Placed on COVID-19 list Hernandez was placed on the COVID-19-related injured list Thursday, Andre Fernandez of Herald Sports reports.

Impact Officially, the Marlins announced Hernandez was placed on the injured list with no designation, with the implication being that his absence is COVID-19 related. The right-hander will be replaced in the bullpen by Tommy Nance, who was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.

Returns in relief role Hernandez was recalled by the Marlins on Friday and will pitch out of the bullpen, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Impact Hernandez finally had a run of good health this season, but he was demoted in early June after struggling to a 6.75 ERA in 11 appearances. He gave up too much contact, with his strikeout rate dipping to 21.6 percent, and he couldn't keep the ball on the ground, posting a 30.0 percent groundball rate. That combination led to an awful 3.4 HR/9. The Marlins will hope for better results out of the bullpen, where Hernandez could potentially scrap his largely ineffective changeup and lean on his fastball and slider. Tommy Nance was optioned to clear space on the roster.

Impact Hernandez struggled over the first two months of the regular season, and he'll ultimately lose his spot in the Marlins' rotation after allowing 12 runs on 15 hits and two walks while striking out 10 in 8.1 innings over his last two outings. The 27-year-old generated some production in the big leagues over the last few years, so it's possible he'll rejoin the Marlins at some point if he can right the ship in Jacksonville. Braxton Garrett is with the Marlins as part of their taxi squad, and he'll likely take Hernandez's place in the starting rotation.

Coughs up four homers Hernandez allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.1 innings out of the bullpen in Friday's loss to the Giants. He struck out seven and did not factor in the decision.

Impact Hernandez entered the game in the second inning after Richard Bleier served as the opener. He quickly gave up four runs in the frame, including a three-run homer from Mike Yastrzemski. The 27-year-old then allowed a home run in each of the third, fifth and sixth innings. Hernandez now owns an unsightly 6.75 ERA through 48 innings this season. He's currently projected to face the Nationals at home next week but it's unclear if Miami will give him another turn in the rotation.
