Officially QB1 Stone has been announced as the starting quarterback for Northwestern on Wednesday, per Inside NU.

Impact Stone will lead the Wildcats' offense to begin the 2025 campaign after transferring in earlier this year. The graduate quarterback spent the previous four seasons at SMU, primarily serving as a backup, and will now finally have the opportunity to take the reins as a starter.

All signs point to QB1 role Stone appears essentially locked into the top quarterback spot at Northwestern, per Inside NU.

Impact Stone, who transferred to Northwestern after getting usurped by Kevin Jennings at SMU last fall, has reportedly all but locked down the starting quarterback spot. "I anticipate us all being on the same page of who our starting quarterback is very early in fall camp," Wildcats' head coach David Braun said, reportedly in jest. Stone ran with the first team offense repeatedly and has been elected as a captain. Jack Lausch remains on the roster, but the former Mustang is already running away with the job.

He had been outpaced by Jennings for consecutive games, attempting less than double-digit passes during Weeks 1 and 2. The surprising part is Stone's steep decline, having broken out with 3,197 passing yards and a 28:6 TD:INT ratio during his 2023 season.

Head coach Rhett Lashlee clearly likes both signal callers, but Jennings' athleticism is getting him on the field perhaps more than anticipated. Still, Stone remains the token "starter" for the Mustangs, although, as with last week, that may mean very little.

Jennings' simply offers more as an athlete, as demonstrated by his 54 yards rushing and rushing touchdown. Stone should still play in each game for the time being, but he appears to be in legitimate danger of losing the full-time starting role.

Up-and-down performance in win Stone completed 17 of 30 passes for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Saturday's 29-24 victory versus Nevada. He also had five rushes for 35 yards.

Impact Stone and the SMU offense carried lofty expectations into the 2023 season, but it took the Mustangs a while to get going in Reno. Stone threw an interception on the first drive of the game trying to take a deep shot, and was pulled after several fruitless series in favor of Kevin Jennings. Stone would ultimately return, and eventually threw the game-winning touchdown pass to RJ Maryland on a gorgeous deep ball. Still, it wasn't the most inspiring performance from the gunslinger, and head coach Rhett Lashlee demonstrated he has no issue playing Jennings if Stone struggles. Ultimately, Stone should remain the starter moving forward, but continued rocky performances will have Jennings nipping at his heels.

Impact A broken fibula prematurely ended Stone's 2023 season, and he spent pretty much all of the offseason to recover from his injury. Fortunately for him, he will begin the Mustangs' 2024 season like he ended their 2023 campaign, as starting quarterback. Stone logged 206 completions for 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns that year. He finished 2023 with more than 32 TDs by recording four of them with his feet. Having an excellent season under his belt, Stone has expectations, so he is expected to be one of college football's best quarterbacks during 2024.

Impact Stone was previously cleared to resume practice in April, but it's an encouraging thing to hear after the 6-foot-1 quarterback suffered a season-ending broken fibula against Navy last season. The redshirt junior was having a career season in 2023 prior to his injury, putting up 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns to just six interceptions before going down. Stone will be hoping to use his return season to put his team in position to make a splash in their inaugural season in the ACC.
