Spotted on practice field
Stone (lower leg) was spotted on the field with the team to open spring practice Wednesday but has been working more on his own, Jacob Richman of LoneStarLive.com reports.
Impact
Stone broke his fibula in late November but appears to be recovering well and seems likely to be ready to roll by the time the 2024 campaign rolls around. That said, the senior figures to face limitations in spring ball as he continues his road to recovery. Prior to his injury last season, Stone completed 206 of his 344 pass attempts for 3,197 yards and a 28:6 TD:INT ratio, and the to-be junior should garner heavy interest in fantasy drafts again next season.

Out for remainder of 2023 season
Stone is out for the remainder of SMU's 2023 season due to a broken fibula, Guerry Smith of The New Orleans Advocate reports.
Impact
Stone was carted off SMU's game Saturday against Navy, and head coach Rhett Lashlee confirmed the worst for his injured quarterback. He will sit out the 2023 AAC Championship Game with a broken fibula, which may affect his availability during the 2024 offseason and regular season as well. Stone broke out in 2023, finishing the year with 206 completions for 3,204 yards and a 28:6 TD:INT ratio. On the ground, he also completed 62 carries for 198 yards and four touchdowns, totaling more than 30 TDs overall in the process. As for the AAC Championship Game against Tulane on Saturday, Kevin Jennings will be SMU's starting quarterback.

Productive in Saturday's win
Stone completed 15 of 23 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 38-34 win over Memphis. He also had eight rushes for 10 yards with one touchdown.
Impact
Stone accounted for three touchdowns in Saturday's win, the fifth time in his last six games he has done so. It was a massive win for Stone and the Mustangs as now the team just needs to defeat Navy Saturday in the regular season finale to secure a spot in the AAC Championship Game. The Midshipmen have given up just 11 points per game in their last five games (including two shutouts) so it will not be a cakewalk for Stone and the offense.

Electric in blowout win
Stone completed 15 of 20 passes for 371 yards and three touchdowns during Saturday's 69-10 win over Tulsa.
Impact
Stone had his best outing of the season Saturday, tossing three touchdown passes and setting a season-high in passing yards despite tying a season-low in pass attempts. He threw a touchdown in the first minute of the game, a 74-yarder to Romello Brinson, then threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to RJ Maryland in the second quarter. He did not attempt a rush for the first time this season and was taken out in the second quarter after giving his team a 52-3 lead.

Three total TDs in win
Stone was 23-for-36 passing for 300 yards and two touchdowns during Friday's 55-0 victory against Temple. He also had five rushes for 25 yards with one touchdown.
Impact
Stone played very well in Friday's 55-point rout of Temple as he accounted for three touchdowns and zero turnovers for the second consecutive game. In addtion to his second 300-yard passing game, he had his best rushing game, tying his season high with 25 rushing yards and scoring his second rushing touchdown of the season. Next up he faces a Tulsa defense which just allowed 42 points to Rice, so Stone will look to keep his hot streak alive Saturday.

Healthy for spring
Stone (collarbone) will be healthy for spring football, according to 247Sports.com.
Impact
SMU's head coach Rhett Lashlee said Stone is "fully healthy" now, his first time such since before his collarbone was fractured. It is expected to be Stone's first spring as a starter, a spot that was left open for him after Tanner Mordecai announced his transfer to Wisconsin just before 2023.

Set to back up Mordecai
Stone will open the season as Tanner Mordecai's backup, Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact
SMU has ended its quarterback competition for the time being as the season approaches and the new coaching staff will stick with Mordecai behind center. Coach Rhett Lashlee stated that Stone will still have a role so he could see more series than most backups, but that likely won't be enough to put him on the fantasy radar as long as Mordecai is performing at a high level.

QB competition continuing into fall
Stone will continue to challenge Tanner Mordecai for the starting quarterback job in fall camp, Billy Embody of On3.com reports.
Impact
Stone appears to still be in the mix to win the starting job as a redshirt freshman despite Tanner Mordecai's impressive 2021 campaign under center. The fact that Mordecai has just one season left and Stone as plenty more ahead may work against Stone, but he appears set to get a look in fall camp before a final decision is made.

Stone will be Tanner Mordecai's backup to begin the 2021 season, Chris Vannini of The Athletic reports.
