GAME LOG

INJURIES

Saves extra-inning win Andriese picked up the save Saturday, striking out one over a scoreless 10th inning in a 6-4 extra-inning win over Baltimore.
Impact This was Boston's first game that was headed toward needing a ninth-inning closer, but Adam Ottavino surrendered a one-run lead by giving up two runs in the eighth inning. When Boston tied the game in the top of the ninth, Matt Barnes, who was going to get a save opportunity, came on and got the game into extra frames. After the Red Sox plated two in the top of the 10th, manager Alex Cora went with Andriese, whose primary role is that of a multi-inning reliever, for the save. Andriese has allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings. Two of his four appearances have lasted more than three outs.

Beginning year in bullpen Manager Alex Cora said Andriese rejoined the team Tuesday and is slated to begin the season in the bullpen, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
Impact Andriese had been away from the team for only a few days due to COVID-19-related contact-tracing concerns, so he should be ready to go for Opening Day. Though Eduardo Rodriguez (arm) is expected to begin the season on the injured list, the Red Sox are expected to turn to Tanner Houck rather than Andriese to fill in as the fifth starter to begin the season.

Away from team Andriese was scratched from his spring start against the Pirates on Saturday due to contact tracing, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Impact Manager Alex Cora announced Saturday that right-hander Matt Barnes has tested positive for COVID-19, and Andriese is one of several members of the organization who will be away from the team due to contact tracing. Andriese is expected to serve as a swingman for Boston this year, but it's not yet clear whether he'll be able to return to the team in time for Opening Day.

Throws four scoreless innings Andriese allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three over four scoreless innings in Tuesday's spring game against Atlanta.
Impact Andriese pitched in relief after game starter Tanner Houck. Both pitchers were on the fringe of the rotation, as Boston manager Alex Cora kicked around the idea of six-man rotation. Cora announced Tuesday he will go with a five-man rotation, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. He didn't name the five, but it's fairly obvious it will consist of Eduardo Rodriguez, Nathan Eovaldi, Garrett Richards, Martin Perez and Nick Pivetta. As such, Andriese is expected to pitch in a swing role while Houck, who struggled mightily with command in Grapefruit League play, will likely head to the alternate site and eventually Triple-A Worcester.

Retires all six batters Andriese struck out one over a scoreless two innings in Thursday's spring game against the Orioles.
Impact Andriese retired all six batters faced during a strike-zone pounding outing. At this point, Andriese is being prepared as a starter and reliever and will likely pitch in both roles, but he could emerge in the rotation if Boston deploys a six-man rotation. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is working with a six-man starting staff during spring training but has not committed to that configuration for the regular season.

Will start Thursday Andriese will start Thursday's spring game against Baltimore, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Impact The Red Sox are rolling out a six-man rotation during the first week of spring games but are not committing to that number for the regular season. Andriese has been used as both a starter and a reliever during his MLB career and will be stretched out during spring training.

Possible swing man Boston manager Alex Cora said Andriese is being targeted for a swingman role, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. "We're going to stretch him as a starter and see where we go th...
Impact Cora mentioned Brian Johnson, who served in a similar role for the 2018 champion Red Sox, when discussing Andriese's likely role in 2021. Johnson threw 99.1 innings in 2018, making 13 starts and 25 appearances out of the bullpen. It should be a familiar role for Andriese, who has made 50 starts and 123 relief appearances during a six-year MLB career.

Hits open market Andriese was non-tendered by the Angels on Wednesday.
Impact He has operated as a long reliever and/or swing man for his entire career and has not logged an ERA under 4.50 since 2016. Last year, he posted a 4.50 ERA and a career-best 1.00 WHIP, so he should catch on somewhere, but he may need to accept a pay cut.

Picks up save in second straight Andriese picked up the save against the Rockies on Sunday, striking out four across two scoreless innings. He did not allow a baserunner.
Impact After Andriese picked up his first save of the campaign in Saturday's win, manager Joe Maddon didn't hesitate to go right back to the right-hander Sunday. Andriese logged two clean innings, striking out four Rockies while not allowing a baserunner. Though Ty Buttrey and Felix Pena have received the bulk of save opportunities in recent weeks, it would not be surprising to see Andriese get another shot to close going forward.

Collects first save Andriese earned the save against Colorado on Saturday, pitching a perfect inning and striking out one batter.
Impact With usual closer Ty Buttrey having been deployed in the 10th inning, the Angels turned to Andriese to shut the door on the Rockies after jumping to a three-run lead. The right-hander was up to the task, needing only seven pitches to nail down the save. Andriese hasn't been all that effective for the Angels this season -- he has a 5.40 ERA over 10 outings -- so he'll likely resume his low-leverage role moving forward.
