Carl Edwards and crew chief Jimmy Fennig stuck to their game plan of only two pit stops, and their reward was a victory that few expected in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

Edwards, who had never before conquered a road course, survived an eventful race that featured multiple spins and left more than one driver perturbed about an opportunity missed in the scenic Sonoma Wine Country.

Among the obstacles that Edwards and his No. 99 team faced were a questionable pit strategy, the potential for a black flag that never came, and a fast-charging Jeff Gordon who fell just short of catching Edwards on the final lap.
