He moved into the starting lineup for this one but saw less minutes (15), albeit still more than Teng (6). The 2-0 Spartans will look to continue to establish a backcourt identity but only have one matchup on the schedule this week, Thursday against San Jose State.

The 6-foot-9 freshman saw his minutes ramp up to 23 versus the Razorbacks, and he also finished with a double-double of 10 rebounds. While the young forward likely won't get positioned into the starting lineup this early in the season, he looks to be positioned as a main rotator and contributor in the games to come.

Impact Fears only had one double-digit assist game in 2024-2025. He just did it in the Spartans' opener. The point guard will look to improve on his efficiency, as 14 points on 10 shots and 40 percent from the field can certainly be better, but he had his fingerprints all over the game. The competition will get tougher, but Fears could be one of the better facilitators in the Big Ten.

Impact Kohler only scored double-digit points 10 times last season, but that looks like its about to change as the senior got off to an excellent start to his 2025-2026 campaign. Playing 31 minutes in a game that was a little close for comfort in East Lansing, Kohler dominated the glass with 15 boards and hit 50 percent of his shots from the field while nearly getting to the free throw line 10 times. He looks primed to explode this season.

Kur Teng - Surprise exhibition starter Teng has started both of Michigan State's exhibition contests so far, posting nine total points on 3-for-14 shooting in 36 total minutes.

Impact Teng was a four-star recruit that came in at No. 55 in the 2024 ESPN 100 rankings, but he was sparsely used in his first season with the Spartans, averaging only 3.0 mpg across 19 total appearances and logging just four minutes total in the team's final 12 games. Normally that results in a transfer in this day and age, but Teng stuck it out, and now it appears he has a legitimate chance to start. It's also perhaps possible he's simply getting the first opportunity simply as the incumbent option, as transfers Trey Fort (14.6 ppg at Samford) and Divine Ugochukwu (5.3 ppg at Miami-FL) are expected to fiercely compete for the same role.

Impact Many thought Fort would be a candidate to earn a starting backcourt spot after averaging 14.6 ppg last year at Samford, but at least in exhibition play, that hasn't been the case. Sophomore Kur Teng has started both exhibition games after averaging only 3.0 mpg a season ago, but he hasn't exactly lit it up offensively in his opportunities. Fort will likely be one of the better scoring options for the Spartans in any case, even if it's in a reserve capacity.
