INJURIES

Cruises to first win of season Civale (1-0) picked up the win Friday over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on four hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out six.
Impact A George Springer solo shot in the third innings accounted for the only damage off Civale. The 28-year-old right-hander tossed 53 of 86 pitches for strikes but only generated five swinging strikes, a reminder that he's never delivered big strikeouts numbers in his career over a prolonged stretch. Civale did post a 58:11 K:BB over 45.1 innings after joining the Rays last season from the Guardians, but that came with a 5.36 ERA thanks to seven homers allowed, and a 1.37 WHIP.

Abbreviated outing Friday Civale (7-5) took the loss Friday as the Rays were routed 11-4 by the Blue Jays, giving up one run on two hits and two walks over 1.2 innings. He struck out three.
Impact With Tampa Bay already locked into the top wild-card spot in the American League and likely to face Toronto to begin the playoffs next week, manager Kevin Cash elected not to give the opposition a good look at any of the starting pitchers the Rays might be using. Civale got the hook after 40 pitches (21 strikes), while Zack Littell (35 pitches) and Taj Bradley (21 pitches) also saw action out of the bullpen. All three right-handers figure to be available when the Wild-Card Round begins Tuesday. Civale finishes the regular season with a 3.46 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 116:33 K:BB through 122.1 innings split between Tampa and Cleveland, but his ratios since being acquired by the Rays (5.36 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 45.1 IP) are far less impressive.

Lined up for Friday Civale (illness) is scheduled to start Friday's series opener versus the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Civale needed a couple extra days of rest between starts after coming down with an illness earlier this week. The 28-year-old has registered a 5.36 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 55:9 K:BB in 43.2 innings (nine starts) for the Rays since being acquired from the Guardians just before the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

Next start postponed Rays manager Kevin Cash said Civale's next start will be pushed back since Civale is feeling ill, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Civale was originally slated to pitch Tuesday against Boston, but he will instead make his next start during the final series of the season versus Toronto. Zach Eflin and Tyler Glasnow will shift up in the rotation and start Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Lasts just three frames in loss Civale (7-4) took the loss against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over three innings.
Impact Civale fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and gave up four more runs in the second. Though he bounced back to strike out three batters in a scoreless third, the right-hander wasn't allowed to return for the fourth. This was Civale's shortest outing of the campaign and snapped his streak of seven straight starts of at least five frames. One positive takeaway is that Civale continued his recent strikeout binge -- he's compiled 44 punchouts over his past 28.1 frames covering six starts.
SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Eight punchouts in no-decision Civale did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over five innings against the Orioles. He struck out eight.
Impact After surrendering solo home runs in the second and fourth frames, Civale escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth, limiting the damage to just one run in the inning. The 28-year-old hasn't thrown more than 5.1 innings in any of his last five starts and despite an impressive 13.1 K/9, he has posted a 5.33 ERA across 25.1 innings during that stretch, causing his season-long ERA to rise above three for the first time since early July. He will likely take the mound next in an upcoming home matchup with the Angels.

Four runs in no-decision Civale did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over five innings against the Mariners. He struck out three.
Impact The right-hander struggled right out of the gate Saturday, loading the bases before recording any outs and surrendering three runs in the first frame followed by a solo shot to Julio Rodriguez in the second. Civale then settled in, holding Seattle scoreless over his final three innings of work and avoided taking the loss thanks to Tampa Bay's late rally. The 28-year-old hadn't allowed more than three runs in any of his 12 starts since June 25, accumulating a 5-1 record with a 2.51 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a solid 62:12 K:BB across 68 innings during that stretch. Civale currently lines up for a tough road matchup against the Orioles next week.
SEPTEMBER 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fans 12 in no-decision Civale allowed three runs on two hits and three walks over 5.1 innings in Monday's loss to Boston. He struck out 12 and did not factor in the decision.
Impact Civale gave up just one run through five frames but was charged with two more after Chris Devenski allowed a three-run shot to Triston Casas in the sixth innings. Civale's 12-strikeout performance set a new career high and marked his first double-digit strikeout performance since last season. He's allowed three or fewer runs in each of his first six appearances with the Rays, posting a 3.82 ERA and a 37:5 K:BB during that stretch. Civale is currently in line for a home matchup with the Mariners this weekend.

Solid outing in win Civale (7-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings against Miami. He struck out five without issuing a walk.
Impact Civale found himself in a bases-loaded jam in the first inning but managed to escape the frame, limiting the damage to just one run. The 28-year old hurler then gave up a solo homer to Jazz Chisholm in the third and would eventually exit the game down 2-1 after five. Luckily, Tampa Bay's bats came alive in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 4-2 lead and secure Civale his second win since joining the Rays at the trade deadline. In his nine second-half starts, the righty now owns a 2.72 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 39:8 K:BB across 49.2 innings. He is tentatively slated to face the Red Sox at home early next week.

Impact It was Civale's most dominant performance since joining Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, as he generated an eye-popping 35 called or swinging strikes on only 80 pitches. Despite that effort, he was in line for his fourth loss of the year after putting the first two batters aboard in the top of the sixth inning and watching both come around to score after he'd left the mound, but a late rally by the Rays got the right-hander off the hook. Civale has a 3.54 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 20:2 K:BB through 20.1 innings in August, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is likely to come early next week in Miami.

Blanks San Francisco in win Civale (6-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing five hits and a walk over six scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out five.
Impact It was the first win for Civale since he was traded from Cleveland at the deadline. He's now 1-1 through his first three starts with Tampa while allowing five runs over 15.1 innings. Overall, Civale's ERA is down to 2.44 with a 1.12 WHIP and 69:24 K:BB across 16 starts (92.1 innings) between the Rays and Guardians. He's currently lined up for a favorable home matchup with the Rockies in his next outing.

Goes five in no-decision Civale yielded two runs on seven hits and a walk over five frames Friday, taking a no-decision in a 9-8 win over the Guardians. He struck out two.
Impact It wasn't a pretty outing, with Civale tying his season low with just two strikeouts and managing only three swinging strikes on 91 pitches. A lot of the contact was soft, though, with his former team averaging just a 78.5 mph exit velocity off the right-hander. Still, while Civale managed to limit the damage in this one, his first two starts for the Rays have been rather disappointing given the favorable matchups versus the Tigers and Guardians.

Takes loss in Rays debut Civale (5-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings against Detroit while striking out four.
Impact Civale allowed leadoff singles in each of the first four innings, which led to one run coming across for Detroit in the second, followed by two more in the fourth. The newly-acquired right-hander would then be relieved by Kevin Kelly in the fifth after surrendering a one-out double to Kerry Carpenter, marking the first time that Civale's failed to make it through at least five innings since June 14. He had given up two or fewer runs in six straight starts coming in while the nine hits he allowed Saturday matched his season high.
