INJURIES

Unlikely to win roster spot Ruiz is hitting just .130 (3-for-23) with one walk and no stolen bases in 12 games this spring. He appears to be unlikely to win a roster spot, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Ruiz is healthy after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in late September. He played just 45 games between the knee injury and a left wrist strain. He'll likely need revive his career for awhile at Triple-A before getting another chance in the big leagues.
MARCH 11, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Playing in spring opener Ruiz (knee/wrist) is starting in left field and batting sixth in the Athletics' first game of spring training Saturday versus San Diego.
Impact Ruiz ended last season on the 60-day IL due to a left wrist strain, and he also underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in late September. The speedy outfielder appears to have recovered from both issues during the offseason and will look to get back on track in 2025 after playing in only 45 combined contests between the majors and minors last year. Ruiz may need to have a strong camp in order to make the Athletics' Opening Day roster, however.

Undergoes knee surgery Ruiz (wrist) underwent right knee arthroscopic surgery Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact A patella tendon debridement and a chondroplasty procedure were performed on the knee. Ruiz -- who had already been ruled out for the season with a left wrist strain -- will rehab this offseason in hopes of being ready in time for spring training. The 25-year-old played 29 games for the Athletics this season, producing a .652 OPS with two homers and five steals.
SEPTEMBER 24, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Shifts to 60-day IL The Athletics transferred Ruiz (wrist) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
Impact Ruiz has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a left wrist strain in May, so the A's will give his spot on the 40-man roster to CJ Alexander, who was claimed off waivers from Kansas City on Wednesday.
SEPTEMBER 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Out for season Manager Mark Kotsay said Saturday that Ruiz (wrist) will not return this season, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Ruiz has been on the IL since late May due to a left wrist strain, and a setback forced him off his rehab assignment July 20. After going more than a month without playing and making little progress in his recovery, the speedy outfielder will officially not make it back in time for the end of the season. He'll close the book on 2024 with a .200/.270/.382 slash line alongside five stolen bases over 29 games.

AUGUST 31, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Pulled from rehab assignment Ruiz (wrist) was pulled off his rehab assignment Saturday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Ruiz continues to feel discomfort in his injured left wrist and he will be re-evaluated by a doctor on Monday. The outfielder has been out since late May with a strained left wrist and he appeared to be on the cusp of an activation from the 10-day injured list, but his status moving forward is now uncertain.
JULY 20, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Plays full nine on defense Ruiz (wrist) started in center field and played nine innings in the ACL Athletics' extra-inning loss to the ACL Brewers on Tuesday, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
Impact While Ruiz's rehab assignment hot streak at the plate ironically was snapped against a much lower caliber of competition than he normally faces, the fact the outfielder played a full game's worth of innings on defense is the main takeaway. After logging 21 plate appearances over five games down on the farm, Ruiz may be deemed ready for activation ahead of the Athletics' first post-All-Star-break game Friday against the Angels.
JULY 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Multi-hit effort in rehab game Ruiz (wrist) played seven innings in left field during Single-A Stockton's loss to Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Impact Ruiz had gotten Saturday off after playing a full game at DH on Friday, but he encouragingly put in another robust workload on defense Sunday. Ruiz's mastery over Single-A arms continued as well, as he hit safely for the fourth time in as many rehab games. It's certainly possible Ruiz may be deemed ready for activation coming out of the All-Star break despite not having made any appearances at a higher-level affiliate during his assignment.
JULY 16, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Full rehab game at DH Ruiz (wrist) took a full game's worth of plate appearances at designated hitter for Single-A Stockton against Rancho Cucamonga on Friday, going 1-for-2 with a three-run double, two...
Impact It was yet another eventful night with the Ports for Ruiz, who's hitting .500 over his three rehab games with Stockton thus far. The fleet-footed outfielder was also playing on consecutive nights for the first time during the assignment Friday, and judging by both his performance at the plate and the green light he had on the basepaths, his previously ailing wrist appears to be back to health. It remains to be seen if the A's will allow Ruiz to finish out the weekend with either Stockton or another minor-league affiliate before activating him coming out of the All-Star break.
JULY 13, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Keeps rolling in second rehab game Ruiz (wrist) started and played seven innings in center field during Single-A Stockton's loss to Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.
Impact Ruiz has now played twice in three nights for the Ports since kicking off his rehab assignment, going 3-for-6 with Thursday's double, an RBI, a walk, a stolen base and the pair of runs. The speedy outfielder has also been able to play defense on both occasions, and he may have already proven enough to be bumped up to Triple-A Las Vegas for the next and likely final phase of his recovery.
JULY 12, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Solid rehab debut Tuesday Ruiz (wrist) went 1-for-2 with a single, an RBI sacrifice fly, a stolen base and a walk in Single-A Stockton's loss to Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday.
Impact Ruiz was making his rehab debut and drew the start in left field, logging seven innings before being substituted. Considering it was Ruiz's first taste of game action since May 22, the night was an encouraging one despite the low level of competition. The fact Ruiz was given the green light on the basepaths also seemingly bodes well for the health of his previously injured wrist, and it remains to be seen if he'll remain with the Ports for at least one more rehab game or bump up to a higher affiliate.
JULY 10, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Starting rehab assignment Tuesday Ruiz (wrist) will begin his rehab assignment with Single-A Stockton on Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Ruiz has been on the injured list since May 23 with a strained left wrist. He resumed swinging a bat July 1, and he has been making progress in his strengthening program. He'll need multiple rehab outings without any setbacks before coming off the IL. Prior to his injury, Ruiz was slashing .200/.270/.382 with five stolen bases, two home runs and eight RBI over 65 plate appearances.
JULY 9, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Could take next recovery step soon Ruiz (wrist), who's resumed swinging a bat, could begin running the bases at some point during the week of July 8, MLB.com reports.
Impact The speedy outfielder continues to make incremental progress in his recovery from a left wrist strain, and baserunning would appear to be one of the final precursors to a rehab assignment. Given Ruiz also is still likely to engage in some live batting practice before heading to the minors for a few games, he's unlikely to be ready for activation until after the All-Star break.

