Ohtani's 2-out, 2-run HR in 9th sends Angels over Bosox 6-5

Shohei Ohtani hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Angels rallied past the Boston Red Sox 6-5, ending a four-game losing streak

Named Monday's starter Sandoval will start for the Angels against Cleveland on Monday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Impact The southpaw will take the ball as a starter for the first time in 2021 with Alex Cobb still battling a blister issue. Andrew Heaney and Shohei Ohtani will follow Sandoval on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Sandoval's longest outing in the majors this year is 3.1 innings, so it's a long shot to think he could factor into the decision Monday.

Impact Sandoval picked up the unusual three-inning save in the blowout win over the Dodgers. It's his first save of the season as he doesn't pitch in normal save situations. His only run allowed came on a ninth-inning home run by Mookie Betts. The 24-year-old has eaten multiple innings in two appearances since getting called up on May 3.

Promoted to big leagues Sandoval was recalled Monday.
Impact Sandoval will take the roster spot of Mike Mayers, who was placed on the injured list Monday for an unspecified reason. Sandoval has yet to see any big-league action this season after failing to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Fails to crack Opening Day roster Sandoval was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake by the Angels on Wednesday.
Impact The 24-year-old was competing for a bullpen spot but was unable to show enough during spring training to earn the role. Sandoval had a 5.65 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 33:12 K:BB over 36.2 innings last season for the Angels.
APRIL 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
In running for bullpen role Sandoval is among a group of pitchers vying for a spot on the Opening Day roster in a relief role, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Impact The Angels are dealing with a number of injury concerns in the bullpen, potentially opening the door for Sandoval -- or another pitcher currently on the roster bubble -- to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster. Sandoval has been used as a starter in 15 of his 19 big-league appearances, but with the team's starting rotation essentially set, his best path to major-league innings early in the campaign is likely out of the bullpen. Sandoval has struggled with his control this spring, yielding eight walks in 10 innings, but he has also struck out 13 and given up only five hits.
MARCH 20, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Role unclear Sandoval is being stretched out as a starter during spring training, but he is also being considered for a big-league bullpen role, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Impact Sandoval has looked superb in Cactus League play thus far, throwing six scoreless innings and racking up nine strikeouts. However, there may not be room in the rotation for the left-hander, even with manager Joe Maddon committed to a six-man starting staff. Should Sandoval break camp with the club, he could function as a multiple-inning relief option with the ability to step into the rotation if the need arises. He could also start off the campaign logging innings in the minors, though Sandoval seems to be reducing the likelihood of that scenario with his strong start this spring.

Suffers left calf strain Sandoval suffered a left calf strain during Sunday's start against the Dodgers.
Impact Sandoval only lasted 2.2 innings during his final start of the regular season before being removed with his injury. Barring any setbacks, the injury is unlikely to impact the southpaw's availability for spring training.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Leaves with apparent injury Sandoval exited Sunday's start against the Dodgers with an apparent right leg injury, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Impact The left-hander appeared to hurt his right leg during the third inning and was removed while in line for the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit with three strikeouts and three walks over 2.2 innings. Barring a serious injury, Sandoval should have plenty of time to recover before spring training.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sunday's probable starter Sandoval is listed as the Angels' probable starter Sunday against the Dodgers.
Impact The left-hander has been working in long relief since returning from the alternate training site in mid-September, but it appears he'll take the mound for the final game of the season. Sandoval has a 3.18 ERA since rejoining the team and topped out at 62 pitches during that stretch, and he's likely to have a similar workload Sunday.

Whiffs seven in relief Sandoval tossed 4.1 innings against Texas on Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Impact Starter Julio Teheran was lifted before recording an out in the second inning, leaving the Angels bullpen to navigate through the remainder of the contest. Sandoval assumed the largest load, throwing 62 pitches and striking out a season-high seven batters. He did yield a long ball -- as he has in each of his seven appearances this season -- but the solo shot accounted for the only run the Rangers could muster against him. Sandoval is settling into a long-relief role for the Halos after struggling as a starter earlier in the campaign.

Hit hard in return Sandoval allowed three runs on four hits in relief against Arizona on Wednesday. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Impact Sandoval's first appearance since Aug. 24 began well as the southpaw retired his first eight batters and kept the Diamondbacks off the scoreboard for three innings. However, Arizona got to Sandoval for a pair of homers in the seventh frame to account for all three runs scored against him. The 23-year-old began the season in the starting rotation but figures to fill a long-relief role moving forward.

Optioned to alternate camp Sandoval was optioned to the Angels' alternate training site Friday.
Impact Sandoval's results have declined over his past three starts, and he'll work to right the ship at the team's alternate camp. Given the Angels' lack of major-league rotation depth this season, the southpaw could return to the active roster prior to the end of the 2020 campaign. Left-hander Jose Quijada was recalled from alternate camp in a corresponding move, but it's unclear who could take Sandoval's place in the starting rotation.

Struggles versus Astros Sandoval (0-4) gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks over 2.2 innings in a loss to the Astros on Monday. He struck out one.
Impact Sandoval allowed a pair of runs in the second inning, and then got into a jam in the third inning that allowed the Astros to score three more times. His 2.2 innings pitched was his shortest start of the year. He now has a 6.75 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 15 strikeouts across 22.2 innings this season. Sandoval lines up to face the Mariners on Saturday in his next start.
