Rutgers dominates Penn State in Big Ten tourney opener
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Osh Brown had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Shug Dickson had 14 points, seven rebounds and a career-high nine assists, and No. 13 seed Rutgers beat 12th-seeded Penn State 75-50 on Wednesday in the opener of the Big Ten Conference tournament.
Rutgers (11-19) plays No. 5 seed Indiana on Thursday after its largest winning margin in a Big Ten tournament game, topping 15 in 2019.
Rutgers held the Big Ten’s second-leading scorer, Makenna Marisa, to just 15 points after entering averaging 22.5. She was 5 for 19 from the field, missing three 3-pointers. Penn State made just five second-half field goals.
Tyia Singleton added 10 points and seven rebounds for Rutgers, which outrebounded Penn State 54-32. Brown recorded her 11th double-double of the season, and 60th in her career, early in the third quarter with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Victoria Morris scored seven points, reaching 1,500 for her career.
Leilani Kapinus had 16 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season for Penn State (11-18). The Lady Lions finished 14-of-59 shooting (23.7%).
Penn State was shooting 22% from the field (9 of 42) with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Lady Lions made their first field goal of the second half on Marisa's basket with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter, snapping a string of 11 misses.
Rutgers entered allowing 60.1 points per contest, leading the Big Ten.
