INDYCAR Officiating Statement Following the Streets of Long Beach Race
During the Lap 61 restart of today’s INDYCAR SERIES race on the Streets of Long Beach, INDYCAR Officiating discovered a Push to Pass software failure, which led to a post-race review.
The failure left the Push to Pass system available to all drivers on the restart, when it should’ve been disabled prior to passing the alternate start-finish line on Lap 62. The Push to Pass system is governed by:
- Rule 14.19.16. Race Starts and any Race Restart that occurs before the lap prior to the white flag or prior to three minutes remaining in a timed Race Event will have the Push to Pass system disabled and will be enabled for a given Car once that Car reaches the alternate Start/Finish line.
The burden of the rule rests with INDYCAR to assure that the software runs properly.
In the review, INDYCAR Officiating learned that 12 cars utilized the system prior to the alternate start-finish line. INDYCAR Officiating does not view this as a team or driver infraction.
Further analysis of post-race data showed that no cars received a position change as a result of the software error with the exception of car No. 66 passing car No. 14. Although this pass did occur, both cars utilized the Push to Pass system in nearly equal amounts on the lap. Based on this analysis, INDYCAR Officiating will not make any changes to the official results.
INDYCAR and INDYCAR Officiating will continue to evaluate the system failure and will implement additional protective measures to keep it from happening again at future events.
