- Alabama is certain to be No 1 again in the first regular-season college football poll by the AP. The big question: How far will Florida State fall? Poll released 2 p.m.

- NEW YORK - Venus Williams faces Petra Kvitova in the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Sam Querrey tries to become the first American man to reach the Open semifinals in more than a decade.

- SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras - The U.S. plays Honduras on a hot and humid afternoon, hoping to get back on track after losing a World Cup qualifier at home to Costa Rica. Game starts 5:36 p.m.

- LOS ANGELES - The Diamondbacks go for their 12th straight win. Zack Greinke (16-6) starts against the Dodgers, his former team. Los Angeles has lost nine of 10. Game starts 10 p.m.

- CHICAGO - The Cleveland Indians, leading the AL Central, look for their 13th straight victory. They play a White Sox team with the worst record in the AL. Game starts 8:10 p.m.

- SEATTLE - Justin Verlander makes his Houston debut, facing the Mariners. Verlander was acquired by the first-place Astros just before the trade deadline. Game starts 10:10 p.m.

- SHERMAN, Texas - Ezekiel Elliott tries to keep the NFL from suspending the Cowboys star. The hearing could hinge on a possible ruling on Elliott's appeal of his six-game ban. Hearing at 6 p.m.

- FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - With Julian Edelman out for the season with a knee injury, the Patriots picked up Phillip Dorsett, a receiver who's not big but can make the big play.

- ASHBURN, Va. - Coming off a season in which he was the NFL's most penalized player, Josh Norman can't wait to begin now that Washington is using a different scheme on defense.

- NEW YORK - The AP hands out its WNBA awards and releases its final power poll of the season.

- RIO DE JANEIRO - The home of Brazil's Olympic chief is searched by police. Carlos Nuzman will also be forced testify in a bribery investigation regarding the Rio Games.

- Argentina tries to revive its World Cup hopes in a South American qualifier at Venezuela. Colombia looks to do the same against already-qualified Brazil.

- TEHRAN - Syria, ravaged by war and forced to play all its qualifiers away from homes, faces Iran. Syria can reach its first World Cup with a victory, and help elsewhere.

- KYOTO, Japan - Usain Bolt is confident his record times will remain for 15 to 20 years. The Jamaican sprint great says he retired because he had ''nothing to prove.''
