Last Night in College Basketball: Upset After Upset, Feat. Michigan State, Twice

Jeremy Fears Jr. - Double-double in loss Fears chipped in 10 points (4-11 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two rebounds, 11 assists and two steals in 32 minutes during Wednesday's 76-73 loss to Minnesota.

Impact Fears' passing has been on another level as of late. He's averaging 8.9 assists on the season, and 11.0 over his last four games. The sophomore point guard has also been a scoring machine since the calendar flipped to 2026; he's averaging 18.7 points in that span. His 10 points against the Gophers were his lowest output since Dec. 20. The Spartans still suffered the upset loss against Minnesota, and Fears' quieter scoring night certainly contributed, but he's been on a tear as of late and remains an attractive fantasy option.

Coen Carr - Leading scorer in loss Carr had 16 points (5-11 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 6-7 FT), six rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes during Wednesday's 76-73 loss to Minnesota.

Impact Carr's 16 points were his most since Jan. 5 in a win over USC, and he's now notched double-digit points in five straight games. He appears to be the lone Spartan catching fire over this rough stretch that's seen Michigan State drop two straight games. With the Spartans slumping, Carr will need to continue to shoulder a big load as they look to stay in the Big Ten title race down the stretch.

Cam Ward - Offers five points off bench Ward supplied five points (2-2 FG, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal over 18 minutes during Wednesday's 76-73 loss to Minnesota.

Impact Ward was solid in his 18 minutes, but didn't impact the game a whole lot and certainly didn't do enough to help the Spartans avoid an upset at the hands of a feisty Minnesota squad. Ward has been a minor bench player for head coach Tom Izzo in his freshman season, averaging 5.0 points and 4.4 rebounds, so this performance was about status quo for the forward. Fantasy-wise, he's not bringing much to the table at this point.

Carson Cooper - Held scoreless by Gophers Cooper posted zero points (0-3 FG), five rebounds and one assist in 20 minutes during Wednesday's 76-73 loss to Minnesota.

Impact Cooper was blanked on the scoreboard for the first time this season, and he didn't exactly make up for it in other facets of the game, as he was held to five rebounds in a shocking upset loss. The senior big man has quieted down in his last two games, and now that Michigan State has some ground to make up in the Big Ten title race, this isn't the time for a slump. He'll look to bounce back in a tough matchup Saturday against Illinois.

Jaxon Kohler - Cold from distance in loss Kohler racked up nine points (4-9 FG, 1-5 3Pt), nine rebounds and one assist across 26 minutes during Wednesday's 76-73 loss to Minnesota.

Impact Kohler has been one of Michigan State's best three-point shooters, but he's hit a rough patch the last three games, hitting just 22.2 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. He went 1-of-5 in the stunning loss to Minnesota, and his nine points represented just the third time all season he's been held to single digit points. Kohler, like the rest of the Spartans team, appears to be slumping at a brutal time.

Divine Ugochukwu - Suffers foot injury Ugochukwu (foot) suffered a foot injury during Michigan State's 76-73 loss to Minnesota on Wednesday, per Chris Solari of The Detroit Free Press.

Impact Ugochukwu played a total of just eeight minutes against the Golden Gophers before going down in the first half. The 6-foot-3 sophomore was seen wearing a walking boot after the game and reportedly has X-rays planned when the team returns to East Lansing. Ugochukwu has averaged 5.1 points in 16.1 minutes per game during his first season with the Spartans. The details and severity of the issue are thus far unknown, but his next chance to return will come against Illinois on Saturday.
