Gets another start Peterson is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Cubs at Citi Field.
Impact Peterson will be making his second straight turn through the rotation as a replacement for Max Scherzer, who was traded to the Rangers on July 29. Since he had been working out of the bullpen for nearly a month, Peterson was limited to just three innings and 52 pitches in his most recent start Friday against the Orioles. The lefty should be able to work longer into Wednesday's outing, though he still could struggle to reach the five innings he would need to qualify for a win.
AUGUST 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Solid in brief outing Peterson came away with a no-decision Friday in the Mets' 10-3 loss to the Orioles, allowing one hit and three walks over three scoreless innings. He struck out one.
Impact The southpaw tossed 30 of 52 pitches for strikes in the short outing, but considering he hadn't pitched more than two innings in an appearance in nearly a month, a restricted workload was to be expected. Peterson has a 2.66 ERA in 20.1 innings since the beginning of July, but that comes with a lackluster 1.43 WHIP and 19:11 K:BB, and the jury is still out on whether the 27-year-old will ever develop into an effective rotation option. He'll make his next start, and get stretched out further, at home against the Cubs next week.
AUGUST 5, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Likely to rejoin rotation Peterson is likely to start Friday in Baltimore, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
Impact That would have been Max Scherzer's turn in the Mets' rotation, but he was traded to the Rangers on Saturday and is slated to make his debut for Texas this Thursday. Peterson, 27, has struggled to a 5.92 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 11 starts and six relief appearances this season with New York.
AUGUST 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Relegated to bullpen Peterson will work out of the bullpen going forward, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
Impact With the return of Jose Quintana from the 60-day injured list, Peterson will lose his spot in the rotation and be pushed into a multi-inning relief role. The 27-year-old southpaw has been hit around consistently this season and holds a 6.46 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 54.1 frames across 11 starts.
JULY 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strikes out seven in loss Peterson (2-7) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.1 innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Padres.
Impact Peterson gave up all three runs in the second inning, but the Mets' offense couldn't provide a sufficient response. He's allowed just three runs over 15.1 innings since his return to the big-league roster June 27, but his place in the rotation remains up in the air, likely hinging on when Jose Quintana (ribs) will be ready to make his season debut. Peterson has a 6.46 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 60:22 K:BB over 54.1 innings this season.
JULY 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses four innings Peterson allowed one run on three hits and three walks over four innings in Sunday's win against the Giants. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
Impact Peterson gave up a run on a groundout in the third inning but otherwise looked solid in his short outing. He was demoted to Triple-A Syracuse in May after posting a terrible 8.08 ERA through 39 innings. The 27-year-old has coughed up just one run over 10 innings since returning to the MLB level, lowering his season ERA to 6.61. Peterson will likely stay in the rotation for another start, which is currently lined up to be in San Diego.
JULY 3, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Rewarded with another start Peterson is listed as the Mets' probable starter for Sunday's game against the Giants at Citi Field.
Impact The Mets will unsurprisingly stick with Peterson for another turn through the rotation after he tossed six shutout frames Tuesday against a Brewers offense that has languished versus left-handed pitching all season. The Giants, meanwhile, rank closer to the middle of the pack in most offensive metrics versus southpaws, so Peterson should have a slightly tougher matchup on his hands Sunday. Peterson's performance versus Milwaukee was arguably his best of the season, as he had posted an 8.08 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in eight starts for the big club prior to being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in mid-May.
JUNE 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Returns with six shutout frames Peterson (2-6) picked up the win Tuesday versus Milwaukee after he allowed five hits and three walks across six scoreless innings. He struck out five.
Impact The left-hander was called up from Triple-A Syracuse for his first big-league start in six weeks and delivered his best outing of the campaign. Peterson still showed signs of the struggles that resulted in him being sent to the minors in mid-May with three walks and just 11 swinging strikes on 110 pitches, but he consistently worked out of trouble against the Brewers. The 27-year-old still has a bloated 7.00 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 50:17 K:BB across 45 innings this season, but the scoreless performance should be enough for him to garner another turn through the rotation.
JUNE 28, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Called up for start The Mets recalled Peterson from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday versus the Brewers at Citi Field.
Impact Peterson is back in the big leagues for the first time since mid-May, stepping in as the Mets' new No. 5 starter after the struggling Tylor Megill was optioned to Syracuse last week. While spending the past five weeks in the minors, Peterson struck out 39 batters over 32 innings, but his other ratios (4.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 12.9 BB%) during that six-start stretch weren't nearly as impressive. With Jose Quintana (rib) having now made three rehab starts in the minors and closing in on a return from the 60-day injured list, Peterson's stay in the New York rotation could be a brief one.
