INJURIES

Jettisoned to Triple-A The Astros optioned Teng to Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Teng was activated from the injured list in mid-July after missing a few weeks due to a knee sprain, but Houston elected to demote him after just two appearances, during which he gave up two runs on three hits with a 4:2 K:BB and four hit batsmen across 4.1 innings. The right-hander pitched to a 2.19 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 8.8 K/9 through his first 17 outings of the year, but he has a 6.89 ERA across his past eight appearances (31.1 innings).

Earns win in relief Friday Weng (5-6) earned the win in relief Friday against the White Sox after allowing two runs on two hits and a walk across two innings. He struck out one.
Impact Teng pitched the fourth and fifth innings, as the Astros had to come up with a plan on the spot after Spencer Arrighetti (foot) was taken out of the game following the first inning. Teng has made 10 starts and 15 relief appearances this season, and he could be a candidate to rejoin the rotation if Arrighetti is forced to miss time.

Walker, Smith spark the Astros' 8-run 6th inning in an 9-5 win over the White Sox

Christian Walker hit a three-run double, Cam Smith added a two-run homer in Houston’s eight-run sixth inning and the Astros overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Chicago White So...

Works in long relief Sunday Teng struck out three and allowed one hit and one walk across 2.1 innings of relief Sunday in the Astros' 5-2 loss to the Orioles.
Impact Before landing on the injured list July 1 due to a right knee sprain, Teng had started in each of his previous nine appearances with the Astros. However, with the Houston rotation having since reclaimed some health, Teng looks like he'll have to settle for a bullpen role while he's with the big club for the time being. Given that Teng tossed 46 pitches Sunday and likely won't be available in relief for at least the next couple of days, it wouldn't be surprising if the Astros optioned him to Triple-A Sugar Land to clear a spot on the active roster for Ronel Blanco (elbow), who will be activated from the 60-day IL to start Monday versus the Marlins.
JULY 20 • ROTOWIRE
Activated from IL The Astros activated Teng (knee) from the 15-day injured list Friday.
Impact Teng had originally been optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land in late June, but the transaction was changed to a placement on the 15-day IL with a right knee sprain. Teng will rejoin Houston's bullpen after making 10 starts for the team. He has a 4.36 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 63:28 K:BB across 64 innings spanning 23 appearances this season.
JULY 17 • ROTOWIRE
Goes on IL after option rescinded The Astros rescinded Teng's option and placed him on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right knee sprain, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Impact Teng had been sent down to Triple-A Sugar Land following Saturday's start versus the Tigers, but it's been determined he suffered an injury before that transaction so he's now on the IL instead. It's unclear how long the right-hander might be sidelined.
JULY 1 • ROTOWIRE
Sent down after Saturday's start Teng was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land on Saturday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Impact Teng made the start Saturday against Detroit and gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. That continued a rough June for the right-hander, who has given up at least four earned runs in four of his five starts this month. Teng's demotion to the minors makes room on the 26-man roster for reliever Miguel Ullola, who was recalled from Sugar Land on Saturday. However, Teng's spot in the rotation could soon be taken by Christian Javier (shoulder), who tossed 75 pitches in his most recent rehab start last Sunday and appears to be closing in on returning from the IL.
JUNE 28 • ROTOWIRE
Escapes with no-decision Saturday Teng didn't factor into the decision Saturday in an 8-6 win over the Tigers, coughing up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out one.
Impact A grand slam by Kerry Carpenter in the third inning accounted for most of the damage off Teng, but a late rally by Houston took the right-hander off the hook for his seventh loss of 2026. Teng has given up at least five runs in four of five June starts, and while some unearned runs have softened the blow to his ratios, he still carries a 7.77 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 20:9 K:BB through 22 innings on the month. He's currently scheduled to make his next start at home next week against the Twins, but with Cristian Javier (shoulder) having built up to 75 pitches in his most recent rehab outing, Teng's time in the rotation may be about to end.

Detroit Tigers host the Houston Astros Saturday

Slated to start Saturday Teng will start Saturday's game against the Tigers, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact There had been speculation that Cristian Javier (shoulder) would come off the injured list to start Saturday in Detroit, but the Astros are giving Teng another turn through the rotation while Javier continues to work his way back. Teng had a nice bounce-back game against the Guardians last time out, allowing just one run on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts over six innings to pick up his fourth win.
JUNE 26 • ROTOWIRE
Six strong innings in fourth win Teng (4-6) earned the win Sunday against Cleveland, allowing one run on four hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out four.
Impact Teng delivered one of his finest starts of the year, tying a season high in innings in his second quality start. The 27-year-old right-hander is still settling into his transition in Houston's rotation, logging a 5.13 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 42:20 K:BB across 40.1 innings as a starter this year. Given that he sports a 1.80 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB over 20 frames as a reliever, Teng could revert back to the bullpen once Cristian Javier (elbow) is ready to return to action.

Struggles again Monday Teng (3-6) took the loss against Detroit on Monday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out nine batters over 3.1 innings.
Impact It's not often that a starter has dominant swing-and-miss stuff and still gets crushed, but that's exactly what happened to Teng on Monday. The right-hander racked up 14 whiffs on 81 pitches, and nine of the 10 outs he recorded came on strikeouts, but everything else about his line was ugly. Teng served up three long balls, hit two batters and logged his shortest start since becoming fully stretched out as part of the rotation. He seemed to be settling in as a starter over the second half of May, posting a 1.69 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over his final three starts of that month. However, the wheels have fallen off since the calendar turned to June. In three starts this month, Teng has allowed a whopping 17 runs (14 earned) across 12.1 frames.

Crushed by Angels Teng (3-5) took the loss Tuesday, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out five batters over four innings against the Angels.
Impact Teng was ambushed early, as the Angels got to him for seven runs over the first two innings. The right-hander closed out his outing with two scoreless frames, but the early damage was more than enough to send him to defeat. Teng did manage to keep the ball in the park, and five of the seven hits against him were singles, but he issued three free passes and hit two batters on a night when his control was clearly lacking. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which is tentatively slated to be a home matchup versus Detroit.

Takes fourth loss Teng (3-4) took the loss against Pittsburgh on Thursday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out one batter over five-plus innings.
Impact Teng gave up a run on two hits in the first inning but faced the minimum over his subsequent three frames. The right-hander allowed two baserunners while getting through a scoreless fifth, but things fell apart for him in the sixth. In that inning, Teng allowed four straight hits -- including a two-run homer -- before he was pulled before having recorded an out. That was enough for Teng to end up with the loss in a game during which the Astros' offense managed just one run. Thursday marked the first time this season that Teng has surrendered more than three runs in an outing, and with just one punchout his three-game stretch of recording six-plus strikeouts came to an end. He still holds a strong 3.06 ERA along with a 1.17 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB over 47 innings spanning 19 appearances (six starts).

Hurt by homers in no-decision Teng didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Brewers, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts across five innings.
Impact Teng generated a season-high 13 whiffs on his 91 pitches Friday and matched his season high with seven strikeouts. Over his last three outings, all starts since entering the rotation full time, Teng has racked up 20 strikeouts across 16 innings. However, walks have been a problem, issuing 11 free passes during that span. The home run ball was an issue against Milwaukee, as Teng surrendered a solo homer and two-run shot for his only allowed runs. Since becoming a member of the Houston rotation, Teng has yielded six runs on 12 hits and 12 walks with 21 strikeouts across 19 innings.
