Impact Voth was tabbed to make a spot start with Stephen Strasburg landing on the injured list with a neck injury. The right-hander was removed in the third inning after a Vince Velasquez fastball hit him in the face during his at-bat. Manager Davey Martinez said that Voth will stay in Philadelphia on Sunday night to get his nose reset. It's unclear how the nose issue will affect his availability going forward and whether or not he'll require an IL stint.

Impact Summoned from the bullpen to make a spot start in place of Stephen Strasburg (neck), Voth cruised struck out two over a perfect two innings and appeared poised to come back out for a third frame. He ultimately didn't get the opportunity after taking a 90 mile-per-hour Velasquez offering to the front of his helmet, with the ball then deflecting off the left side of his face. While sporting a bloody nose, Voth was able to walk off the field under his own power, but he'll likely be subject to X-rays and concussion tests before the Nationals provide an updated diagnosis of his injury.

Draws start in bullpen game Manager Dave Martinez said Voth will start Sunday's game against the Phillies, which the Nationals will treat as a bullpen day, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact After the Nationals elected to send Erick Fedde (COVID-19 injured list) out for a minor-league rehab start Saturday, Voth became the logical choice to pick up a spot start in place of Stephen Strasburg (neck), who was moved back to the IL a few days ago. After Strasburg recorded just four outs in his start June 1 before exiting with the neck strain, Voth stepped in to cover a season-high three innings of long relief. The Nationals apparently don't plan to stretch Voth out much further than that for Sunday's start, as Martinez said the right-hander will likely cover 2-to-3 innings before giving way to the bullpen, according to Maria Torres of The Athletic.

Secures win Tuesday Voth (2-0) picked up the win in Tuesday's 11-6 victory over Atlanta, giving up two runs on one hit and one walk over three innings of relief. He struck out three.
Impact After Stephen Strasburg (neck) lasted only 1.1 innings before being forced from the game, Voth was called in and pitched well until serving up a two-run shot to Ronald Acuna in the fifth. If Strasburg once again misses time, Erick Fedde (COVID-19) would be the likely replacement in the rotation, with Voth remaining in his long relief role -- especially considering he's got a 5.25 ERA and has been tagged for five homers over his last 12 innings.

Impact Joe Ross got the start Wednesday night and blanked the Reds over four innings, and Voth picked up where Ross left off when the game was resumed Thursday afternoon. The 28-year-old hasn't gotten a chance to start yet this season but has been solid in long relief, posting a 2.28 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB over 16 appearances and 23.2 innings.

What Nationals reliever Daniel Hudson can tell us about new reliever Austin Voth Hudson became a full-time reliever at 28 years old. Right now, Voth is following that timeline.
MAY 15, 2021 • WASHINGTONPOST.COM
Strong relief outing Sunday Voth gave up one hit and struck out four over three scoreless innings of relief in Sunday's loss to the Mets.
Impact The Nats were already down 4-0 when Voth entered the game with a runner on base and nobody out in the fifth inning, but the right-hander turned in his best outing of the season to prevent things from getting worse. Voth has a 2.08 ERA and 10:4 K:BB through 8.2 innings, but as long as he's working low-leverage situations in long relief, his fantasy value will be minimal.

Little work to begin year Voth has a 1.93 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 4:3 K:BB through 4.2 innings over four appearances to begin the season.
Impact The right-hander has gotten anywhere from two outs to six outs in his appearances, none of which have come in high-leverage situations, and he has yet to record a hold, save or decision of any kind. Voth doesn't appear to be an option for spot starts either, giving him few paths to fantasy value.
APRIL 23, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Ticketed for long relief Voth appears set to open the season in a long relief role.
Impact The right-hander lost out on his bid for the No. 5 starter role, but he should still begin the season in the majors. Voth has had an unimpressive spring, posting a 5.40 ERA and 9:5 K:BB over 11.2 innings, but with Jon Lester (neck) still not fully stretched out, Joe Ross potentially having his workload monitored after opting out of 2020, and Stephen Strasburg and Max Scherzer holding more injury risk than other pitchers, there could be plenty of long-relief work available in the early part of the season.

Nats mulling six-man rotation Voth would be an option for the final spot if the Nationals open the season with a six-man rotation, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact The right-hander is currently battling Joe Ross and Erick Fedde for the No. 5 job, but with Jon Lester (thyroid surgery) now questionable for Opening Day another spot could open up, and given the overall state of the team's veteran and injury-prone top of the rotation, all three could wind up getting turns in the early part of the season. The Nats also only have two scheduled off days over the first three weeks, giving them extra incentive to take it easy on the likes of Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. Voth made 11 starts in 2020, but his 6.34 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over 49.2 innings limit him to being a deep-league streaming option at best even if he does break camp in the rotation.

Analysis | How Jim Hickey and his focus on the change-up could help the Nationals’ pitching staff Joe Ross, Erick Fedde and Austin Voth could all used an improved change-up. Their new pitching coach could be keen on making that happen.
NOVEMBER 16, 2020 • WASHINGTONPOST.COM
Allows four runs in win Voth (2-5) yielded four runs on nine hits over five innings Sunday, striking out four and earning the win over the Mets.
Impact While it wasn't the cleanest outing for Voth, the Nationals scored 15 runs, including 12 in the first three innings, to give him plenty of support. The 28-year-old righty allowed two homers, one to Pete Alonso and another to Guillermo Heredia, in the first two frames. Voth finishes the 2020 campaign with a 6.34 ERA and 44:18 K:BB over 49.2 innings.
