The Cardinals need to move on from Matthew Liberatore Tough watch, tough scene, easy decision.

It's Time for Cardinals to Do Something About Matthew Liberatore The St. Louis Cardinals dropped to .500 with a 7-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. Left-hander Matthew Liberatore drew the start a...

Lasts just 3.2 frames Monday Liberatore (5-8) took the loss against the Cubs on Monday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 3.2 innings.
Impact Liberatore never seemed to settle in, giving up a run in each of the first, second and third frames. He was pulled with two outs in the fourth and replaced by Hunter Dobbins, who finished off the final 5.1 innings for St. Louis. Dobbins was only slightly more effective in yielding four runs, though his season ERA of 3.74 is vastly superior to Liberatore's 5.26 mark. It remains to be seen if the two will continue to work in a piggyback situation, but Liberatore is at least tentatively lined up to make his next start in Toronto this weekend.

Piggyback with Dobbins on Monday Liberatore is expected to be piggybacked by Hunter Dobbins in Monday's start versus the Cubs, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact The opposition is slashing .358/.463/.627 off Liberatore the third time through the batting order, so the southpaw will likely be allowed to face the lineup just twice before turning things over to Dobbins. Liberatore has collected a 5.18 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 95:38 K:BB over 99 innings covering 20 starts for St. Louis this season.

Blitzed early in loss Liberatore (5-7) allowed five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.1 innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Angels.
Impact Liberatore gave up all five runs in the first inning before settling down to avoid overtaxing the bullpen. He's had some flashes of skill this year, but inconsistency has been a prominent theme -- he's allowed at least four runs in six of his last eight outings. Overall, the southpaw has a 5.18 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 95:38 K:BB through 99 innings over 20 starts. Liberatore's next start is projected to be at home versus the Cubs early next week since the Cardinals are opting to temporarily go to a six-man rotation this week.

Throws six scoreless innings Liberatore (5-6) allowed four hits and a walk while striking out six over six scoreless innings to earn the win over Atlanta on Saturday.
Impact This was Liberatore's first quality start in over two months -- his last was May 7 versus the Padres. He has completed six frames in just four of his 19 starts on the year, as elevated walk (3.5 BB/9) and home run (1.6 HR/9) rates have limited his ability to pitch deep into games this season. He's at a 5.00 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 88:36 K:BB through 93.2 innings.

Wild in sixth loss Liberatore (4-6) took the loss Sunday against the Cubs, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks in five-plus innings. He struck out three.
Impact Liberatore couldn't get through the sixth inning Sunday, but he was at least able to toss four scoreless frames in between the sixth inning and a two-run first frame by the Cubs. The 26-year-old southpaw was especially wild, landing just 44 of his 78 pitches for strikes while also plunking a trio of batters, so he might have been fortunate to complete five innings. Liberatore has an uninspiring 5.34 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 82:35 K:BB over 87.2 innings, and he's given up at least three runs in five of his last six outings.
JULY 5 • ROTOWIRE
Bounces back with dominant outing Liberatore (4-5) earned the win Tuesday against Atlanta, allowing one run on one hit and four walks while striking out nine over five innings.
Impact Liberatore bounced back in a big way, throwing 60 of his 98 pitches for strikes while generating 15 whiffs on 41 swings. His lone run allowed came via an Ozzie Albies sacrifice fly in the third inning. At one point the left-hander struck out six in a stretch of 10 batters faced. Entering Tuesday, Liberatore had struggled heavily in June, posting a 10.34 ERA and 1.91 WHIP across four starts (15.2 innings). He now owns a 5.33 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 79:33 K:BB across 82.2 innings and is scheduled to face the Cubs on the road in his next start.

Unravels in fourth inning Liberatore (3-5) allowed six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.1 innings to take the loss versus the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Impact Liberatore got through three innings with little trouble, but Arizona piled on six runs in the fourth. He allowed back-to-back home runs to LuJames Groover and Ketel Marte to cap that rally. Liberatore's decent start to the year has fallen apart in June -- he's allowed 22 runs (18 earned) across 15.2 innings over his four starts this month. He's now at a 5.56 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 70:29 K:BB through 77.2 innings through 16 starts overall. The southpaw is tentatively projected to make his next start at Atlanta, which is not a matchup that would much bounce-back potential.