JUNE 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Rejoining rotation Tuesday Peterson will be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start Tuesday against the Brewers, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
Impact The left-hander has an 8.08 ERA in eight starts for the Mets this year and was demoted from the big-league rotation in mid-May. Peterson has a remarkable 4.86 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 43:23 K:BB across 37 innings for Syracuse this year, but he'll receive another look in the majors since New York requires a fifth starter this week.
JUNE 25, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A The Mets optioned Peterson to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact Peterson struggled in another spot start Monday versus the Nationals and now stands 1-6 with a brutal 8.08 ERA through 39 innings of work this season at the MLB level. Josh Walker will join the Mets' bullpen in a corresponding move.
MAY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Gives up six runs in loss Peterson (1-6) took the loss Monday, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings during a 10-3 loss the Nationals. He struck out five.
Impact Peterson has struggled in his second stint in the big leagues this year, allowing 10 runs over two starts (8.1 innings) while posting a 9:4 K:BB. The left-hander wasn't much better the first time around, surrendering 25 runs over six starts (30.2 innings). Overall, he sports a 8.08 ERA and 1.74 WHIP, but his 45:14 K:BB across 39 innings is encouraging. With Max Scherzer healthy again and Carlos Carrasco (elbow) close to returning from the injured list, Peterson may be sent back to Triple-A Syracuse soon.
MAY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
To make spot start Monday Peterson will make a spot start for the Mets on Monday versus the Nationals, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
Impact This will allow an extra day of rest for Justin Verlander, who is now instead on tap for Tuesday's series opener against the Rays. Peterson struggled in an emergency start this past Tuesday versus the Reds, yielding four earned runs on seven hits and two walks over just 3.1 innings.
MAY 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Early exit in emergency start Peterson (1-5) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.1 innings as the Mets fell 7-6 to the Reds. He struck out four.
Impact The southpaw was sent down to Triple-A Syracuse at the end of April, but Peterson was brought back up after just one minor-league start when Max Scherzer (neck) wasn't able to take his turn. Peterson failed to capitalize on his second chance and needed 87 pitches to record only 10 outs, although he did avoid serving up any homers for just the second time in seven big-league outings this season. Peterson could remain in the Mets' rotation for now if Scherzer isn't ready to return over the weekend, or if the team simply wants to give the whole rotation an extra day of rest, but his 7.68 ERA and 1.68 WHIP don't make a compelling case to stick around for the long term.
MAY 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Called up, starting Tuesday Peterson was called up from Triple-A Syracuse and will start Tuesday versus the Reds, Pat Ragazzo of SI.com reports.
Impact With Max Scherzer (neck) being scratched from his start Tuesday, Peterson will return to the big-league mound. Peterson has struggled to a 7.34 ERA and 1.57 WHIP with 36 strikeouts over 30.2 innings in six starts with New York this season. In a corresponding move that made room for the left-hander on the major-league roster, Jimmy Yacabonis (quad) was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday.
MAY 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Meeting up with NYM Peterson is meeting up with the Mets on Tuesday in Cincinnati, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports.
Impact Peterson was supposed to start for Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, but it sounds like he's going to be the backup plan for the Mets in case Max Scherzer (shoulder) isn't ready to take his scheduled turn Tuesday night against the Reds. There should be more clarity on the situation soon enough.
MAY 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Peterson was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday.
Impact Peterson has a strong 18.8 K-BB%, but it hasn't translated into strong run prevention. The southpaw had strong starts against the Marlins and Padres earlier in the year, but he gave up four or more runs in his other four starts. With Saturday's postponement and a potential postponement coming again Sunday against Atlanta, the Mets will have well-rested rotation options available early next week. Max Scherzer (suspension) and Justin Verlander (shoulder) will also return next week. John Curtiss was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.
APRIL 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Stuck with rain-aided loss Peterson (1-4) took the loss Friday as the Mets fell 4-0 to Atlanta, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six.
Impact For four innings the evening featured a pitchers' duel between two talented southpaws, but Atlanta got to Peterson in the fifth while New York's bats remained quiet against Max Fried, and they never got a chance to respond when the game was called after five frames due to rain. The long ball remains Peterson's Achilles heel this season -- Matt Olson's blast Friday was the eighth homer he's served up in 30.2 innings -- but his 36:10 K:BB offers hope he can turn things around if he hits his spots a little better. Peterson will take a 7.34 ERA and 1.57 WHIP into his next start, likely to come next week in Detroit.
APRIL 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles early in loss Peterson (1-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and one walk over five innings during a 7-4 loss to San Francisco. He struck out eight.
Impact Peterson allowed four runs in the first inning and two more in the second, but he was still able to get through five frames and struck out a season-high eight. The left-hander has given up at least five runs in three of his first five starts and currently sports a 7.36 ERA with a 30:9 K:BB through 25.2 innings.
