INJURIES

Wild in sixth loss Liberatore (4-6) took the loss Sunday against the Cubs, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks in five-plus innings. He struck out three.
Impact Liberatore couldn't get through the sixth inning Sunday, but he was at least able to toss four scoreless frames in between the sixth inning and a two-run first frame by the Cubs. The 26-year-old southpaw was especially wild, landing just 44 of his 78 pitches for strikes while also plunking a trio of batters, so he might have been fortunate to complete five innings. Liberatore has an uninspiring 5.34 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 82:35 K:BB over 87.2 innings, and he's given up at least three runs in five of his last six outings.

Bounces back with dominant outing Liberatore (4-5) earned the win Tuesday against Atlanta, allowing one run on one hit and four walks while striking out nine over five innings.
Impact Liberatore bounced back in a big way, throwing 60 of his 98 pitches for strikes while generating 15 whiffs on 41 swings. His lone run allowed came via an Ozzie Albies sacrifice fly in the third inning. At one point the left-hander struck out six in a stretch of 10 batters faced. Entering Tuesday, Liberatore had struggled heavily in June, posting a 10.34 ERA and 1.91 WHIP across four starts (15.2 innings). He now owns a 5.33 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 79:33 K:BB across 82.2 innings and is scheduled to face the Cubs on the road in his next start.

Unravels in fourth inning Liberatore (3-5) allowed six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.1 innings to take the loss versus the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Impact Liberatore got through three innings with little trouble, but Arizona piled on six runs in the fourth. He allowed back-to-back home runs to LuJames Groover and Ketel Marte to cap that rally. Liberatore's decent start to the year has fallen apart in June -- he's allowed 22 runs (18 earned) across 15.2 innings over his four starts this month. He's now at a 5.56 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 70:29 K:BB through 77.2 innings through 16 starts overall. The southpaw is tentatively projected to make his next start at Atlanta, which is not a matchup that would much bounce-back potential.

Matthew Liberatore is beginning to resemble another frustrating Cardinals mirage Matthew Liberatore's career is veering off track after a half season of so much promise.
JUNE 19 • REDBIRDRANTS.COM
Crushed by KC Liberatore (3-4) allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and no walks while striking out two batters over 1.2 innings to take the loss against Kansas City on Thursday.
Impact Liberatore got an early lead when St. Louis scored twice in the top of the first inning, but he gave one run back in the bottom of the frame on a Bobby Witt (knee) solo homer. Things got much worse for Liberatore in the second, as the Royals swarmed him for six hits -- five of which were doubles -- en route to six runs. The left-hander ultimately gave way to a reliever after retiring only two batters in that disastrous frame. It was the shortest outing of the season for Liberatore, and he hasn't been providing much depth of late, completing fewer than five frames in three straight outings. He's had a few promising starts this season, but it's mostly been a struggle for the veteran pitcher, who now has an ugly 5.23 ERA and 1.56 WHIP along with a 67:27 K:BB through 72.1 innings spanning 15 appearances.

Impact The Cardinals gave the southpaw an early 4-0 lead after two innings, but Liberatore served up a trio of long balls in the third and fourth frames to tie it up, eventually getting lifted in the fifth after 70 pitches (46 strikes). It's the first time since April 25 he's been taken deep multiple times in a start, but Liberatore's been shaky over the last month even when keeping the ball in the yard, stumbling to a 5.65 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB through 28.2 innings over his last six outings. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which lines up to come on the road next week in Kansas City.

Impact The Cardinals grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Liberatore promptly gave up back in the top of the third before getting tagged for two more runs the following frame, eventually getting lifted after 84 pitches (47 strikes). It's the fourth time in his last five trips to the mound that he's allowed at least three earned runs, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 5.18 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 32:10 K:BB through 24.1 innings. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, which is set to come on the road next weekend in Minnesota.

Effective in third win Liberatora (3-3) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.1 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Cubs on Sunday.
Impact Liberatore worked into the sixth inning for the first time in four starts. While he didn't rack up the same level of strikeouts as he had recently, he was able to end a stretch of three starts without a win while posting his first scoreless outing of the season. Liberatore is now at a 4.35 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 57:23 K:BB across 62 innings over 12 starts this season. The southpaw's next start is projected to be at home versus the Reds.

Career-high 10 Ks in loss Liberatore (2-3) took the loss Monday against the Brewers, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts across five innings.
Impact After recording a career-high nine strikeouts in his previous start against the Pirates, Liberatore took no time in setting a new career best with 10 versus Milwaukee. Despite having the strikeout stuff working of late, Liberatore's results have left a lot to be desired, as he again failed to go six innings for the fifth time in his last six starts and has given up three runs or more in three straight starts and six of his last nine outings. The left-hander has a disappointing 4.76 ERA and 53:29 K:BB across 56.2 innings this season. His xERA of 5.67 suggests Liberatore has been lucky to avoid more trouble. Batters are hitting the ball hard off him with a 91.4 average exit velocity.

Fans nine in no-decision Liberatore allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine batters over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
Impact Liberatore began the game well, opening with four scoreless frames. However, he lost steam in the fifth, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks before being pulled. While that soured Liberatore's outing significantly, a positive takeaway is that he racked up 13 whiffs and a season-high nine punchouts after previously not striking out more than six batters in any appearance. Liberatore will carry a mediocre 4.70 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 43:20 K:BB across 51.2 innings into his next start, which is lined up to be a road matchup against Cincinnati.
