The Sidelines: Josh Pastner discusses following Calipari at Memphis + life at Georgia Tech

We’re coming down the home-stretch of the college basketball season and one of the most pleasant surprises is Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets’ head coach Josh Pastner joined “The Sidelines Podcast” with FS1 college basketball insider Evan Daniels to break down their season.

The interview features a wide-ranging discussion, including:

  • Pastner’s unique background in basketball. How he began his own scouting service at 13 and parlayed it into contacts across the industry (like Coach K above) as well as a walk-on spot at Arizona. Also, how he helped develop future NBA stars like Jason Terry, Richard Jefferson and Mike Bibby while enrolled in Tucson.
  • His role as an assistant coach under John Calipari at Memphis. Pastner shares several vivid examples to help explain why Calipari has become one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history.
  • The pressure that came with following Calipari as Memphis’ head coach. How the job began to eat away at Pastner, to the point that he wouldn’t even leave his house after losses.
  • Life at Georgia Tech. What led him to take the job? And what has led to the team’s surprising success this season.

Pastner is just the latest guest on “The Sidelines Podcast,” but some of college basketball’s biggest names have recently joined the show, including North Carolina’s Roy Williams, Kansas’ Bill Self and Duke Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski. To catch up on all episodes click here.
