Roughed up in return
Civale (5-3) allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out two over three-plus innings to take the loss versus the Pirates on Wednesday.
Impact
Civale missed about three weeks due to right shoulder tendinitis. He threw 46 of 71 pitches for strikes, but it was performance as much as workload that caused his early exit. He's allowed 18 runs over 12 innings across his last three starts in the majors. Civale now has a 4.91 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 41:19 K:BB over 58.2 innings through 12 starts this season. His next start is projected to be on the road in San Francisco, which is about as favorable a matchup as a struggling pitcher can ask for, though Civale's recent performance means he'll still carry some risk.

Activated ahead of start
The Athletics reinstated Civale (shoulder) from the injured list ahead of his start Wednesday against the Pirates.
Impact
Civale was brilliant during his rehab outing at Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, striking out seven batters without allowing a man to reach base in 4.1 innings. He now has the green light to rejoin the Athletics' rotation, though he will be making his return against a Pirates offense that's posted a .764 OPS since the beginning of June. The 31-year-old righty is also likely to have his workload limited Wednesday after tossing just 56 pitches during his appearance in the minors. Luis Morales was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Likely back from IL on Wednesday
Civale (shoulder) is expected to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's game against the Pirates in Sacramento, Jason Burke of Roundtable.io reports.
Impact
Civale has been on the shelf since May 26 due to right shoulder tendinitis, but he proved he was ready for a return to the big leagues after a stellar showing in his lone rehab appearance Thursday with Triple-A Las Vegas. The veteran right-hander struck out seven over 4.1 perfect innings while spotting 38 of his 56 pitches for strikes. He could be operating with a light restriction with his pitch count Wednesday but should be capable of handling a normal workload in his subsequent starts.

Slated for rehab outing Thursday
Civale (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance Thursday with Triple-A Las Vegas, MLB.com reports.
Impact
Civale has been shelved since May 26 with right shoulder tendinitis and seems to be progressing well in his recovery. After beginning a throwing progression June 1, the right-hander is now set to take the next step and jump into game action. Should Civale come out of Thursday's outing feeling healthy, a return to the Athletics' rotation for his next start seems likely. Prior to hitting the injured list, he posted a 5-2 record with a 4.20 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB across 55.2 innings (11 starts).

Starts throwing again
Civale (shoulder) began throwing progression Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Civale is throwing again just under a week after landing on the injured list due to right shoulder tendinitis. The Athletics aren't yet putting a timeline on his return, so Civale would appear to be unlikely to be activated when first eligible June 10. A clearer target for Civale's return should become available once he reaches the point in his throwing program that he's facing hitters.
