Lands on injured list Matthews was placed on the minor-league seven-day injured list after suffering a concussion Thursday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Impact Matthews suffered the injury on a slide. It's unfortunate timing, as he had been showing significant skills growth with Triple-A Sugar Land prior to the injury. Notably, he had maintained a .269/.398/.462 line across his last 23 games.

Impact Matthews hit for the cycle May 10 and all four of his home runs this year have come after April 15. He has also cut his strikeout rate after striking out 35.5 percent of the time in the first 14 games of the year. Matthews is the Astros' second baseman of the future, provided he makes enough contact at the highest level. He has a low chase rate (19.9 percent), but his 65.4 percent contact rate and 14 percent swinging-strike rate are poor marks.

Reassigned to minors camp The Astros reassigned Matthews to minor-league camp Thursday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Impact One of the team's top prospects, Matthews went 3-for-16 with a triple at the plate this spring. Slated to turn 23 this weekend, Matthews finished last season at Triple-A Sugar Land and will head back there to begin the 2025 campaign.

Impact For the second time this season, Matthews has been shut down with a back issue, as he had previously missed most of May due to what the Astros had described as low back discomfort. The infielder returned to action for High-A Asheville on June 1 before moving up to Corpus Christi two and a half weeks later. Since getting promoted to Double-A, Matthews had slashed .225/.344/.441 with six home runs and 10 stolen bases across 131 plate appearances.
