Impact Gilbert scattered three hits across four innings and got the first two batters to ground out in the fifth inning before Adam Engel reached second base following an error by Cal Raleigh. Engel came home to score when the subsequent batter -- Jake Burger -- singled on a pop-up to short left field, but Gilbert got out of the inning by striking out the dangerous Luis Robert. Through two starts, Gilbert has given up only two runs across 10 innings while posting an 11:1 K:BB ratio. He's tentatively slated to pitch next week against the Rangers.

The former top prospect finished strong in his rookie season but had trouble with the long ball all year. If he's able to limit home runs, he should impress in his sophomore campaign.

Step back in second spring start Gilbert allowed five earned runs on five hits and a walk across 3.2 innings in a Cactus League loss to the Royals on Tuesday. He struck out four.

Impact The 24-year-old had started spring with a performance reminiscent of several of his strong September starts last season, allowing just a solo home run and a walk across three innings versus the Guardians on Thursday. However, matters were clearly different Tuesday, with Kyle Isbel doing the most damage off Gilbert in the form of a three-run home run in the fourth inning. The right-hander should have at least one more chance to get the ship back on course ahead of a regular season that he'll open as Seattle's No. 3 starter.

The Mariners are right in the fold of things for a potential wild-card spot and Gilbert could potentially see at least another start if they can secure one of the final two playoff spots.
