Released by Royals
The Royals released Davies on Tuesday.
Impact
It's not clear whether his release was the Royals' decision or whether Davies exercised an opt-out clause. Davies signed a minor-league contract with the Royals in early April and made five starts with Triple-A Omaha, collecting a 4.29 ERA and 12:9 K:BB over 21 innings. The veteran right-hander posted a 7.00 ERA in 18 starts in 2023 with the Diamondbacks.

Released by Nationals
Davies was released by the Nationals on Friday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Davies was informed he wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster and presumably then triggered the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract. He should be able to latch on with another club in search of rotation depth.

Designated for assignment
Davies was designated for assignment Wednesday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
The move comes one day after Davies yielded four runs over just three innings in Arizona's win over the White Sox. He didn't go more than four frames in any of his last four outings and heads to the waiver wire having posted a 7.00 ERA over 18 starts this season. Ryne Nelson pitched well in relief of Davies on Tuesday and could now take his spot in the rotation Sunday.

Roughed up by ChiSox
Davies did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over three innings against the White Sox. He struck out three.
Impact
Despite being 10 days removed from his last start due to a postponement, Davies failed to go deeper than three frames Tuesday. He was immediately tagged by Eloy Jimenez for a three-run homer in the first inning, then was hit again by Jimenez in the second inning on an RBI single. Davies has now lasted four or fewer innings in four consecutive outings, a stretch in which he's surrendered at least three runs in every start. The veteran is lined up to make one more start this season, which is expected to come Sunday against the Astros.

Another four-inning start
Davies allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over four innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Saturday.
Impact
Davies has labored over his last three starts, allowing 11 runs across 11 innings, going no more than four innings in each of those appearances. The 30-year-old right-hander is now at a 6.81 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 69:38 K:BB through 79.1 innings across 17 starts this season. He's projected for a road start versus the Yankees next weekend.

Lasts four innings vs. Mets
Davies did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks over four innings against the Mets. He struck out five.
Impact
Davies held the Mets off the board through his first three innings before surrendering three runs in the fourth on a Jeff McNeil homer and a Ronny Mauricio two-run double. The 30-year-old Davies has now given up eight runs in his last two outings (seven innings). Overall, he's 2-5 with a 6.81 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 64:36 K:BB through 16 starts (75.1 innings) this season. Davies is currently lined up for a home matchup with the Cubs in his next outing.

Tagged for five run in no-decision
Davies did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over three innings against Colorado. He struck out two.
Impact
It was a rough outing for Davies, who had allowed just two runs over his previous two starts (11 innings). The Rockies got to him early Wednesday, scoring four times in the first inning after the first four batters reached safely. Overall, Davies is 2-5 with an unsightly 6.81 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 59:33 K:BB across 15 starts (71.1 innings) this season. He'll look to get on track in his next start, currently scheduled for early next week against the Mets.

Tames Orioles
Davies (2-5) allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings to earn the win Friday over the Orioles.
Impact
Davies has allowed a combined two runs over 11 innings since returning from a back injury. His win Friday was his first since June 7. The right-hander finally appears to be in his best form after an injury-plagued season that has seen him record a 6.45 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 57:30 K:BB over 68.1 innings across 14 starts. He's tentatively lined up for a home start versus the Rockies next week.

Goes five innings in no-decision
Davies (back) allowed a run on five hits and two walks while striking out five over five-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Reds on Saturday.
Impact
Davies was solid in his return from lower-back inflammation, with his lone mistake being a solo home run by Matt McLain in the sixth inning. Davies threw 86 pitches (54 strikes) in the start, his sharpest since he posted seven shutout innings against the Rays on June 28. The veteran right-hander has had more downs than ups in 2023, pitching to a 6.93 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 51:29 K:BB through 62.1 innings over 13 starts. He's projected for a tough home start versus Baltimore next week.

Reinstated from injured list
The Diamondbacks reinstated Davies (back) from the 15-day injured list Saturday.
Impact
Davies will return from the IL to start Saturday against the Reds. The 30-year-old righty hasn't found much success this season, accumulating a 7.38 ERA and 1.62 WHIP through 57.1 innings and also surrendering 13 runs over 13.1 frames during his rehab assignment. Justin Martinez was optioned to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.

