INJURIES

NRI deal with Colorado The Rockies signed Castillo to a minor-league contract Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reports.
Impact Castillo, who turns 31 in January, has made just 15 appearances at the major-league level over the past two seasons, holding a 4.34 ERA and ugly 13:15 K:BB in 18.2 innings. The veteran reliever's stuff has deteriorated since his stint with the Rays, but the Rockies will take a look at him in camp to see what he might have left.
DECEMBER 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Loses 40-man roster spot Castillo was designated for assignment Sunday.
Impact He loses his spot on the 40-man roster on the final day of the season and will be a free agent this offseason. Castillo walked more batters (eight) than he struck out (six) in the big leagues this season and last recorded a save in 2022 with Seattle.
SEPTEMBER 29, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled to Minnesota The Twins recalled Castillo from Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday.
Impact Castillo has appeared in six games for the Twins this season, surrendering two earned runs across eight innings while striking out four batters and walking seven. He'll now come up from the minor leagues to give Minnesota's bullpen a fresh arm, taking the place of Kody Funderburk, who was optioned to Triple-A.
SEPTEMBER 28, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Sent down to Triple-A The Twins optioned Castillo to Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday.
Impact Just three days after he was added to the Twins' 40-man roster and 28-man active roster, Castillo will head back to the minors to open up a spot for right-hander Louie Varland, who was recalled ahead of an expected bulk-relief appearance Wednesday versus the Rays. During his brief time with the Twins, Castillo made one appearance and struck out a batter in a scoreless inning.
SEPTEMBER 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Moves up to majors The Twins selected Castillo's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday.
Impact Castillo had previously given up just two earned runs over seven innings over five appearances out of the Minnesota bullpen earlier this season, but the shiny 2.57 ERA came with an ugly 1.71 WHIP and 3:7 K:BB. He was bumped off the Twins' 40-man roster in June before he elected free agency, only to re-sign with the organization on a minor-league deal in early July. Castillo has continued to show spotty control at St. Paul this season (21 walks in 32.1 innings), so the Twins are unlikely to turn to him for high-leverage work during his latest stint in the big leagues.
SEPTEMBER 2, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Re-signs with Twins Castillo signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Wednesday.
Impact Castillo elected to become a free agent after he was pushed off the Twins' 40-man roster in June, and he will now return to the organization after exploring his options in the open market. The 30-year-old right-hander will report to Triple-A St. Paul, where he's put up a 2.50 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 18 innings this season.
JULY 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Added to big-league roster The Twins selected Castillo's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.
Impact Castillo's arrival with the big club was delayed a day by travel issues, but he'll be in its bullpen for Tuesday's contest against the Royals. The 30-year-old right-hander earned a promotion after posting a 2.50 ERA and 22:6 K:BB over 18 innings with St. Paul.
MAY 28, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Inks MiLB deal with Twins Castillo signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Saturday.
Impact After being released by the Rangers on Thursday, Castillo was able to quickly find another gig in the bullpen at Triple-A St. Paul. The 30-year-old righty held a 3.12 ERA and 1.08 WHIP through his first five MLB seasons, but he allowed six earned run across 8.2 frames with the Mariners in 2023 and continued to struggle during spring training with the Rangers. Castillo will need to regain command over his pitches in the minors before he has a shot at returning to the big leagues.
MARCH 30, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Signs on with Rangers Castillo signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Dec. 18.
Impact Castillo had a rough 2023 campaign, collecting a 6.23 ERA in eight appearances for the Mariners and a 5.13 ERA and 50:35 K:BB across 47.1 frames at Triple-A Tacoma. His velocity has also trended in the wrong direction in addition to his control. Still, Castillo will turn just 30 next month and a pitcher with his track record seems worthy of a roll of the dice on a minor-league deal.
DECEMBER 26, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strong numbers in minors Castillo has pitched to a 2-0 record and 1.04 ERA across 8.2 innings over eight appearances for Triple-A Tacoma since being outrighted to the Rainiers on May 1.
Impact The veteran right-hander is still experiencing plenty of trouble with control, however, as he's also issued nine walks. Nevertheless, Castillo has managed to consistently work around his location issues and has given up only one earned run during his time in Tacoma. Although he's currently off the 40-man roster, it certainly wouldn't be inconceivable for Castillo to eventually earn a call back to the big-league club at some point before the conclusion of the regular season.
MAY 25, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Moved off 40-man roster The Mariners outrighted Castillo to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday after he cleared waivers.
Impact After he had been one of Seattle's top relievers since he was acquired from the Rays at the 2021 trade deadline, Castillo struggled mightily over the first month of the 2023 campaign, logging a 6.23 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 7:7 K:BB in 8.2 innings before he was optioned to Triple-A on Saturday. Because Castillo is due $2.95 million in 2023 and has one more year of arbitration remaining, none of MLB's other 29 organizations were willing to put in a waiver claim for the 29-year-old right-hander. Though he no longer possesses a spot on the 40-man roster, Castillo could end up getting another look with the big club this season if he's able to right the ship at Tacoma.
MAY 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Castillo was optioned Saturday to Triple-A Tacoma.
Impact Castillo has a lengthy track record of being an effective major-league reliever, but he'll spend some time on the farm after allowing six earned runs on seven hits and seven walks through his first 8.2 innings this season out of the Mariners' bullpen. Easton McGee is up in a corresponding move to start Saturday's game in Toronto.
APRIL 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sharp through three appearances Castillo has allowed an earned run on three hits and generated a 3:0 K:BB over three innings in three Cactus League appearances.
Impact All of Castillo's 20 pitches thus far this spring have found the strike zone, underscoring how sharp the veteran right-hander has been. Castillo proved a versatile asset for both manager Scott Servais and fantasy managers during his first full season in Seattle in 2022, recording seven wins, seven saves and nine holds across 59 appearances while producing a 3.64 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.
MARCH 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Loses arbitration case Castillo lost his arbitration case against the Mariners on Wednesday and will earn $2.95 million for the 2023 season, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reports.
Impact Castillo had filed for a $3.225 million salary when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this winter. The 29-year-old reliever is projected to handle a setup role while occasionally factoring into save chances in 2023 after pitching to a 3.64 ERA and 53:22 K:BB across 54.1 innings with Seattle in 2022.

