Officially placed on IL
The Marlins placed Ruiz (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, retroactive to Sunday.
Impact
Ruiz sustained a high-grade left oblique strain in this past Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. The expected recovery time is 6-to-8 weeks, which will keep him out of action until at least mid-May. With Ruiz and Kyle Stowers (oblique) both sidelined to start the season, the Marlins bolstered their outfield depth by signing Austin Slater to a one-year contract Tuesday.

Ticketed for extended IL stint
Ruiz was diagnosed Sunday with a high-grade left oblique strain and is expected to require 6-to-8 weeks of recovery time, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Ruiz appeared to be on track to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster as a potential short-side platoon player due to his speed and ability to cover all three outfield spots, but the oblique injury he sustained Friday will end up forcing him to the injured list. His oblique strain is considered more severe than the one recently sustained by fellow outfielder Kyle Stowers, who is expected to miss 3-to-4 weeks. The injuries to Ruiz and Stowers likely strengthen Heriberto Hernandez's chances of breaking camp with the big club.

Has left oblique strain
Ruiz was diagnosed with a left oblique strain following his exit from Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals, Stephen Strom of Marlins Radio Network reports.
Impact
The initial diagnosis for Ruiz was left side tightness, but further tests have revealed a more significant strain. Per Christina De Nicola of MLB.com, Ruiz will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the strain and whether he will need to open the regular season on the injured list.

Exits with side tightness
Ruiz was removed from Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals due to left side tightness, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Ruiz suffered the injury after taking a swing in the third inning and needed assistance making it into the dugout. The speedy outfielder owns just a .446 OPS this spring through 41 plate appearances and already had slim odds of breaking camp with the big club before getting hurt.

Swipes two bags Saturday
Ruiz went 0-for-2 with two stolen bases in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.
Impact
Getting the start in center field and batting third, the 27-year-old was hit by a Darlin Saladin sinker in the third inning and promptly swiped second and third base before getting stranded. Ruiz's speed has never been in question, just the skills to support it, so he'll need to do more in camp to justify winning a spot on the Marlins' 26-man roster. If Kyle Stowers' hamstring injury lingers into the regular season, however, it could open up a spot for Ruiz to begin the campaign.

Shipped to Miami
The Marlins acquired Ruiz from the Dodgers on Monday in exchange for Adriano Marrero, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Impact
Ruiz got into 19 games with the Dodgers in 2025, going 4-for-21 with one home run and four stolen bases. The 26-year-old led the American League with 67 steals in 2023, but he's managed just a .241/.296/.343 batting line over parts of four major-league seasons and is regarded as a poor defensive outfielder. Ruiz has a better chance to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster than he would have the Dodgers', but he does have minor-league options remaining.

Cracks first homer
Ruiz went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Brewers.
Impact
The 26-year-old drew the start in left field and slugged his first long ball since April 17, 2024, when with the Athletics, with a 413-foot blast off Milwaukee starter Jose Quintana in the fifth. Ruiz was promoted from Triple-A Oklahoma City on July 3 after slashing .292/.394/.458 with eight homers and 38 stolen bases across 300 plate appearances. The Los Angeles outfielder has been used strictly in a short-side platoon role at the big leagues, posting a .250 (4-for-16) average with six strikeouts in 12 games since promotion.