Lands on IL with strained wrist The Athletics placed Ruiz on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a strained left wrist, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact It's not clear when or how Ruiz suffered the injury, but he'll be sidelined for at least the next week and a half. Ruiz had made just two starts over Oakland's last 13 games and is only 2-for-19 with 10 strikeouts at the plate in May.

Swipes base as pinch runner Ruiz entered Tuesday's win over the Rockies in the eighth inning as a pinch runner and remained in the game in left field. He did not log a plate appearance but recorded a stolen b...
Impact Abraham Toro opened the eighth inning with a go-ahead solo home run for Oakland and Brent Rooker got aboard with a single two batters later, setting up Ruiz's entry into the game in a pinch-running capacity. The fleet-footed outfielder advanced to second on a Shea Langeliers walk before swiping third, but he was stranded at the hot corner after Tyler Soderstrom and Zack Gelof each struck out to end the inning. Ruiz has seen only sporadic playing time after drawing starts in four of the first seven games in May, with JJ Bleday earning the bulk of playing time in center field thanks to a productive stretch at the plate over his last 10 contests.

Spotted in Oakland clubhouse Ruiz was spotted in the Athletics' clubhouse Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Ruiz has not yet been officially recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, but it could be coming. J.D. Davis (hip/groin) is expected to be sidelined for at least a few days and could be an injured list candidate. Ruiz has a 1.004 OPS with three home runs and seven stolen bases over 11 games since his demotion to Las Vegas. Given his stolen base upside, he would immediately land back on the fantasy radar if he's recalled, although it's not clear how often the A's would plan to play him.

Optioned to minors Ruiz was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas by the Athletics on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Ruiz started just two games during Oakland's four-game set against the Guardians to open the season. Although he hit leadoff in those two contests and went 3-for-7 with an RBI and a stolen base, it wasn't enough to save his spot on the big-league roster. It's a blow to fantasy managers who used a pick on Ruiz this spring with the anticipation that he would be a big source of stolen bases. Waiver claim Tyler Nevin is absorbing Ruiz's spot on the roster.
APRIL 1, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Not in Opening Day lineup Ruiz isn't starting Thursday against the Guardians.
Impact Ruiz had been losing his grip on a starting job in Oakland's outfield, and the decision to leave him off the Opening Day lineup suggests he may have officially fallen a couple spots on the depth chart. The speedy outfielder may still see a decent amount of playing time in the field to give Seth Brown, JJ Bleday or Lawrence Butler a day off, but a reduced role could bring down the amount of stolen bases he is able to tally over the course of the season.
