Blanks Phillies
Liberatore (1-1) tossed six scoreless innings in a win over the Phillies on Sunday, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Impact
Liberatore had an outstanding performance leading to his first win of the season. He had almost 60 pitches through three frames but went nine up, nine down over the next three innings. Liberatore did an excellent job of getting ahead of the count and his slider was fooling hitters with a 66.7 percent whiff rate. Liberatore owns a 3.93 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 18:1 K:BB in 18.1 innings and lines up for a road start against the Mets this week.

Tagged with five runs
Liberatore (0-1) yielded five runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings Monday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Pirates.
Impact
Liberatore stumbled early Monday, serving up a solo homer to Joey Bart in the first inning and allowing three runs in the second. While the poor outing drove his ERA up to 5.84, Liberatore has not walked a batter through 12.1 frames this season. He forced 13 whiffs Monday, with six coming against his slider. Liberatore's next start is lined up to be this weekend at home against the Phillies.

Logs quality start Tuesday
Liberatore didn't factor into the decision after allowing three runs on six hits and no walks in six innings Tuesday against the Angels. He struck out four.
Impact
Liberatore registered a quality start in his season debut, throwing 53 of his 77 pitches for strikes Tuesday. The Angels did their damage against the 25-year-old southpaw in the third inning, with Luis Rengifo driving one run in on a double and Mike Trout plating two more with a double of his own. Liberatore's next start lines up for early next week in a favorable matchup against Pittsburgh.

Impact
The Cardinals will operate with a modified six-man rotation at the beginning of the season, with Liberatore part of it and Steven Matz pitching in relief for now before making a start on April 16. Michael McGreevy nearly won a rotation spot and looms at Triple-A Memphis, but it sounds as if Liberatore will be given a long leash in the rotation. The left-hander has a career 3.89 ERA as a reliever versus a 5.86 ERA as a starter.

Beginning season in rotation
Liberatore will be St. Louis' fifth starter to begin the campaign, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Impact
This news comes as a mild surprise after Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said in mid-March that Liberatore would likely open the season in the bullpen. Instead, the left-hander will work as St. Louis' fifth starter while Steven Matz will begin the campaign in the bullpen and Michael McGreevy will start the season in the minors. The Cardinals plan to move to a six-man rotation beginning April 16, and Liberatore figures to remain a starter then as long as his performance is up to par early in the campaign.

Impact
Liberatore has been stretched out this spring and has pitched well, allowing just two runs with a 5:2 K:BB over 9.2 innings. However, while the Cardinals are not ruling out the left-hander making starts for them in the future, Liberatore has a much clearer path in relief. The southpaw has a career 3.89 ERA as a reliever versus a 5.86 ERA as a starter.
