Placed on injured list
The Angels placed Sandoval on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right oblique strain.
Impact
With a week left in the regular season, Sandoval's trip to the IL will cause him to miss the rest of the year. He finishes 2023 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 144.2 innings across 28 starts, and he'll be replaced on the roster by Kolton Ingram, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Sandoval was on track to start the final game of the season Sunday, and the Angels have yet to announce a replacement.

Dealing with oblique injury
Sandoval left Monday's start against Texas with right oblique tightness, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Impact
With the Angels already eliminated from postseason contention, it would be surprising to see Sandoval pitch again this year, especially considering the location of his injury. The team should have an official update on his availability down the stretch after evaluating him further over the next day or so.

Impact
Sandoval suffered the injury in the top of the fourth inning after walking the first two batters he faced, and after receiving a visit from his manager and the trainer, he walked off the mound for the night. He'll be considered day-to-day until the nature of the injury comes into focus.

Punches out seven in no-decision
Sandoval did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings in a 6-2 loss against the Rays. He struck out seven.
Impact
The 26-year-old gave up a leadoff double to Yandy Diaz and a two-run homer to Randy Arozarena before registering an out in the game and despite allowing at least one baserunner in every inning, Sandoval managed to hold Tampa Bay scoreless for the remainder of his gritty outing. The southpaw didn't issue any free passes in his previous start, but went right back to his wild ways Tuesday, walking at least three for the 15th time in 27 tries this season, which has resulted in a career-worsts in BB/9 (4.38) and WHIP (1.50) through 141.2 innings. Sandoval is tentatively scheduled to face a tough Rangers' lineup at home early next week.

Takes third straight loss
Sandoval (7-13) allowed eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits and struck out four without walking a batter over five innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Mariners.
Impact
Sandoval got no support in the 8-0 defeat, as the Angels mustered just four hits. He gave up three runs in the first inning and then five more over the fourth and fifth frames. The one positive was that Sandoval didn't walk a batter for the first time since June 10. The southpaw is at a 4.48 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 119:66 K:BB through 136.2 innings over 26 starts. He's projected for a tough road outing at Tampa Bay next week.

Bested by Orioles
Sandoval (7-12) allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Orioles.
Impact
Sandoval has given up at least four runs in four of his last five outings, and he's walked no fewer than three batters in any of those starts. It was fair to expect him to have some difficulty with the Orioles' deep lineup, which produced just one extra-base hit against the southpaw. Sandoval's ERA ticked up to 4.31 with a 1.38 WHIP and 115:66 K:BB through 131.2 innings over 25 starts. He's projected for another tough start in Seattle in next week.

Struggles in fourth inning
Sandoval (7-11) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over 3.2 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Athletics.
Impact
Sandoval was cruising until a troublesome fourth inning saw Oakland rally for all five runs on his line. It's the third time he's given up five-plus runs over his last four starts, but this is the first time since June 29 that he's surrendered five or more earned runs. The southpaw is at a 4.19 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 112:62 K:BB through 126.2 innings across 24 starts this season, failing to replicate his performance from 2022 when he posted a 2.91 ERA in 148.2 innings. Sandoval is lined up for a difficult home start versus the Orioles next week.

Stingy in seventh win
Sandoval (7-10) picked up the win in Friday's 3-1 victory over the Mets, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out seven.
Impact
The southpaw generated 34 called or swinging strikes among his 107 pitches, and the only blemish on Sandoval's final line came on a Francisco Lindor solo shot in the third inning. Sandoval has given up two earned runs or less in six of seven starts since the All-Star break, posting a 2.89 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 39:23 K:BB through 37.1 innings over that stretch. He lines up to face a choice opponent in his next outing, which is likely to come next weekend in Oakland.