Grabs fifth hold in return Castillo, activated from the injured list earlier in the day, recorded his fifth hold in a win over the Yankees on Wednesday, firing a perfect eighth inning during which he recorde...
Impact Castillo was sharp in his return, firing eight of his 13 pitches for strikes to serve as an effective bridge to Paul Sewald in the ninth inning. The veteran right-hander, who was seeing his first game action since July 25, now boasts a 4-0 record, 1.32 ERA, two saves and four holds over the 13.2 innings covering his last 14 appearances.
AUGUST 11, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Makes return from IL The Mariners reinstated Castillo (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday.
Impact Lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino was sent to Triple-A Tacoma to clear a spot in the bullpen and on the 26-man active roster for Castillo, who had been on the shelf since July 28 with right shoulder inflammation. Castillo had a rocky rehab appearance with High-A Everett on Sunday -- he was charged with five runs (four earned) on three hits and a walk while recording only two outs -- so the Mariners could ease him back into the mix as a low-leverage reliever. Assuming Castillo quickly displays a return to form, he should re-enter the Mariners' late-inning picture and potentially factor into save situations, just as he did prior to landing on the IL.
AUGUST 10, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Heading out on rehab assignment Castillo (shoulder) is set to begin a rehab assignment in coming days with High-A Everett, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Impact Castillo has been on the shelf since July 28, with his stint retroactive to two days prior. The right-hander reliever will likely only need a couple of rehab appearances before being deemed ready for activation, and he'd be eligible to return as soon as Wednesday.
AUGUST 8, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Likely to return after 15 days Manager Scott Servais said Thursday that he expects Castillo (shoulder) to return after missing the minimum of 15 days, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
Impact Castillo landed on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation Thursday, but the issue doesn't seem to be a significant concern. Servais said the right-hander would likely be able to return after 5-6 days, but the Mariners elected to place him on the IL to avoid a shorthanded bullpen. Andres Munoz and Matt Festa will likely see increased high-leverage chances ahead of closer Paul Sewald while Castillo is sidelined.
JULY 28, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on injured list Castillo was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Thursday, retroactive to July 26.
Impact Castillo wasn't particularly sharp Monday against the Rangers, allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one in one-third of an inning, and it's possible that his injury contributed with his struggles. The 28-year-old missed a week and a half last year due to shoulder inflammation, but it's not yet clear whether he'll be able to return following a minimal IL stint this time around. Castillo's seven wins this year rank second among all relievers, while he's converted all six of his save chances with four holds. Paul Sewald should see the majority of the closing duties with Castillo sidelined, while Andres Munoz and Matt Festa could also take on additional high-leverage work.
JULY 28, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Grabs seventh win Castillo (7-1) recorded the win in an extra-inning victory over the Rangers on Saturday, firing a scoreless ninth inning during which he issued a walk and recorded a strikeout.
Impact The veteran right-hander was rewarded for preserving a 2-2 tie and sending the game into extras when J.P. Crawford knocked in Sam Haggerty with what would turn out to be the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning. Castillo is in the midst of a dominant stretch of pitching, as Saturday's appearance was his seventh consecutive of the scoreless variety and 10th blanking in the last 11 trips to the mound overall.
JULY 17, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Logs sixth save Castillo allowed a hit and an intentional walk and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Thursday's 6-5 win over the Rangers.
Impact Paul Sewald saved both games of Wednesday's doubleheader sweep over the Nationals, so he was not available Thursday. Castillo was a little shaky in putting two runners aboard, but he ended the threat when he got Adolis Garcia to fly out. Castillo hasn't allowed a run in his last 6.1 innings, though he's given up five hits and five walks in that span. He's up to six saves, three holds and a 6-1 record while adding a 3.93 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 34:15 K:BB through 34.1 innings. The right-hander should continue to serve as a setup man, and he's the favorite to get the occasional save chance when Sewald's unavailable.

From pariah to (bullpen) messiah, how the Mariners' Diego Castillo got better Just as the team weathered its slow start, Castillo survived his hellish month to deliver important innings.
JULY 12, 2022 • THEATHLETIC.COM
Picks up first save in a month Castillo allowed two hits and walked one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Blue Jays.
Impact Paul Sewald was asked to get five outs Friday and was unavailable Saturday, leaving the closing duties to Castillo. This was a shaky showing as the right-hander loaded the bases with two outs, but he got Matt Chapman on a groundout to escape the jam unscathed for his first save since June 8. Castillo's allowed three runs (two earned), eight hits, five walks and a hit batter while striking out 15 in 16 innings since the start of June, but Sewald's been even sharper, leaving the former in a setup role for now. Castillo is up to five saves with two holds, a 6-1 record, a 4.22 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 32:13 K:BB through 32 innings overall.
