INJURIES

Should return over weekend The Mariners plan on sending Castillo (shoulder) to their rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate for a one-game rehab assignment before activating him from the 10-day injure...
Impact Because the Mariners are playing a three-game set in Arizona this weekend, the organization wants to keep Castillo nearby for his rehab assignment rather than having him report to a higher-level affiliate. Castillo has been sidelined for only a week and a half with the inflamed right shoulder, so one tune-up outing in the minors should be all he needs to prove to the Mariners that he's healthy. Once reinstated from the IL, Castillo should re-emerge as a factor in Seattle's closer picture.

Feels good after bullpen session Castillo (shoulder) felt good after throwing a bullpen session Monday, though he's expected to need a rehab outing before returning from the injured list, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com...
Impact The Mariners previously expressed optimism that Castillo could return after spending the minimum 10 days on the injured list, but that won't be happening, as that window expired Monday. It doesn't look as though he'll miss too much more time, but he'll miss at least a few more days if the Mariners do indeed go ahead with the rehab assignment.

MRI brings good results The MRI that Castillo underwent Saturday revealed nothing more than fatigue in his inflamed right shoulder, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
Impact Since Castillo isn't dealing with any structural damage to his shoulder, the Mariners are optimistic that he'll be ready to return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible Aug. 30, or soon after. Until then, the Mariners are likely to turn to Drew Steckenrider and Paul Sewald as their primary options in save scenarios.
AUGUST 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Slated for MRI Castillo (shoulder) will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of his injury, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
Impact Castillo landed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Saturday, and his MRI will help determine whether he's dealing with any structural issues. The Mariners aren't yet sure when the right-hander will be able to return to action.
AUGUST 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on 10-day IL Castillo was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Saturday, retroactive to Aug. 20.
Impact Castillo was charged with a blown save Thursday when he allowed two runs on a hit and a walk while striking out two in one inning, and his injury helps provide an explanation for his struggles. It's not yet clear whether the right-hander will miss more than the minimum of 10 days, but Paul Sewald will likely see increased save chances in Castillo's absence.

Falters in ninth-inning assignment Castillo was charged with his fifth blown save of the season in an extra-innings win over the Rangers on Thursday, allowing two earned runs on a hit, a walk and a wild pitch over o...
Impact Castillo inherited a two-on, none-out situation when he entered the game in the bottom of the ninth, and he ended up hurting his own cause by uncorking a wild pitch and allowing a game-tying three-run home run to Jason Martin. The right-hander had carried a string of five straight scoreless appearances into Thursday's outing, but he's already been charged with a loss and three blown saves overall since donning a Mariners uniform.

Racks up first save with M's Castillo walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his 15th save of the season, and first since joining the Mariners, in a 4-2 win over the Rays.
Impact The right-hander got some revenge against his former club, fanning Brandon Lowe as he picked up his first career save in a uniform other than Tampa Bay's. Castillo has already set a new career high in saves on the season, but he figures to get most of the opportunities in Seattle over the final two months as opposed to splitting the load in the ninth as he did in Tampa.

Blows save Saturday Castillo (2-5) gave up two runs (one earned) without recording an out Saturday to blow his third save of the season in a 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Rangers.
Impact Entering the game in the bottom of the 10th inning with a chance to record his first save as a Mariner, Castillo instead saw Jonah Heim blast a 2-2 slider over the fence in center field for a walkoff homer. The right-hander should get a fairly long leash at closer as the team tries to justify flipping Kendall Graveman to the division-rival Astros in the middle of a playoff chase, but if Castillo continues to struggle in a new uniform, Paul Sewald and Drew Steckenrider remain at the ready for high-leverage work.
AUGUST 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Perfect in team debut Castillo recorded a perfect ninth inning in a win over the Rangers on Friday, an outing that marked his team debut.
Impact Having just been imported from the Rays on Thursday, Castillo didn't have to wait long before making his team debut. The hard-throwing right-hander should be locked into primary closing duties with Seattle, and Friday's effort marked his 11th straight scoreless appearance.

