Ryan Weiss - MLB News, Rumors, & Updates

Astros decline option The Astros declined Weiss's $5 million club option for 2027 on Thursday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Weiss appeared in just nine games for the Astros this year, during which he gave up 22 earned runs in 26 innings while posting a 30:20 K:BB. His poor performance made declining his option a fairly easy decision, so the team will pay him a $500,000 buyout and send him to free agency. The 29-year-old will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal to land his next opportunity.

Clears waivers The Astros outrighted Weiss to Triple-A Sugar Land after he cleared waivers Wednesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Impact After being designated for assignment by Houston on June 12, Weiss will remain with the Triple-A team after clearing waivers five days later. The 29-year-old has not pitched for the big-league club since May 4 and has struggled at the minor-league level through 20.1 innings.

Designated for assignment The Astros designated Weiss for assignment Friday.

Impact The Astros gave Weiss a major-league contract over the offseason after he spent time overseas, but he was sent down to Triple-A Sugar Land in early May after posting a 7.62 ERA, 2.12 WHIP and 30:20 K:BB over 26 innings. Given his $2.6 million salary, he will likely clear waivers and remain at Sugar Land.

Demoted to Triple-A The Astros optioned Weiss to Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Impact Weiss was lit up for seven runs (six earned) over 4.1 innings during Monday's loss to the Dodgers, inflating his ERA to 7.62 to go with a 2.12 WHIP through 26 innings on the year. He'll now head back to the minors to right the ship, and Jason Alexander will come up from Triple-A to round out Houston's bullpen.

Surrenders sevens runs in loss Weiss (0-3) took the loss in Monday's 8-3 loss to the Dodgers. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and four walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings.

Impact Entering after opener Steven Okert recorded two outs, Weiss struggled in bulk relief as the Dodgers lineup did significant damage. The 29-year-old has yet to find his footing in 2026, allowing runs in seven of his nine appearances this season. With a 7.62 ERA and 2.12 WHIP across 26 innings, Weiss will likely continue to operate in a long-relief role and will need to turn things around quickly to keep his spot on the roster secure.

Back from paternity list The Astros reinstated Weiss (personal) from the paternity list Sunday.

Impact After he was away from the team for the last three days while welcoming a new addition to his family, Weiss has rejoined the Astros ahead of their series finale in Boston. The Astros haven't clarified what Weiss's role will look like moving forward, but he could be available out of the bullpen to cover multiple innings behind Cody Bolton, who will open Sunday's contest but likely isn't stretched out enough to handle a typical starter's workload. If Weiss isn't used Sunday, he'll be a candidate to start or work in bulk relief during Monday's series opener versus the Dodgers.

Goes on paternity leave The Astros placed Weiss on the paternity list Thursday.

Impact Weiss will be away for 1-to-3 days while welcoming a new addition to the family. Cody Bolton (back) has returned from the injured list to grab Weiss' roster spot.

Appears headed back to bullpen Weiss appears headed back to the Astros' bullpen after Kai-Wei Teng was named the team's starter for Tuesday's game in Baltimore, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact Weiss was ineffective in two starts after entering the Astros' rotation, allowing a total of four runs on eight hits and eight walks over seven innings. Teng is not stretched out, so there's a good chance Weiss will be needed in long relief Tuesday. Weiss has collected a 6.50 ERA, 2.17 WHIP and 22:14 K:BB over 18 innings covering two starts and five relief outings this season.

Inefficient in no-decision Weiss didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Guardians, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out four.

Impact The 29-year-old right-hander needed 86 pitches (48 strikes) to record just 10 outs, as Weiss continues to struggle in his return to MLB. Weiss has yet to complete four innings in any of his seven appearances (two starts), stumbling to a 6.50 ERA, 2.17 WHIP and 22:14 K:BB over 18 innings, and with Houston having a couple off days coming Thursday and Monday, Weiss could have his next turn in the rotation skipped. Whether he gets another start or returns to a long-relief role will depend on when the likes of Tatsuya Imai (arm) or Cody Bolton (back) are cleared to come off the IL.

Receiving another start Weiss is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Guardians in Cleveland, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact The Astros appear set to condense their rotation from six to five men this week, and Weiss, Spencer Arrighetti and Peter Lambert will all maintain starting roles for the time being after Colton Gordon was shifted to the bullpen Saturday. After making his first five appearances of the season in relief, Weiss was unable to make it out of the fourth in his first MLB start last Thursday against the Rockies, covering 3.2 innings and striking out three while allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks. The 29-year-old righty has walked 13.9 percent of the batters he's faced on the season and will likely need to show improvement in that area to guarantee himself a longer-term stay in the rotation, even as the Astros contend with numerous injuries to starting pitchers.

APRIL 20 • ROTOWIRE

Inefficient in first MLB start Weiss didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Rockies, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks while fanning three across 3.2 innings.

Impact Weiss made his first start of his MLB career Thursday, but just as it had been the case in his previous two relief appearances, he got hit around quite a lot. Weiss has tossed between 2.1 and 3.2 innings in his four appearances since the beginning of April, but the results are far from positive with a 7.71 ERA, 2.23 WHIP and a 13:8 K:BB in 11.2 innings, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) over that stretch. Weiss is a pitcher you shouldn't even think about rostering right now.

Starting Thursday Weiss will start Thursday's game against the Rockies, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Impact Weiss has been hit around quite a bit during his last two outings, conceding nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits and four walks while striking out eight batters over five innings. However, the Astros are running low on options with seven starting pitchers currently on the injured list, so the 29-year-old righty will be called upon to make his first MLB start. He'll at least benefit from a favorable matchup, as the Rockies rank in the bottom third of MLB with a .681 OPS.

Crumbles in long relief Weiss (0-1) took the loss against Colorado on Monday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 2.2 innings.

Impact Cody Bolton (back) got the spot start Monday but was pulled after allowing three straight hitters to reach base in the bottom of the fifth inning. Weiss entered and allowed all three inherited runners to score -- along with five more before the frame was over. The right-hander yielded one more run on a Troy Johnston solo homer in the sixth before ending his outing by striking out the side in the seventh. Weiss entered the game having allowed just one run across six innings on the season, but his ERA now sits at 7.27 following Monday's disastrous appearance.

Working out of bullpen Weiss delivered two hitless innings in relief in Monday's win over the Red Sox, striking out three while walking one.

Impact Weiss failed to crack Houston's rotation out of spring training, though he did make the team as a bullpen option. The right-hander looked sharp Monday, as he set down six straight Red Sox after issuing a leadoff walk in the eighth. It was an encouraging performance for Weiss, after he gave up a home run to Zach Neto in his major league debut Friday.

MARCH 31 • ROTOWIRE

Competing for final rotation spot Weiss delivered 2.1 scoreless innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League matchup with the Mets, allowing a hit and a pair of walks.

Impact It was a solid spring debut overall for Weiss, as he was able to work out of trouble to keep the Mets off the board. The 29-year-old right-hander is competing with Spencer Arrighetti, Lance McCullers and AJ Blubaugh for one of the final two spots in the Astros' six-man rotation. Weiss, who featured a mid-90's fastball paired with three different offspeed pitches, signed a one-year deal with Houston after posting an impressive 2.87 ERA with 207 strikeouts across 178.2 innings in the KBO last year. Weiss figures to start the year as a swingman out of the bullpen, should he fail to crack the Opening Day rotation.
