Iffy in first start of 2025 Johnson was 26-for-42 passing for 213 yards during Saturday's 38-10 defeat versus Clemson. He also had five rushes for 10 yards.
Impact Johnson drew the start for the injured Gio Lopez, and had a day that was absolutely nothing to write home about as the Tar Heels got dismantled by Clemson. Johnson didn't turn the ball over, but he also didn't find the end zone and averaged just 5.1 yards per attempt. Still, this was arguably a better outing than any Lopez has put together in 2025 -- North Carolina might have a quarterback controversy on its hands.

Impact Johnson stepped in during the Tar Heels' loss to UCF with starter Gio Lopez knocked out of the game due to injury. With the latter looking less and less likely to play, Johnson looks like the starting gunslinger for Saturday. In Week 4 against the Knights, he completed 11-of-19 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Decent in relief of Lopez Johnson completed 11 of 19 passes for 67 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 34-9 loss versus UCF.
Impact Johnson at the very least found the end zone and didn't turn the ball over, something starter Gio Lopez can't say. The latter was knocked out of the game with an injury, and while it was reported to not be season-ending, it sounds as if Johnson could be in line to start for the foreseeable future.
