Placed on IL The Astros placed Matthews on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left knee inflammation, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Impact Matthews injured his knee while making a diving catch during Tuesday's game against Seattle. The 24-year-old had missed most of the second half due to an injury to the same knee, so the Astros will play it safe and send him back to the injured list, ending his season early. Lucas Spence was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Impact Matthews came up limping after making a diving catch in center field during the second inning of Tuesday's game, and he was eventually pulled in the sixth. The fact that he was able to remain in the game for a while after making the play is an encouraging sign, though the Astros will likely provide more information on his health in the near future.

Impact Matthews has missed the entire second half due to a left knee sprain, but he's now been cleared to return and aid the Astros in their push for a postseason appearance. The 24-year-old will almost certainly be limited to a bench role, however, as he owns a .582 OPS through 226 plate appearances this season and went just 1-for-24 with 12 strikeouts during his rehab assignment. Jorge Barrosa was DFA'd in a corresponding move.

Impact The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Ethan Pecko. Matthews has been sidelined since departing July 12 with a left knee sprain. He'd been targeting a return this month, but Matthews will now be required to spend a couple extra weeks on the injured list and isn't eligible to return until mid-September.

Matthews was able to make the relay throw into the infield and remained in the game while Houston recorded the final out of the frame, but he was pulled from the contest before his first turn in the batting order came up. Taylor Trammell pinch hit for Matthews and will presumably cover center field for the remainder of the contest. The Astros should provide further word on the nature of Matthews' injury later Sunday.
