Ticketed for long relief Voth appears set to open the season in a long relief role.

Impact The right-hander lost out on his bid for the No. 5 starter role, but he should still begin the season in the majors. Voth has had an unimpressive spring, posting a 5.40 ERA and 9:5 K:BB over 11.2 innings, but with Jon Lester (neck) still not fully stretched out, Joe Ross potentially having his workload monitored after opting out of 2020, and Stephen Strasburg and Max Scherzer holding more injury risk than other pitchers, there could be plenty of long-relief work available in the early part of the season.

Impact The right-hander is currently battling Joe Ross and Erick Fedde for the No. 5 job, but with Jon Lester (thyroid surgery) now questionable for Opening Day another spot could open up, and given the overall state of the team's veteran and injury-prone top of the rotation, all three could wind up getting turns in the early part of the season. The Nats also only have two scheduled off days over the first three weeks, giving them extra incentive to take it easy on the likes of Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. Voth made 11 starts in 2020, but his 6.34 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over 49.2 innings limit him to being a deep-league streaming option at best even if he does break camp in the rotation.

Impact While it wasn't the cleanest outing for Voth, the Nationals scored 15 runs, including 12 in the first three innings, to give him plenty of support. The 28-year-old righty allowed two homers, one to Pete Alonso and another to Guillermo Heredia, in the first two frames. Voth finishes the 2020 campaign with a 6.34 ERA and 44:18 K:BB over 49.2 innings.

Impact Things were looking great for Voth in the early parts of Thursday's outing. The right-hander retired the first nine batters he faced, while the Nats spotted him a 5-0 lead. Unfortunately, Voth seemed to lose his command in the fourth, as he walked two and allowed a two-run homer to Freddie Freeman. He struck out Nick Markakis to begin the fifth but was pulled a batter later after hitting Tyler Flowers. The 28-year-old was charged with one more run when Ronald Acuna took Wander Suero deep for a two-run homer. Voth will once again try for his first win when he takes the ball Wednesday against the Rays.
