Impact Matthews will get a chance to show off his skills in the majors after slashing .298/.401/.504 with four homers, 16 RBI, 24 runs scored and nine stolen bases across 31 games since the beginning of June. The 23-year-old second baseman has a good chance to start regularly at second base for the Astros while Jose Altuve moves back out to left field, providing aid for an outfield unit that has been decimated by injuries recently.

Impact Matthews suffered the injury on a slide. It's unfortunate timing, as he had been showing significant skills growth with Triple-A Sugar Land prior to the injury. Notably, he had maintained a .269/.398/.462 line across his last 23 games.

Impact Matthews hit for the cycle May 10 and all four of his home runs this year have come after April 15. He has also cut his strikeout rate after striking out 35.5 percent of the time in the first 14 games of the year. Matthews is the Astros' second baseman of the future, provided he makes enough contact at the highest level. He has a low chase rate (19.9 percent), but his 65.4 percent contact rate and 14 percent swinging-strike rate are poor marks.

Impact For the second time this season, Matthews has been shut down with a back issue, as he had previously missed most of May due to what the Astros had described as low back discomfort. The infielder returned to action for High-A Asheville on June 1 before moving up to Corpus Christi two and a half weeks later. Since getting promoted to Double-A, Matthews had slashed .225/.344/.441 with six home runs and 10 stolen bases across 131 plate appearances.
