Young Brewers Tracker: Phillips flashes power, Hader debuts at Triple-A

The Milwaukee Brewers are reshaping their franchise with an injection of youth and prospects.

Every Thursday for the rest of the season, FOX Sports Wisconsin will take a closer look at some specific young players -- as well as noting others who might be stepping up -- measuring, highlighting and evaluating their progress. Keon Broxton (age 25)

Notable: Davies' only start last week came at Miller Park, where he has flourished this season. Thus far, Davies has eight starts at home, going 4-2 with a 2.88 ERA, 0.960 WHIP and 7.9 K/9. In three starts on the road he is 1-1 with a 7.82 ERA, 2.053 WHIP and 4.3 K.9.

 

Ramon Flores (age 23)

Notable: Batting .265 in June but with just a .294 slugging percentage.

 

Domingo Santana (age 23)

Notable: Went back on the disabled list June 9 due to right elbow soreness.

Notable: Batting 343/395/471 at home games in Colorado Springs but just 245/276/345 on the road.

 

Notable: Had a couple of nice games: June 10 at Kane County he was 2 for 5 with 3 runs and 2 RBI and on June 14, Clark went 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBI.

 

Clint Coulter (age 22/Single-A)

Last week: 7 games, 23 AB, 7 H, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K, .304 BA.

Season: 43 games, 159 AB, .220 BA, .287 OBP, .321 SLG, .607 OPS, 5 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 13 R, 16 RBI, 1 SB, 11 BB, 37 K.

Notable: Had three two-hit games last week.

 

Isan Diaz (age 19/Single-A)

Season (combined Double-A & Triple-A): 12 games (12 starts), 2-2, 1.14 ERA, 63 IP, 0.98 WHIP, 39 H, 1 HR, 23 BB, 82 K, .184 OBA.

Notable: In his first start in Triple-A, Hader had season-highs of four walks and nine strikeouts.

 

Adrian Houser (age 23/Double-A)

Last week: 1 game (1 start), 1-0, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 0.00 ERA.

Season: 11 games (11 starts), 3-5, 5.37 ERA, 60 1/3 IP, 1.38 WHIP, 65 H, 4 HR, 18 BB, 48 K, .277 OBA.

Notable: In last two starts has thrown 97 and 96 pitches, allowing just two runs (one earned) in 13 innings on 11 hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts.

 

Jorge Lopez (age 23/Triple-A)

Notable: Ran hit streak to eight games before it ended. Did have three two-hit games last week, although hitless in last two.

 

Brett Phillips (Age 21/Double-A)

Notable: Had a pair of two-hit games, including June 15 when he also hit a three-run home run.

 

Michael Reed (age 23/Triple-A)

Season: 52 games, 169 AB, .225 BA, .371 OBP, .325 SLG, .697 OPS, 9 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 28 R, 17 RBI, 10 SB, 37 BB, 48 K.

Notable: Was 1 for 17 before going 2 for 3 with a double on June 14.

 

Yadiel Rivera (age 24/Triple-A)

Last week: 6 games, 20 AB, 4 H, 1 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 6 K, .200 BA

Season: 28 games, 109 AB, .248 BA, .303 OBP, .339 SLG, .642 OPS, 4 2B, 3 3B, 0 HR, 13 R, 12 RBI, 3 SB, 6 BB, 26 K

Notable: Went 2 for 3 on June 15, his first multiple-hit game since June 1.

 

Others: Catcher movement: Manny Pina was placed on the DL at Colorado Springs. Rene Garcia was promoted to replace him and Parker Berberet was added to Biloxi. . . . Colorado Springs 3B Will Middlebrooks is batting .382 with four home runs over his last 10 games. . . . Rule 5 pick Zack Jones made three rehab assignments at Brevard Country and pitched June 14 for Colorado Springs. In the latter, he walked two and allowed two hits without getting an out. . . . Biloxi 3B Garrett Cooper is batting .324 with two homers over his last 10 games. . . .  Biloxi RHP Daniel Tillman has allowed one run in 18 2/3 IP with 23 K. . . . OF Johnny Davis was promoted to Biloxi. He is batting .320 in six games. . . .  Brevard County RHP Kodi Medeiros was activated from the DL on June 13.

A glossary of some of the advanced statistics used:

OPS: On base percentage + slugging percentage

OPS+: OPS compared to league average of 100, adjusted to the player's ballpark

sOPS+: OPS for the split (in our case the last 7 days) compared to the league's split OPS (100 being average).

BAbip: Batting average on balls in play.

WHIP: Walks plus hits divided by innings pitched.

ERA+: ERA compared to league average of 100, adjusted to the player's ballpark

FIP: Fielding Independent Pitching. Measures a pitcher's effectiveness at presenting home runs, walks and hit by pitches while causing strikeouts. The MLB average FIP is the same as the MLB average ERA.

WAR: Wins Above Replacement value. Represents the number of wins the player added to the team above what a replacement player would add (we are using WAR from baseball-reference.com).
