inning with little trouble, but he struggled early in the eighth. A Ryan Jeffers triple put a run on Armstrong's line, and Paul Fry allowed an inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly. With an 8.55 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB in 20 innings, Armstrong continues to see mainly low-leverage work. His hold Wednesday was his first of the year, and he's also been charged with a blown save.

Clean inning Wednesday Armstrong pitched a perfect seventh inning in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Minnesota.
Impact The 30-year-old has struggled to put together clean outings this season, but he's posted two in a row after Wednesday. Armstrong has a 7.64 ERA, 1.87 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB across 17.2 innings this year. He's given up seven runs in 9.2 innings during May, and his inability to pitch consistently has led to a low-leverage role after he opened the season in the closer conversation.
MAY 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Works out of jam Armstrong allowed two hits and struck out two in two-thirds of an inning in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Mets.
Impact Armstrong relieved starter Matt Harvey with one out in the fifth inning. Armstrong allowed two inherited runners to score, but avoided any damage on his own line. The 30-year-old right-hander has struggled to a 10.13 ERA, 2.25 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB across 10.2 innings this year. Until he can string together better outings, Armstrong will likely remain in low-leverage situations.

Pitches 1.2 scoreless innings Armstrong pitched 1.2 scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout in Wednesday's 7-0 loss to the Yankees.
Impact Armstrong was the first reliever up after an ineffective 4.1 innings from starter Dean Kremer. The 30-year-old Armstrong was better in his outing. He's now strung together four scoreless innings in his last three appearances. For the year, the right-hander has a 9.00 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 7:6 K:BB in eight innings. He'll likely continue to work in a low-leverage role after a rough start to 2021.
APRIL 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Ugly outing Tuesday Armstrong allowed two runs on a hit and two walks while failing to record an out in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Marlins.
Impact Armstrong allowed a single and two walks to load the bases in the sixth inning before Adam Plutko entered the game. Plutko allowed two runners to score, which were charged to Armstrong. The 30-year-old Armstrong had seen high-leverage work previously, but his early entrance Tuesday suggests his poor performance has removed him from the closer committee. Armstrong has allowed nine runs (eight earned), nine hits and five walks across four innings this season.

Falters versus Yankees Armstrong gave up a run on two hits over two-thirds of an inning in Wednesday's 4-3 extra-innings win over the Yankees. He was charged with a blown save.
Impact Armstrong entered the game to start the bottom of the eighth inning. He retired Clint Frazier and Jay Bruce on groundouts, then allowed Gary Sanchez to reach on a single. Mike Tauchman entered as a pinch runner, and Gio Urshela tagged a double to plate the tying run, handing Armstrong a blown save. The right-handed reliever has struggled in his first two appearances, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk over one inning. He's still seeing high-leverage assignments, but that could change if his poor performance continues.
