Excellent against former team Snell (3-6) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out 12 over six shutout innings to earn the win Saturday over the Rays.

Impact Snell's excellent stretch continued for a fifth straight start, and this one came against his old team. Over his last 30 innings, the southpaw has allowed just two runs while posting a 45:13 K:BB. He's had 12 strikeouts in each of his last two starts, and he's enjoying some of his best pitching in years. Saturday's gem lowered his ERA to 3.48 with a 1.29 WHIP and 93:40 K:BB through 75 innings over 14 starts. Snell's next outing is projected to be on the road in San Francisco next week.

Cleared for next start Snell (ankle) is listed as the Padres' probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the Rays at Petco Park.

Impact Snell contended with swelling in his left ankle after being struck by a comebacker during his most recent start Sunday in Colorado, but the injury nor pitching at Coors Field prevented him from delivering his best outing of the season. The veteran southpaw set season highs in both innings pitched (seven) and strikeouts (12) while allowing one run on just three hits and one walk. After a middling start to the season, Snell has been rolling over his last four turns through the rotation, pitching to a 0.75 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 33:10 K:BB in 24 innings over that stretch. With the swollen ankle apparently not proving to be too bothersome during his between-starts bullpen session, Snell looks like he'll face no restrictions Saturday while facing off against his former team for the first time.

Dealing with swelling in ankle Snell was removed from Sunday's game against the Rockies due to swelling in his ankle, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Impact Snell was hit by a comebacker on his left ankle in the bottom of the seventh inning and initially remained in the game, but he was replaced in the bottom of the eighth due to swelling. However, the southpaw underwent X-rays that came back negative and said after the game that he's fine. He allowed a run on three hits and no walks while striking out 12 in seven innings prior to his removal, and it seems likely that he'll be able to make his next turn through the rotation.

Impact Snell didn't resolve his season-long command issues -- he handed out multiple free passes for the sixth straight outing -- but he yielded just two hits, both of which were singles. The left-hander also racked up 17 whiffs and fell one shy of his season high with eight strikeouts. Snell appears to be finding his groove, as he has posted back-to-back scoreless starts, during which he has surrendered just five hits and tallied 15 strikeouts over 12 innings. His ERA was up to 5.40 through May 19, but with three strong outings since then, it now stands at a much more respectable 4.06.

Impact Snell wasn't at his best Thursday, but he was able to work through traffic, holding the Nats to one first-inning run while striking out six. It's certainly a step in the right direction for Snell after he allowed six runs in a loss to Boston in his previous outing. Still, it's been a tough start to the year for the left-hander -- he's 1-6 with a 5.04 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 54:31 K:BB through 10 starts (50 innings).
