Eligibility denied by NCAA
Smith's eligibility waiver was denied by the NCAA, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Impact
Smith was fighting for a fifth year of eligibility, but the forward won't be granted one by the NCAA after one season at Texas Tech, two seasons at Oklahoma State and his senior year at SMU. Smith's best season came in 2024-2025 with the Mustangs, where he averaged 8.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks.

Lands at K-State
Smith will transfer to Kansas State, Joe Tipton of On3.com reports.
Impact
Smith plans to redshirt this season and play for the Wildcats in 2025-2026. The former Memphis guard didn't see the court with the Tigers, and now has a new home for what should be his final season of college basketball. In 2023-2024 with SMU, Smith 8.2 points and 5.4 rebounds across 33 games with 13 starts.

Enters portal
Smith will enter the transfer portal, per On3.com.
Impact
Smith's status with Memphis was murky for the past few weeks, as it was unclear if the forward was even on the roster. Most recently, he was deemed out of the Tigers' final exhibition game with a knee injury, but that appeared to be the last straw. Smith will now seek his fifth program as he puts his name in the portal at the onset of the 2024-2025 season.

Out in exhibition vs. Alabama
Smith (knee) won't play in Memphis' exhibition against Alabama, Jason Munz of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.
Impact
Smith is being held out of the contest reportedly as a "precautionary" measure. After some murkiness about Smith's status on the Memphis roster, it appears the forward is firmly on the team, but he won't play in the Tigers' final scrimmage of the preseason. Smith's ankle injury doesn't sound all that serious given the "precautionary" nature of his absence, but his status for Memphis' opener on Nov. 4 against Missouri is in doubt.

Returns to practice Tuesday
Smith (not injury related) returned to practice Tuesday, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Impact
According to Hitmen Hoops, Smith informed Memphis' head coach Penny Hardaway of his decision to step away from the team program. But fast-forward two days later, and the redshirt senior is back to practicing with Memphis. Smith's current status is a little murky in terms of whether he will stay at or leave. However, the Tigers have another exhibition game scheduled for Oct. 28 at Alabama. Perhaps that matchup can provide some much-needed clarity on Smith's overall availability.

Hands healthy for game
Smith (hand) participated in Memphis' exhibition game Tuesday against North Carolina, according to Parth Upadhyaya of The Daily Memphian.
Impact
Going into October, Smith was dealing with a hand injury. But only in the middle of this month, Smith is already back to being healthy, even though him not being part of Memphis' starting five indicates he may have been eased into action. Either that or the Tigers' head coach Penny Hardaway prefers to start Nicholas Jourdain and Dain Dainja. Smith does make at least a decent case to be part of Memphis' starting frontcourt, with his SMU starter averages of 9.2 points and 4.5 rebounds backing him up.

Suffering from hand injury
Smith is suffering from a hand injury, according to Jason Munz of The Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Impact
Unfortunately for Smith, he will begin Memphis' preseason camp on shaky footing, with a hand injury that may take him out of at least some action. Ideally for him, that will not be the case, but Memphis' preseason games can help in that matter. Up next for the 2024-25 Tigers is an exhibition game scheduled for Oct. 15 against North Carolina.

Ends season on strong note
Smith registered five points (2-4 FG, 1-3 FT), 10 rebounds, one block and two steals over 28 minutes during Tuesday's 65-59 OT loss to North Texas.
Impact
Smith started his sixth game in a row to end his 2022-23 junior campaign. The 6-foot-9 Texas Tech transfer also averaged 8.2 points and 9.7 rebounds while playing 26.7 minutes per game. Smith opened the season as a reserve player in Oklahoma State's deep frontcourt, though his strong production to end the season is a solid sign for his role heading into the 2023-24 season.

Logs second straight double-double
Smith ended Sunday's 71-60 victory over Eastern Washington with 11 points (5-7 FG, 1-2 FT), 10 rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in 32 minutes.
Impact
Smith recorded his second consecutive double-double after failing to do all season leading up to the start of the NIT. The 6-foot-9 junior has moved up into the starting lineup alongside Moussa Cisse, as Kalib Boone and Woody Newton were conversely downgraded into bench roles. Over these five contests, Smith is averaging 8.8 points and 9.6 rebounds while playing 26.4 minutes per game -- all of which are markedly higher than his season averages. He's also shooting 54.5 percent from the field during this span, making him a very solid fantasy option to invest in so long as Oklahoma State survives in the NIT.

Scores 11 points in bigger role
Smith ended Saturday's 71-68 victory over Texas Tech with 11 points (4-4 FG, 3-4 FT), five rebounds, one assist and one block in 25 minutes.
Impact
Smith logged his first start since the Jan. 14 loss to Baylor. As a result, the 6-foot-9 junior scored in double figures for the first time since mid-December while also seeing a slight increase in his production as a rebounder. Smith ultimately finished the 2022-23 campaign averaging 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds while playing 14.6 minutes per game across 31 appearances. Smith started Saturday in place of center Kalib Boone, the latter of whom started in each of the Cowboys' previous 30 contests. With Oklahoma State now scheduled to play Oklahoma during the opening round of the Big 12 Conference Tournament on Wednesday, it will be worth monitoring which of these two big men is listed in Oklahoma State's starting five ahead of this matchup.

23 minutes in start
Smith closed Saturday's 56-46 loss to Texas with zero points (0-2 FG), two rebounds, three blocks and one steal across 23 minutes.
Impact
Smith was tapped for his first start of the season with center Moussa Cisse sidelined after going down with an ankle injury Monday versus West Virginia. However, Smith did not see any significant increase in usage, as fellow forward Kalib Boone (16-10-1-6-1) appeared to step into the Cowboys' starting center role. Smith did post a season high in blocks versus the Longhorns, though he's now attempted just two field goals across the past two contests. It's likely Smith will continue to play a limited offensive role even if Cisse remains out Tuesday versus Kansas State.
