News: Mercer is batting .341 in Grapefruit League action after going 3-for-4 against Atlanta on Thursday.
Impact: He has distanced himself from newcomer Jung-Ho Kang in the competition for Pittsburgh's starting shortstop spot. Mercer will be looking to put together a complete season after struggling the first two months of 2014. He holds a .314/.349/.455 slash line in 129 career plate appearances against left-handed pitching.

News: Mercer, who homered off the Phillies' Cole Hamels Wednesday, said he believes the addition of Jung-Ho Kang will make the Bucs a better team. "I think all of us feel like this is one of the better benches we are going to have," Mercer told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "To be able to plug in a guy like (Kang) anywhere on the diamond ... it's going to be huge."
Impact: Although he enters 2015 as the clear starter at shortstop, he'll have to watch his back with Kang around. Should Mercer struggle to open the season again -- he hit .190 for the first two months of 2014 -- he could find himself losing playing time to the Korean.
