Officially placed on 10-day IL
Atlanta placed Acuna (knee) on the 10-day injured list Monday.
Impact
The superstar outfielder is making good progress in his recovery from ACL surgery, but he'll still be forced to miss the early portion of the 2022 campaign. Acuna is currently projected to return in late April and is expected to be eased back into action as the team's designated hitter until he's 100 percent healthy. Before suffering his knee injury last season, the 24-year-old produced a slash line of .283/.394/.596 with 24 homers, 72 runs, 52 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 82 games.

Could play outfield by early May
Atlanta general manager Alex Anthopolous said Wednesday that Acuna (knee) will likely be ready to make his season debut in late April as a designated hitter before drawing starts i...
Impact
Acuna will remain sidelined for the duration of Atlanta's Grapefruit League slate and is expected to stick around at extended spring training to continue rehabbing when the regular season begins, but the 24-year-old is seemingly right where the organization expects him to be in his recovery from ACL surgery. Though Acuna has said that he feels ready to play in games, the front office understandably prefers to take a more cautious approach with the team's most important player, who underwent the right knee procedure last July. Since incorporating more change-of-direction sprinting into his training regimen likely represents the final hurdle Acuna will need to clear before making his 2022 debut, Atlanta will ease him back into action as a DH, but he should be ready to reclaim his usual starting role in the outfield soon thereafter. Anthopolous previously indicated that late May was the initial target timeline for Acuna's return to the outfield, but after getting feedback from the training and medical staffs, the GM said Acuna will be cleared to resume defensive work sooner than expected.

April return possible
Acuna (knee) could return to game action as the designated hitter by April 21, Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Bowden cited Atlanta's general manager Alex Anthopoulos when making the report, in which he also stated that Acuna could play in the outfield by May 21. The latter portion of the timeline falls in line with expectations, which have consistently suggested that Acuna would return by late May. However, the implementation of the designated hitter in the National League could allow him to return prior to being 100 percent healthy. Until Acuna can handle defensive responsibilities on a regular basis, Atlanta will likely play Eddie Rosario, Adam Duvall and Guillermo Heredia across the outfield.

Won't play outfield until late May
Atlanta general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Monday that Acuna (knee) isn't expected to be ready to play the outfield until late May, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Reports from around the time Acuna tore his ACL last July suggested that he had at least a shot to be ready by Opening Day or soon thereafter, but more recent reports indicate that he's hoping to return sometime in May. While the introduction of the universal designated hitter means he can return before late May, that timeline gives a sense of when the team believes he'll be back at 100 percent. For what it's worth, Acuna said Monday that he thinks he's regained about 95 percent of his pre-injury strength and speed, according to Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. However, even though Acuna has said that he would play Opening Day if it were up to him, the decision ultimately isn't in his hands.

Hoping for May return
Acuna (knee) is hoping he'll be cleared to return to game action in May, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Acuna underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL in July of 2021, and his trainers said Sunday that the outfielder has been rehabbing and working out extensively this winter. The 24-year-old resumed on-field batting practice in mid-January, and he took swings in the cage this weekend as spring training gets underway. It wouldn't be surprising to see Atlanta exercise caution with Acuna's rehab as the season approaches to prevent an aggravation, but he's a candidate to be utilized as a designated hitter early in the year if he isn't cleared to play the field. While Acuna will likely be sidelined for the first month of the regular season, he made encouraging progress in his recovery during the offseason.

Taking BP again
Acuna (knee) took on-field batting practice Wednesday for the first time since undergoing surgery in July to repair a torn ACL, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The activity marks the first meaningful milestone in the recovery process for Acuna, who will most likely be limited when hitters report to spring training in late February, should there be a resolution to the ongoing lockout. Whether Acuna is ready to go for Opening Day will likely hinge on whether he's able to run and change direction at full speed in the latter weeks of spring training. Regardless, Acuna at least seems to be progressing from the right knee injury on a normal schedule, though his uncertain timetable for making his 2022 debut will make him a risky early-round selection. Even if Acuna is deemed ready for the start of the season, he could scale back his involvement in the running game coming off surgery, after he stole 17 bases in 23 attempts through 82 games last season before suffering the knee injury.