Set to return Saturday
Davies (back) is scheduled to return to the Diamondbacks' rotation Saturday at home against the Reds, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
Davies got the go-ahead Tuesday after throwing 87 pitches over six innings in his third and final minor-league rehab outing Sunday with Triple-A Reno. The 30-year-old right-hander has been on the injured list since July 19 due to lower-back inflammation. He's posted a rough 7.38 ERA and 1.62 WHIP across 12 major-league starts this season.

ROTOWIRE
Throws another rehab start
Davies (back) allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two over six innings for Triple-A Reno on Sunday.
Impact
Davies had been expected to start for the Diamondbacks on Sunday, but Hurricane Hilary forced the game to moved up to Saturday as part of a doubleheader. Instead, Davies made a third rehab start, getting up to 87 pitches, and should be ready to go this weekend against the Reds. In his three turns for the Aces, Davies allowed 13 runs on 22 hits and seven walks while striking out six over 13.1 innings.

ROTOWIRE
Will make another rehab start
Davies (back) make a third rehab start for Triple-A Reno on Sunday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
Davies is on schedule to pitch Sunday and was Arizona's likely starter in San Diego, but that game was moved up to Saturday as part of a doubleheader due to the impending hurricane due to hit Southern California on Sunday. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Davies will not start Saturday, so the right-hander will instead make another rehab start for the Aces.

ROTOWIRE
Sunday start possible
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Davies (back) is ready to return from the injured list and start Sunday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
The caveat to Davies pitching Sunday in San Diego is the weather. Hurricane Hilary is gaining strength off the coast of Mexico and it expected to bring heavy rains to Southern California on Sunday. The manager added that he wants Davies to throw Sunday and suggested it could be another rehab start in the minors if the game is rained out. "I want him to throw the ball on Sunday," Lovullo said. "There's a chance it could be here and there's a chance it might not be here." Davies was not sharp in his most rehab outing with Triple-A Reno, giving up seven runs over three innings.

ROTOWIRE
Return uncertain
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo would not commit to activating Davies (back) for a start Sunday, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
Davies had a second rehab start Tuesday, throwing 80 pitches, which lines perfectly for a Sunday return, but the manager isn't ready to make that decision. "We're just gonna evaluate him day to day," Lovullo said. "He's gonna rejoin us at some point. When that happens, we're not sure." Perhaps the results of Tuesday's start linger with the manager. The right-hander allowed seven runs on 11 hits with just two strikeouts in three innings. Lovullo was encouraged that Davies pitched with more of a gameplan following a five-run first inning, then added he wants to make sure Davies is feeling good following the outing.

ROTOWIRE
Makes second rehab start
Davies (back) allowed seven runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out two over three innings for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.
Impact
Davies made his second rehab start in advance of what could be an activation this weekend. The organization seemed intent on having the right-hander up his pitch count regardless of the results. He threw 80 pitches and appears to be stretched out enough to rejoin the club and start Sunday, if the Diamondbacks choose to keep in the rotation. Davies has a 7.38 ERA over 12 starts.

ROTOWIRE
Rehab start coming Tuesday
Davies (back) will make a rehab start for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Davies will be making his second rehab start after throwing 4.1 innings last Thursday for the Aces. It looks like the Diamondbacks may get creative with the rotation until Davies is ready to return. The club cut the cord on rookie right-hander Ryne Nelson, who was optioned back to Reno as part of a roster shakeup Sunday. That essentially leaves them with three starters -- Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly (leg) and Brandon Pfaadt. "Ryne did a good job in some of his games," Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said. "It just was wildly inconsistent for us. We ended up using a lot of bullpen in those days, anyway. The decision was, if we're using a lot of bullpen in those days, anyway, looking at it just as a traditional starter situation wasn't the right way we should be looking at it." Bryce Jarvis, a starter throughout his career, was called up Sunday and will pitch out of the bullpen. Slade Cecconi is up with the team and made one start and one relief appearance. Arizona also has Tyler Gilbert for multiple innings.
