Texas A&M QB Max Johnson out With Broken Bone in Hand, per Report
The Aggies received bad news as they prepare for No. 1 Alabama on Saturday.

Dealing with broken hand
Johnson has a broken bone in his right hand that could force him to miss the remainder of the season, Ian Fitzsimmons of ESPN reports.
Impact
Johnson appears to have suffered a fracture in his throwing hand during last week's loss to Mississippi State, likely leaving him sidelined for the remainder of the season. The junior quarterback completed 40 of 67 passes for 494 yards and three touchdowns as the Aggies' starting quarterback the past three weeks. With Johnson out, Haynes King should step back in under center for Saturday's difficult road matchup against Alabama.

Labeled day-to-day
Johnson (hand) is day-to-day according to coach Jimbo Fisher, TexAgs.com reports.
Impact
Johnson banged his hand up during last week's loss to Mississippi State. The team will monitor his progress throughout the week and decided if he will be able to play on Saturday against Alabama. Haynes King would be the next man up if Johnson is unable to suit up.

Pedestrian in loss
Johnson completed 19-of-26 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown Saturday at Mississippi State.
Impact
Johnson was unable to keep pace with the high-octane Bulldog passing attack. That being said, Haynes King got some reps but threw two interceptions. Neither quarterback is a recommended option at Alabama next weekend.

Manages game in win
Johnson completed 11-of-21 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns Saturday against Arkansas, while also rushing for 39 yards in the 23-21 win.
Impact
Johnson is 2-0 as a starter for the Aggies, though his numbers have been rather mediocre. The LSU transfer has passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns in those two contests. He could see some additional opportunities at Mississippi State next weekend, though, as the Bulldogs are averaging 47 points over the last two contests in a game that could end up as a shootout.

Named QB1
Johnson will be the starting quarterback for Saturday's game against Miami, Grant Gaspard of The Battalion reports.
Impact
Johnson will get his first opportunity to start for the Aggies on Saturday after transferring over from LSU in the offseason. The third-year quarterback took part in a competition with Haynes King during fall camp and ultimately fell short. Haynes struggled mightily in the Week 2 defeat to Appalachian State, opening the door for Johnson to run away with the top job if he plays well.

Positioned for QB battle
Coach Jimbo Fisher said Thursday that Johnson will compete with Haynes King and Conner Weigman for the starting role at quarterback, Zach Taylor of WTAW 1620 Radio reports.
Impact
Johnson transferred from LSU to Texas A&M and in December, and it's not much of a surprise he's immediately in the starting mix. He completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,815 yards with 27 touchdowns and six interceptions for the Tigers last season, so he should be the favorite to open 2022 under center for the Aggies. However, King, who began last season as the starter before getting hurt, and Weigman, a four-star freshman, remain in the picture for now.

Three touchdowns in opening loss
Johnson completed 26-of-46 passes for 330 yards, three touchdowns and one interception Saturday at UCLA.
Impact
Johnson picked up right where he left off a season ago, tossing three touchdowns for the third-straight game. It was also his second-straight outing over the 300-yard mark. It looks like the Tigers defense may struggle this season, which could a be a recipe for big passing numbers and involvement in shootouts. A matchup versus lowly McNeese State is up next.

Set to start for Tigers
Johnson is now in line to start for the Tigers following news of Myles Brennan (arm) undergoing surgery, Wilson Alexander of The Advocate reports.
Impact
Johnson split reps with Brennan in the spring and was expected to compete for the starting job this fall, but Brennan's injury clears the path for Johnson to open the season as the Tigers' starter. The southpaw completed 58.7 percent of his pass attempts over six games last year, compiling an 8:1 TD ratio to go along with 1,069 passing yards in addition to his 119 rushing yards and pair of scores. He takes over a passing attack with some star power at the top in Kayshon Boutte and plenty of talent behind him.

Splitting first-team reps
Johnson has been receiving the first snaps through the opening weeks of LSU's spring practices, Brooks Kubena of The Advocate reports.
Impact
Though Myles Brennan and TJ Finley are still in the mix and getting some first-team reps, it's noteworthy that Johnson has been first in line to get things started this spring. Johnson notably ended the season by delivering a pair of memorable victories over Florida and Mississippi. "This is going to be an ongoing thing. We've got to let it go throughout camp. All our guys are doing well right now," coach Ed Orgeron said. Look for this competition to continue into the summer, but Johnson and the experienced Brennan might be the top two candidates all things considered.
