INJURIES

Tough-luck loss Saturday Snell (1-5) allowed two runs on a hit and three walks while striking out six over six innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Dodgers.
Impact Snell was unlucky Saturday -- the only hit he surrendered was a two-run home run to Chris Taylor in the fourth inning. The Padres' offense mustered a mere one run on five hits and three walks. Snell's earned quality starts in his last two outings, but he's also given up at least one homer in six straight appearances. He's at a 4.89 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 39:21 K:BB through 35 innings over seven starts this season. The southpaw is lined up for a rematch with the Dodgers in Los Angeles next week.

Earns first win Snell (1-4) allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings Monday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Reds.
Impact Snell coughed up a two-run double to Stuart Fairchild in the third inning followed by Nick Senzel's solo shot in the fourth. It was the fifth straight game in which Snell gave up at least one home run. The 30-year-old lefty forced 17 whiffs, his highest total since recording 19 in his season debut. He picked up his first win and lowered his season ERA to 5.28 alongside a 33:18 K:BB through 29 frames. Snell is currently lined up to face the Dodgers at home this weekend.

Remains winless with loss to Cubs Snell (0-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and five walks over five innings against the Cubs. He struck out five.
Impact Snell once again was unable to pick up a win, but that had more to do with the lack of offense behind him then how he pitched against the Cubs on Wednesday. The southpaw allowed a two-run homer to Yan Gomes in the second inning, but Snell was able to keep Chicago off the board from that point on. Unfortunately for him and the Padres, the San Diego offense was unable to reach the scoreboard against Justin Steele and the Cubs' bullpen. Control was once again an issue for Snell, however, as he has walked at least three batters in four consecutive starts and issued 18 overall free passes in 23 innings.

Loses third game in four starts Snell (0-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings in a 8-1 loss against the Braves. He struck out five.
Impact Snell had his best outing of the young season, but the Padres' lack of run support led to him taking another loss. The southpaw gave up his lowest run and hit totals of the year, a welcome sight for fantasy managers. However, the eight-year veteran hasn't pitched more than five innings in a game this year, and has given up multiple runs in each start. The Seattle native will look to get back to his usual good form against the Diamondbacks in a few days.

Control issues Wednesday Snell (0-2) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks over five-plus innings as the Padres fell 5-2 to the Mets. He struck out five.
Impact The southpaw threw only 53 of 100 pitches for strikes, and after issuing free passes to Jeff McNeil and Tommy Pham to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, Snell got the hook. The 30-year-old has a 6.92 ERA and 16:10 K:BB through three starts and 13 innings to kick off the season, and he'll need to find the plate more often if he's going to trim down his ratios. Snell will try to get on track in his next outing, likely to come early next week at home against Atlanta.

Can't get out of fourth inning Snell pitched 3.2 innings against Atlanta on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two batters. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Snell gave up a single run in each of the first and third innings, but a Matt Carpenter three-run homer in the top of the fourth staked him to a 3-2 lead. The left-hander was unable to hold that advantage, however, as he allowed five batters to reach base -- the final three by walk -- in the bottom of the frame before being forced to exit. Control has long been an issue for Snell, and he's off to a poor start in that regard this season with five walks over his first eight innings. He's also given up seven earned runs, and though his strikeout potential is tantalizing, he's not going to be able to go very deep into games if he's unable to get the free passes under control.

Fans nine in Opening Day loss Snell (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Rockies, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out nine.
Impact Snell's season debut echoed a trend for him in recent campaigns -- he struck out plenty of batters but threw so many pitches (93) that he was unable to go deep into the game. To the left-hander's credit, he issued just one walk, and two of the three runs against him came after he departed the contest. Snell should be a great source of punchouts again this season as long as he stays healthy, but he hasn't posted an ERA better than 3.24 or a WHIP better than 1.20 since his Cy Young 2018 campaign.

Set for Opening Day start Snell will start Opening Day versus the Rockies on Thursday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact With Joe Musgrove (toe) and Yu Darvish both unavailable, Snell will get the nod against Colorado. The left-hander rounded back into form last season after a disappointing first campaign with San Diego in 2021, posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 32.0 percent strikeout rate in 128 innings last year.

Expected to start Opening Day Snell appears lined up to serve as the Opening Day starter for the Padres, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Joe Musgrove (toe) will miss at least the first week of the season and Yu Darvish is still in buildup mode following his run with Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic, so the Opening Day call figures to go to Snell. An official decision is expected Friday. Snell, 30, registered a 3.38 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 171:51 K:BB across 128 regular-season innings (24 starts) for San Diego in 2022.

MARCH 18, 2023 • SANDIEGOUNIONTRIBUNE.COM
Good results so far this spring Snell has pitched in two Cactus League contests for the Padres, allowing three runs on four hits while posting a 6:2 K:BB over seven innings.
Impact Snell has allowed just six baserunners through his first seven innings, but he's been stung by two long balls against him. Homers weren't a big problem for the lefty last season -- he gave up 11 over 128 frames -- so there's no reason to draw any implications from the small spring sample. Snell historically doesn't go deep into games and tends to issue too many walks, but he can pile up strikeouts and pitched well enough last season (3.38 ERA, 2.79 FIP, 1.20 WHIP) to justify a selection in the first third of fantasy drafts.