Shipped to Seattle Castillo was acquired by the Mariners from the Rays on Thursday in exchange for right-hander JT Chargois and infielder Austin Shenton, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact It's surprising to see Tampa Bay depart with an elite reliever -- Castillo has 14 saves, a 2.72 ERA and 33.8 percent strikeout rate -- in the midst of a playoff race, but he'll nonetheless make his way to Seattle. The right-hander should take over the closer's role with his new team following the departure of Kendall Graveman, whom the Mariners traded to the Astros earlier in the week.

Converts 14th save Castillo pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts to earn the save in Thursday's 5-4 extra-inning win over Cleveland.
Impact Castillo was able to make Tampa Bay's comeback effort stick with his perfect 10th inning. The right-hander has now strung together eight scoreless innings in his last nine outings, giving up just a hit and a walk while striking out 11 in that span. He's pitched to a strong 2.80 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 49:10 K:BB across 35.1 innings. Castillo remains the favorite for saves, but he's only been utilized in a save chance three times in his last nine outings.
JULY 23, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Carries scoreless streak into break Castillo, who secured his 13th save in a win over the Blue Jays on Saturday, now has six consecutive scoreless appearances spanning five innings.
Impact The veteran right-hander thus heads into the All-Star break with some momentum, and his current stretch of success has lowered his ERA and WHIP back down to 3.06 and 1.08, respectively. Castillo has had a couple of hiccups in the form of a pair of blown saves, but he's otherwise been a relatively steady late-inning force for manager Kevin Cash and boasts a career-high 12.0 K/9 and 32.8 percent strikeout rate.
JULY 12, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Earns 12th save Castillo struck out three batters in a perfect ninth inning and earned a save over the Angels on Friday.
Impact Castillo came in and made quick work of the Angels, fanning the side and finishing off the 4-3 win. He's now converted his last eight save chances, making him 12-for-14 on the year. The 27-year-old righty owns a 3.38 ERA with a 42:9 K:BB through 29.1 innings this season.
JUNE 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Suffers loss Sunday Castillo (2-4) suffered the loss Sunday against the Mariners after allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits and a walk in just two-thirds of an inning.
Impact Castillo entered in the 10th trying to preserve a 2-2 tie. He was facing bases-loaded, two-outs, and lost the battle to Shed Long who ended the game on a walk-off grand slam. Despite the disappointing outing, Castillo stills owns a 3.62 ERA and 38:9 K:BB to go along with a team-high 11 saves over 27.1 innings. Manager Kevin Cash has given Pete Fairbanks some save chances over the last 10 days. Fairbanks had a bit of a rough week and Castillo should still be viewed as the top save candidate for a Rays team that has dropped six in a row.
JUNE 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Grabs third hold Castillo secured his third hold in a win over the White Sox on Monday, firing a scoreless eighth inning during which he allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts.
Impact The part-time closer saw setup work two days after securing his 11th save of the season. Castillo now has scoreless appearances in seven of his last eight trips to the mound and continues to offer fantasy managers plenty of value due to his late-inning, typically high-leverage role.
JUNE 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Secures 11th save Castillo earned the save against Baltimore on Saturday, allowing one hit in one inning. He did not walk or strike out any batters.
Impact Castillo inherited a one-run lead in the ninth inning. He gave up two-out single but retired the following batter by groundout to close out the contest. The right-hander has collected 11 saves on the season while posting a 2.92 ERA across 24.2 innings

Impact Castillo saw a five-appearance scoreless streak snapped with Wednesday's stumble, which bumped his ERA from 2.78 to 3.04. Despite the hiccup, Castillo has proven largely reliable in high-leverage work thus far, converting 10 of 12 save chances and garnering a pair of holds over 23 appearances.
