Headed down to Triple-A Teng was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Impact The move corresponds with the Giants removing Sean Hjelle (elbow) from the 15-day IL. Teng has struggled in his first season in the majors, allowing 12 earned runs on 15 hits and eight walks over 11 innings. The right-hander will look to get his command back with Triple-A Sacramento, where he posted a 4.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 79 innings in 2023.

Impact The move corresponds with Luke Jackson (back) being placed on the Giants' injured list. Teng started 2023 in Double-A Richmond but managed to work his way up to Triple-A Sacramento in June. With Sacramento, Teng posted a 4.22 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 96:48 K:BB over 79 innings while going 6-5 over 16 starts.

Receives 40-man spot The Giants added Teng to their 40-man roster Tuesday.

Impact Teng split time between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento last season, putting up a 4.42 ERA and 1.36 WHIP through 126.1 combined innings. Teng needs to work on his command before he can be relied on in the majors. but his impressive strikeout numbers warrant protection from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.

Impact Teng has shown some upside with a 13.0 K/9 over 47.1 innings with Richmond this season. He also posted a 4.75 ERA in his second season at Double-A, but his 3.23 FIP suggests he had some poor luck. He rides a sweeper and mixes in a fastball, though he may need to develop a third pitch to navigate the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He'll likely spend the rest of 2023 at Triple-A.

Sweeper leading to success Teng has a 2.63 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 24 innings across six starts for Double-A Richmond.

Impact According to Dylan White of Baseball America, Teng throws his sweeper nearly two-thirds of the time. That's an extreme percentage, especially for a starting pitcher, but his breaking ball is a better pitch than his 94-mph fastball. Essentially a two-pitch pitcher right now, Teng has gone between 3.2 innings and 4.2 innings in all six starts.