Falters in loss Saturday

Impact
Sandoval got through three scoreless frames before he yielded two runs on two hits in the fourth. Those were the only two earned runs he surrendered -- when the Rays put up four runs against him in the fifth, they were all unearned due to a two-out error by Jordyn Adams. Still, Sandoval can't be entirely absolved of blame since he gave up four consecutive hits (including two doubles) following Adams' miscue. This was the second straight disappointing outing for the lefty hurler, as he gave up five runs (four earned) over 2.2 frames in his previous start. Prior to the pair of poor performances, Sandoval appeared to be putting things together with a 1.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 27:14 :BB over 29 innings across a five-game stretch.

Walks six in loss
Sandoval (6-9) yielded five runs (four earned) on four hits and six walks over 2.2 innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Rangers.
Impact
Sandoval allowed two runs in the second inning followed by three more in the third and struggled with his command all night. He gave up two or fewer runs in five straight starts before Monday's hiccup. His ERA climbed to 4.09 with a lackluster 98:52 K:BB through 112.1 frames. Sandoval is currently lined up to face the Reds at home in his next outing.

Takes no-decision
Sandoval allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out eight over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday.
Impact
Sandoval earned a quality start, but he lost his chance at the win when he allowed a game-tying home run to J.D. Davis in the seventh inning. Over his last five outings, Sandoval has given up just nine runs (six earned) across 29 innings. He's now at a 4.02 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 92:46 K:BB through 109.2 innings through 20 starts this season. The southpaw is lined up for a tough road start in Texas next week.

Tough loss Tuesday
Sandoval (6-8) took the loss Tuesday as the Angels fell 5-1 to Atlanta, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out three.
Impact
The lefty wasn't exactly sharp, throwing only 53 of 90 pitches for strikes, but Sandoval was mostly able to escape trouble and limit the damage. Unfortunately, he was out-dueled by Spencer Strider. Sandoval has been tagged for two runs or less in four straight starts since the beginning of July, posting a 2.42 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over that stretch despite a lackluster 19:13 K:BB through 22.1 innings. He'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Giants.

Nabs win in nightcap of twin bill
Sandoval (6-7) earned the win in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against Detroit, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings.
Impact
Sandoval needed 97 pitches to get through five frames, but he kept the Tigers off the scoreboard outside of a two-run third inning. The timing of the left-hander's turn in the rotation in relation to the All-Star break limited him to just three appearances in July, but he pitched well in those outings, posting a 2.08 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 17.1 frames. Sandoval may be turning things around after compiling a 4.57 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 15 starts through the end of June.

Strong in fifth win
Sandoval (5-7) allowed a run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven over 7.1 innings, earning the win Tuesday over the Yankees.
Impact
Sandoval's control issues popped up again, but he was able to counter it by allowing little dangerous contact. The only run against him was Gleyber Torres' solo home run in the third inning. Sandoval gave up 12 runs (11 earned) over 15 innings across his last three starts before the All-Star break. He's now at a 4.16 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 77:39 K:BB through 93 innings over 17 starts this season. The southpaw is projected to make his next start on the road in Detroit.

Wild in no-decision
Sandoval logged a no-decision against San Diego on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks while striking out five batters over five innings.
Impact
The positive for Sandoval was that he allowed just a pair of singles and one earned run (though a first-inning unearned run was the result of his own error). However, the left-hander struggled with his control, throwing just 48 of 85 pitches for a strike and walking four batters. It was the sixth time over his past eight outings that he's issued multiple free passes, and he's given up four walks three times during that span. Not coincidentally, Sandoval has struggled during that stretch, posting a 5.71 ERA and a 1-5 record. Sandoval's 3.8 BB/9 on the season is on track to be his highest since his rookie campaign.

Surrenders seven in loss
Sandoval (4-7) took the loss Thursday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks over 5 innings against the White Sox. He struck out eight.
Impact
Most of the damage against Sandoval came in the third inning, where he allowed six runs on six hits. The 26-year-old left-hander has struggled lately, pitching to a 7.46 ERA through five starts in June. Overall, Sandoval now sports a 4.69 ERA with a 1.50 WHIP and 65:32 K:BB in 15 starts (80.2 innings) this season. Sandoval will look to get back on track in his next outing, currently lined up for next week in San Diego.
